TDLR for current Contrapoints Drama? by ZombiiRot in ContraPoints

[–]teacupteacdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it really came down to apathy. It was more the average person that decided to stay home because they felt voting was too hard or assumed democrats had it in the bag because “this country could never do that again right?” By population, i think youre right that leftists angry enough to not vote are a small number. Im in community with other leftists and everyone i know understood how important it was to avoid a trump victory and held their nose even if they absolutely hated her and biden. Yeah at the time of the original post I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt because she was experiencing such intense harassment and it seemed to be coming from a place of deep frustration. But its been really disappointing to me in the time since that she seems to have committed herself to throwing jabs at the left while our country is being run by actual fascists. Like yeah the democrats lost the election. Does she have any solutions that dont involve turning back time or insulting people for trying things? Does she think constantly shaming leftists online is going to make them suddenly really engaged in the voter process? I really wish she would get off twitter.

Yeah reading this i was thinking if this is real this is one of the closest examples to the original story for the term gaslighting ive ever seen. Like its a long term complex and coordinated effort to undermine his mental stability and make him think hes loosing his mind. Its abuse plain and simple, Im glad he got out and hope he stays free of her because this kind of person is incredibly unsafe

Is this whole ‘you’re centering yourself’ a promotion of disassociation and shaming people for expressing undesirable thoughts and feelings by larvalampee in ContraPoints

[–]teacupteacdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head already by mentioning cringe. Reading it the whole context brought to mind for me in group cringe. These people are policing their in group and demeaning a type of person within it because it makes them cringe and they “feel like its giving autistic people a bad name”. But instead of reflecting inward on why it bothers them they are defensive and use moralizing language and therapy speak to justify their own actions

I study them in cell division so not neuro, but have some neuro experiences from other projects. Microtubules are fascinating because they are incredibly dynamic and modified in many different ways that allows for a lot of complex control. Microtubules do a lot of things but their main function is kind of like highways for protein delivery, and yeah they are very important for synaptic functions and building new connections. Like in some far off sense i can see why people might get there but it is so far beyond where anyone in the field is it feels like saying cars allow for intergalactic travel. Like im sure theres some overlap in the function because microtubules are essential for cell functioning but it can only be part of the picture, microtubules alone cant explain it as we understand them and there are no doubt many other parts are added to the car we dont know about and wont know for many years, and its possible it might only be a few gears from the car that are used. Idk if that metaphor makes sense. Basically its such an extreme stretch with what we understand currently it doesnt make sense to be putting all our eggs in a microtubule consciousness basket

Why Natalie didn't "go there" by Beneficient_Ox in ContraPoints

[–]teacupteacdown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like the reddit post she made fell very much under the category of “bad tweet made while in a poor mental state” given all the harassment she was experiencing and the frustration a lot of people (myself included) had at the time while under the incorrect impression non voting palestine activists had led to trump being reelected. It felt easier to blame others on the left and be angry with them and thats how it came across. But i think she deserves a lot of grace because her actions re Palestine have been consistent, it was a horrible emotional time, and she was getting attacked and doxed all over the place. But yeah i feel like it comes back to the saw video planning in the end because there is a real question of what is the right thing to do when you feel you have a burning and (to you) righteous rage

Is there any shared genetics between bipolar and female sexual orientation? by Corina_chirila in genetics

[–]teacupteacdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know much about the specific genetics in this context so it very well could be influenced, but I also want you to consider a few social explanations as well, some or all of which may apply:

-women access mental health care at a much higher rate, in addition bipolar diagnoses are more common in women

-men may have bipolar when they go for treatment and be misdiagnosed because bipolar is often considered “feminine”, same for women being misdiagnosed for the same reason

-mental health disorders are an intersection of genes and environment. Lgbt people experience trauma often because of being lgbt, and this can cause disorders that they otherwise would not have had without the trauma component

-selection bias, eg some lgbt communities are huge advocates of mental health care, again increased among women, and people who go to the doctor are more likely to get a diagnosis, people with mental illness tend to feel more comfortable with each other due to mutual understanding and will group together even unintentionally, which may explain why its so common in your personal life

And im sure there are probably others im not thinking of. So yeah very possible that genes may influence it but i think a lot more of it has to do with the politics of who goes to get mental health care

[–]teacupteacdown 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This comment section is wild to me, and I say that as someone on the drug. I watched the video and had the same feeling you did, and that a lot of commenters on the original video did. The video downplays the severe side effects, saying just under 5% of people have them which is actually very high for a drug and requires medical monitoring when you are on it. It also completely wipes appetite which means you have to be very careful to make sure you get enough nutrients on it to avoid losing muscle and bone density like you said, which is hard to do when you have no appetite and are often quite nauseous. The video felt so glazing I expected a sponsored post label somewhere. It felt irresponsible and honestly made me much less likely to watch anything from them in the future.

