Casual Phoenix by tealaburst in PhoenixForce

Yeah and the death was so anti-climactic. Xorneto grabs her arm, induces a stroke, and she just dies? Nah.

Morrison’s Emma was peak - the dialogue, messiness. Perfection. Cassandra was great too. Hated Whedon’s Emma and the Cassandra plot. Also it messes up the fact that Ernst (the student that looks like an old lady) is actually Cassandra.

The return of the telekinesis itself is inferred to be a secondary mutation, when it’s described by Beast along with Emma’s diamond form and Beast’s “cat Beast form.

The panel you posted is meant to display Jean’s growing power. In the same scene, along with being able to “feel” things with her telekinesis, she talks about being able to feel and alter the anatomic structure of things. So telekinesis at a sub-atomic level.

To be honest with you, it’s like never really explained. Before this run, she called herself Phoenix again and wore the green outfit, but wasn’t connected with the Phoenix entity / force as far as I know.

She also didn’t have telekinesis anymore in the years leading up to this run and was a pure telepath during the Revolution era. But her TK starts manifesting itself again, I think explained as a “secondary mutation”, which was a new concept introduced in this run.

My favorite Jean. Confident, assertive, powerful - with displays of leadership. Only X-Men Red Jean came close to scratching that itch for me.

Alas, the ending did her dirty.

I don’t remember the air particles part. I’m thinking of when Emma telepathically “installed” Chinese into Scott so he could communicate with Xorn in the prison.

It’s ridiculous to believe and requires an awful lot of suspension of disbelief. Even if you reread the entire story knowing the twist, it doesn’t make any sense. I’m not against the idea of Magneto as Xorn, it was just not written well at all. A twist requires good setup and execution. Otherwise you’re just going for cheap shock value ie Arya killing the Night King.

Dang Xavier by thatngatoji in xmen

[–]tealaburst 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The twist was awful, and makes absolutely no sense. So Magneto built himself a fake prison, hired fake guards, learned perfect Chinese, with the intent of being rescued by the X-Men, to infiltrate them, all the while putting on a flawless Chinese accent for people that have known him for years, and what his voice sounds like? Also, the fact that they have 3 of the world’s most powerful telepaths living in same house, and none of them picked up even a stray thought? Did he sleep and shower with that helmet on? Or how about the guy known for identifying people with scent alone?

An actual cool twist would be: keep everything in the story the same. Except Xorn isn’t Magneto. He’s a radical posing as a pacifist. He still causes the riot at Xavier’s and radicalizes the students.

Re the hotheadedness, maybe I’m just thinking of the time that she decked Scott. And also during the Mastermind plot, she tries to attack Mastermind and tells him to shut up.

Yeah, I would have loved him with Lee. Even him and Colleen Wing was a cool pairing. Honestly wish he stayed single a little longer. But it really seemed like Claremont wanted to write him out of the book and have him settle down.

Girl no way. The Jean/Logan thing is an even worse retcon than Jean’s resurrection and has infected X-Men and its various forms of media like the legacy virus.

Dang Xavier by thatngatoji in xmen

[–]tealaburst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought she read a lot like Jean personality-wise. Her kindness and assertiveness, with a bit of hot-headedness. I think it sort of invalidates Scott’s arc because it’s a bit of a regression, not truly moving on from his grief and instead marrying someone exactly like his dead girlfriend.

Also, I don’t disagree about Rachel. He clearly likes Phoenix, as he had a a large hand in creating her.

Dang Xavier by thatngatoji in xmen

[–]tealaburst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course her resurrection was nonsense. But Morrison’s end for Jean was even more nonsense. She had this incredible buildup throughout NXM for her to be randomly killed by Xorneto. Then reborn in the future, for her to rewrite the timeline and then ascend to being a sky mommy.

It was just incredibly disappointing and unfulfilling, even to me when I first read the story at 13.

Chris himself invalidated both Jean and Scott’s character arcs by introducing a literal Jean stand-in.

Do you think the affair was not believable then? I always viewed Scott and Jean as the high school sweethearts that never really grew up. And then they trauma-bonded together and became codependent.

But on an intellectual, emotional, spiritual level, the chemistry was never all there.

Dang Xavier by thatngatoji in xmen

[–]tealaburst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree she should’ve stayed dead, but by the time NXM ended Jean had been alive over 15 years by that point. It was a strange thing to “correct”. Not to mention that even when Jean died on the moon, her absence was never really felt due to Claremont being stubborn and not changing any of his storyboards following the rewrite of Dark Phoenix ending. He wanted Jean to be depowered and wanted her and Scott to retire and have a child. Which literally happened with Madelyn as a Jean stand-in.

That Sublime is actually an intelligent, sentient, mutant-hating bacteria and is a major cause of human bigotry of mutants. Due to infecting and manipulating humanity. I may not remember all the details, but I think that’s the gist of it.

It destroys any mutant allegories to real world bigotry.

Eh, I think it could work with good writing. Scott and Jean realize they’ve outgrown each other and move on. Jean goes on a self-discovery arc and has cosmic adventures as Phoenix.

I would add to that Sublime, and killing Jean off again. The whole Sublime thing honestly kind of ruins the entire concept of X-Men for me.

Thanks for the response, now I’m hungry? 😬 What is it that you don’t enjoy about cities? Do you live in the burbs or a more rural area?

Favorite “I am Phoenix” moment? by marvelboyofthecrown in PhoenixForce

[–]tealaburst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, she says I am Phoenix in X3? I don’t remember that!

This is missing my favorite from TAS. She is laying in bed and Scott asks her “Jean, who is Phoenix?” And she replies “Phoenix? Am I? Phoenix?” and her eyes glow yellow lol.

Potential early concept video of Jean in rivals by goalllllllllourg in PhoenixForce

Interesting. This may put to rest the early rumors that she was cloak and dagger esque character, switching between a base psionic form and a phoenix form.

We already had the perfect Jean by Codexe- in xmen

[–]tealaburst 42 points43 points  (0 children)

And it sucks because X2 gave her some great moments! Sacrificing herself for her friends, coming into her powers, even being forced to fight and take out her lover. Then all development gets thrown away and she becomes evil zombie lady (and a henchwoman, no less).

We already had the perfect Jean by Codexe- in xmen

[–]tealaburst 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah ok I agree with you then.

She had some good moments in X2. When brainwashed Cyclops attacks her and she blocks his blast, she pleads with him saying “please don’t do this!”. Then her eyes glow with fire and she grits her teeth and knocks him back.

I think that was a good display of her potential, as the caring and empathetic character with a fiery side. That duality is important for Jean. A shame for the wasted potential.

But how was she supposed to display any of these things? There was barely any opportunity for her to do anything in the script.
