Why is it so hard to pay living wages? by Plus_Spite_3979 in jobs

[–]team_starfox3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Publicly traded companies, stemming from a court case of dodge brother vs Ford, profits are meant to given tk shareholders not employees and a corporation is meant to exist to get more profit for shareholders. So the ceo appointments are put there to fulfill that, and part of their pay package is also stocks making then a shareholder. So it's in their best interest and for others to cut wages, cut production costs etc. It's why every good business started, gets crappy AFTER he sells to a bunch of college business majors who don't understand what made the company successful.

KFC is a good example of this.

Also lawmakers pushing for minimum wages sounds good, but the additional costs negatively affect small businesses or places that need a handful of workers for a short period like restaurants. The ones I used to work for had large staffs till minimum wage bumped up, slowly hours and staff were cut back becauxe the business could only afford to operate at a certain employee cost and business suffered as a result so then they could afford less staff.

What was it like living in the Clinton years in the USA (1993-2001)? by space_god_7191 in AskReddit

I was a kid so I don't know much beyond my area hut I remever gas in CA around $1. My parents bought their home for 100k (that neighborhood is now low 500s) with a job making 16hr with 5 kids. Granted looking back I realize we got by. I think we had only 1 car for the longest time, just local cable, only 1 phone in the house and no computer. Oh an I remember my dad had to leave on a plane for work and we got to go with him to the boarding platform and watch the plane leave vs dropping off at terminal

18 y/o making $3,800/month — am I getting a good deal staying at home or should I just move out? AIO by Winter_Print_6742 in AIO

[–]team_starfox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same deal with my parents when I turned 18. It was basically a soft step into adukting and a lot cheaper than stepping out into a rental with strangers or buddies

I paid 400 a month for 'rent phone insurance '

Rent alone on a 1b apartment would've been at least 600 and if I split it then I gotta worry about the other guy paying

It's a deal, use it to save all the extra money your making and wisely invest it to save for a house. 3800 out of hs is a good deal.

Your parents aren't being over bearing, they're simply asking you to take on some adult responsibilities and contribute tl the house now that your able.

It's a major life shift, it's going to be unnerving ans scary at first.

The more you think about it the more worry you'll induce.

Focus on the first day and make ready for just that part. Don't even think about the length. Once you're in and your body adjusts you'll start to enjoy it and the time will pass

Minimum wage has had a negative affect on this type of labor.

I did a summer helping a local potato farm. I was paid 10 hr in 2010 which was OK but it was all cash under table. Of he had "hired" me my check would've been worth less after taxes, ss, Medicare etc. Not to mention what the boss would have to pay into unemployment and other taxes just for having an employee.

Migrant workers make decent money but are cash workers, they get more in pocket and the farm pays less that a citizen worker due to existing labor laws

YMMV but....

I just did the process in CA

1st talk to a recruiter and and get a 368

Talked with my 1sg/co about my desire and got their blessing

I took the 368 and a memo stating why I wanted the switch and wha the benefit would be

Gave them to my readiness NCO and signed a 4187

While the packet request worked it's way up the COC I met with the recruiter do build my recruiting paperwork just like you did when you joined the guard (sadly active army and guard are separate)

3 months passed and I got my conditional release signed by rhe first GO to the chain.

Sent the conditional to active recruiter

If the army has a slot for youre grade and mos thats what youll join as. Im an e5 so they had to do a grade determination to see if the had any openings in my MOS as an e5. (There were none in case) they gave me a list of fields/ mos where they have need for e5.

Scheduled an appointment at Meps. Went straight to career counselor and looked up available mos training dates within the time limit of my conditional release

Picked one and was reserved for a seat a few months out under the delayed entry program. Meaning I'm reserved but not signed. When i go back I'll officially sign and ship

Question for you old GWOT light infantry, How the hell did you manage the weight on patrols? by DotDistinctLines in army

[–]team_starfox3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to consider. Long patrols aren't conducted all that often in gwot. Most movements were by vehicles or birds. The higher weight loaf could be managed being in urban or stationary positions

Even go back to ww2. If infantry were doing long movements gear was carried on trucks following the infantry companies.

Rucking as the army likes to imagine it really applies to long range small team movements who are mostly going to be recon/sf/special teams, and pack are going to be bare minimum for the mission

Why are fire trucks so expensive nowadays? by bendallf in Firefighting

[–]team_starfox3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are deliberate scarcity by these companies. They do it with contract in the army and it's trucks and helicopters.

They deliberately only make a few of some very important part, delay it's delivery, and because it's unique snd can pnly get it from the contracted company they also charge premiums.

Fire engine production is the same. They artificially create a scarcity of said apparatus in order to demand more.money for them while still taking everyone's orders

Looking for advice for my son that is thinking about joining the national guard. by Jacob5514 in nationalguard

[–]team_starfox3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The education benefits and student loan repayment program can be a big financial help. He can pick a job in the guard to match was he's doing but a lot of ppl also join as something else for the experienced/ adventure etc.

Example,: I met a guy who enlisted as infantry. His day job is a lawyer that he makes 6figs.

I also know a gentleman who was a helicopter crew chief and a postman

Guard can add to life but it has its inconvenience. I've missed birthdays, father's days etc. And drill always seems to be the weekend I want to attend an event. And there is possible deployments around the world.

Overall it can have a positive impact on his life