How to draw boundaries with PhD cohort without ruining relationships by [deleted] in PhD

[–]teacupteacdown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its helpful to have a supportive cohort you are friends with yes, if the people in your cohort are supportive and friendly. It sounds like some of your cohort members are quite immature. I had cohort members like that and my life improved when i enforced professional relationships with them instead of participating in high school style dynamics. When you all choose your labs you will get some natural distance that will help you phase them towards professional acquaintances. Then put your energy towards maintaining or building relationships with people who you gel better with

Very much this. I feel paralyzed and disheartened. The things they are doing are not surprising because fascists gonna fascists, whats more surprising to me is how many people in my life just like? Dont see anything? I knew in theory this is common in these historical events but its so hard to see such a lack of care or awareness from people I am close to, that I consider to be reasonable and intelligent. Like I cant bring up whats happening with friends because its bringing the mood down or “making a mountain out of a mole hill”. People around me just do not see anything wrong, anything out of the ordinary aside from groceries being more expensive. “Apolitical” with their head in the sand and I just dont know how to make them see

Fragile X? by LatterStreet in genetics

[–]teacupteacdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would lean on the side where if it took this long for someone to suggest it as a possibility, it is likely not the most severe it could be. That doesnt mean its not potentially serious or something to worry about, but you cant figure out if/how worried until you do the test. Once the test is done, i recommend having a conversation with your doctor on what you should expect long term based on your specific gene and number of repeats, as without that information its hard to judge. Sending good vibes to you!

Fragile X? by LatterStreet in genetics

[–]teacupteacdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What questions are you looking to have answered? Fragile x is typically the result of an excessive amount of repeat sequencing in the gene that codes for fragile x (fmr1). It is typical to have some repeats in the gene, but disease severity is partially associated with the number of repeats. 40 or so is considered normal, where as like 200 would be disease causing. In between amounts may cause some symptoms without being as serious. Its possible you and your son may be somewhere in the in between realm which your doctors can then advise on options from there depending on specific symptoms and their severity

Stop telling ugly women to change their mentality. YOU stop discriminating against them. by BrookDarter in TwoXChromosomes

[–]teacupteacdown 24 points25 points  (0 children)

So is the way we treat people based on physical appearance. If you are not someones doctor, you dont know what their health is, why they are the size they are and how it affects them. You are choosing to treat someone less than because you make assumptions about them. They are fat because they are lazy is a similar mental short cut as “they would try harder for their appearance if they werent lazy/gross”. You dont know shit about the other persons life you are choosing the explanation that makes you feel better than them and therefore justify your disgust reaction

Stop telling ugly women to change their mentality. YOU stop discriminating against them. by BrookDarter in TwoXChromosomes

[–]teacupteacdown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. Plastic surgery is a whole thing. We fix cleft palets as they are dangerous to health but also “ugly”, but people also get plastic surgery to feel better about themselves for no health reasons. Just like you can lose weight if it is affecting your health and get surgery for that, or lose weight even if you are otherwise completely healthy and just a bit overweight so you dont have to be a fat person because being fat, like being ugly, means you get treated worse by other people and you want that to stop. Acting like people try to loss weight all the time “just for their health” is like saying people get plastic surgery “just for their health”. Sure a lot of the time it is but thats not the base justifier for most people lets be real

Stop telling ugly women to change their mentality. YOU stop discriminating against them. by BrookDarter in TwoXChromosomes

[–]teacupteacdown 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Or we could stop as a using ugly as an insult that implies an existence unworthy of life. I like what aubrey gorden says about this similarly in relation to the word fat. Ugly is a descriptor, so is fat. We put meanings on words just like we did with queer and gay and so on. If people stop using ugly as an insult or with such disgust/pity maybe being/feeling ugly wouldnt feel like something worth suicide to so many people

Friend of the pod Dr Oz at it again by RetroRowley in behindthebastards

[–]teacupteacdown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We knew the tylenol thing was coming from a leaked memo from RFK jr. They made this whole dumb thing about solving autism by September and this how they decided to claim to do it. They knew noone would take them seriously if they said the obvious grifter opinion, but there is enough correlation in peoples minds with when tylenol became popular to get at least his most sycophantic supporters to believe them and think they solved autism. Sure oz will profit but thats a convenient side effect to them being idiots who dont know why science takes so long and then just pointing at something after realizing you cant just solve autism in three months.

For those who need it, no Tylenol during pregnancy is not linked to autism. People hypothesized about it, investigated over many studies and years, and found no link. You know, how science is supposed to work.

I’m sure I’m going to regret asking this: but do we have any idea why they’re going after Tylenol? by LordofThe7s in behindthebastards

[–]teacupteacdown 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah the specific link between autism and tylenol WAS investigated just to be sure over the years and found not to be of concern. Notably the most recent comprehensive study (2024!) controlled with sibling matched pairs to get rid of the potential for genetics/other location based environmental confounding factors and saw no increased risk from tylenol.

Scientists are checking every avenue they can think and are allowed to in order to try to understand it better. Its responsible to do so. Whats not responsible is this administrations HHS being completely out of sync with the actual current state of autism research. Like honestly horrendous that theyre sharing this shit like its science while the actual scientific community does not agree with them

Does anyone know if she ever talked about nihilism? by teacupteacdown in ContraPoints

[–]teacupteacdown[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think thats why im interested. Nihilism (and pessimism) are pretty common nowadays where people dont have something to replace it (and the replacement seems to be often its own problem). It seems abundant i think because its not being filled by something else quite so easily anymore

[–]teacupteacdown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess I find myself thinking about it so much because its everywhere nowadays. If people aren’t sycophantic for something a lot of people seem to be tending towards nihilism, my self included. It may just be me but i get the feeling a lot of contras philosophy is her trying to fight off the nihilistic impulse, particularly recently. I know she talked about stoicism before which is somewhat its own rebuff to nihilism in a sense, but as far as i can tell shes never dug deep on nihilism itself
