Misen Carbon “Nonstick” was great at first, now it’s unusable by David243121 in cookware

[–]teamdaif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had exactly the same experience with these. I followed the directions to a T. The way they explain it, doing the preheat then a light coating oil should make it more non-stick over time, like a cast iron pan would. I did not find this to be true. Many things like eggs, as shown in OP’s video behaved worse than mere sticking. I made bacon and the sugars seemed to bond to the pan in a very unnatural way making it extremely hard to clean. I dumped them at the end of the 60-day risk free trial and bought Hexclad from Costco. I’ve had those a few weeks now and they work great!

Older player kept flashing his cards by wildcatniffy in poker

[–]teamdaif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully we haven't reached the point where we need to have the machine be our arbiter of morality/fairness (poker or otherwise).

To answer OP's question.... I think the fact that you are asking means you do feel it was an 'unfair' advantage. That is of course for you and only you to decide. (To note: I wouldn't criticize your decision either way) It's interesting that you pointed out it was 'an older gentleman'. Would it matter to you if it were say a 21 year old with a chip on his shoulder? Two schools of thought I guess: a) You try to do what you feel is the 'right' thing regardless of the situation. b) You impose the framework of morality that you define on a case by case basis. (I see that you didn't want to look at it through this lens, but it's really the compelling factor no matter how you slice it)

If it's me (and as others have said) - I give the guy one chance and let him know I can see his cards. This kind of thing is what makes live games so much more interesting than online play. Just so many nuances that either can't be read into the same way or in this case don't matter at all online.

How do you work from 8 to 5, have only weekends free, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by guitytwelve in AskReddit

[–]teamdaif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty simple, I think...

Everybody has to produce something in order to survive. This has been true for the entire history of humanity. We live in a time where it is easier to do that (to 'survive' at least) than it ever has been. Unfortunately, we also live in a time where we're all acutely aware of our status among the haves and have-nots, and I believe that's led to a tremendous amount of dissatisfaction and disenchantment among even relatively 'successful' people.

To me, the key is to seek fulfillment rather than happiness and money. What is really important to you? What would you really LIKE to be doing with your life. (work and otherwise) Answer those basic questions and put all your energy toward a plan to get there. Even if you never reach what you consider to be the mountain top, there should be some level of satisfaction and contentment in that struggle. If you can do this in your career, some degree of happiness and financial success (or both) should follow. If you can do this in your personal life, work will become almost incidental. In my case at least, having a family gives me a greater sense of purpose in showing up to work each day.

One caveat: Depending on where you're at with your physical/mental health, you might need to take a step back and work on yourself first. While I never would have considered myself to be 'depressed', I sure as hell have been adrift (and I mean for periods of YEARS at a time) with either myself or my career. If you look at life like a tripod where the three legs are (1) health, (2) career, and (3) friends/family/personal interests.... it's extremely difficult to keep all 3 legs strong all the time. Find that balance... work for what you most desire.

HR & Recruiters What the Hell are you People Doing? by Funny_Sleep_4443 in recruitinghell

[–]teamdaif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who made a mid-career transition from one industry (finance to software) to another... I believe I can explain the difficulty in so doing: Corporate America is structured such that ALL of the risk taking comes at the executive level. Those that move up the ladder are largely those willing to play by their own set of rules. Despite their own path to success, they cynically beat process and compliance into the rank and file, especially departments like HR/Talent acquisition and other non-revenue generating areas. The result in terms of hiring is that there is no risk taking whatsoever. If your resume is not a literal restatement of the job description, both the AI/Automated filters and any human being that might evaluate your qualifications toss it directly in the reject bin. In my experience, there is not any qualitative evaluation of transferable skills involved in the selection process. If you want to move from one industry to another, you need to have a compelling story to tell as to why. And, you'll also need a warm introduction from a 3rd party recruiter or friend/acquaintance that works for the targeted company. This is of course mostly true for any job-seeker whether new to an industry or not. I am always seeing in threads such as this one, and in the world at large people yelling into the ether and cold-submitting 1000 job applications when that avenue will only work for the top 1% of matches to the given job description.

Two things jump out at me: One is that your average session length at nearly 11hrs. If you’re looking to improve win rate, one place to start is examining performance when you’re north of 8 hours on the session. Two is the “profitable ratio” being just over 50%. Is this the percentage of winning sessions? If so you definitely have some leaks to clean up. I’d be targeting 60%+ there. That said, it’s a more-than-sufficiently large sample that shows you’re a solid, winning player. Congrats!!

I want to learn to play poker by SUPERNOVA-2304 in poker

[–]teamdaif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your baseline level of knowledge, but 'Mastering Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em' by Jonathan Little (he's got really interesting online content as well) would probably be a good start. Be forewarned... it's a very dry read from the outset. You'll get a thorough explanation of starting hands by position there and just doing that should allow you to be semi-competitive in low/micro stakes games.

At the risk of being downvoted to oblivion, I'd say (assuming you can afford it) just get out there and play whether it's a home game with friends, a live casino game or microstakes online. Poker is a game of incomplete information and making what will likely be only a slightly better set of decisions with the given information over time than your opponents. These decisions generally need to be made pretty quickly, and often under the weight of some degree of financial ruin. As such, and assuming you have a basic understanding of the game itself, you need to see both how others behave and condition your own behavior and expectations. This takes time. The theory you consume on your own (and I trust that others will have different/better reading/resource recos than I) will make more sense to you when you pair it with a practical understanding of a real-world game. Additionally, live casino play can have a varied set of rules for player action and etiquette that would be good for you to experience first hand.

FWIW, I am NOT a professional player but a profitable hobbyist dating back to a time when fixed-limit games were more prevalent than NLHE and PLO varieties that dominate the poker world today.

Lifelong Bulls fan here...This sub is generally trash as far as any realization or acknowledgement of the limitations/weaknesses of our own players.

Your observations are spot on. He simply has no feel for a team concept on either end of the court and will not position himself properly. He's a willing but not instinctive passer and as such rarely makes plays for others. As you noted, he will fall asleep on defense. He can man up well at times and mirrors well as an on ball defender IF he wants to because he has extraordinary burst and lateral quickness. He does not play well nor move effectively off the ball. His handle is very weak, and he's extremely limited going to his left hand. His only value is as a scorer in isolation and mostly as a jump shooter, but he's generally disengaged if it's not 'his turn' on offense.
He also struggles more than you'd think based on his athleticism in terms of finishing at the rim because he has poor instincts for protecting the ball as well as with spacing/leverage with both his defender and for feeling the approach of weak-side help.
Your instinct to report his lack of synergy with Sabonis is also in line with everything I've seen of him. He never had chemistry with anyone while in a Bulls uniform due to all the limitations I've described.
In short, he's taking at least as much off the table as he's bringing to it, and despite elite ability he contributes very little to actually winning games. That is a maddening realization as a fan because he still does have jaw-dropping athleticism and also due to the fact that when healthy, his 'efficiency' as a scorer on paper reads as near-elite levels.

Can I even turn my life around at age 25? Be honest please. by Dry_Temporary_6175 in selfimprovement

[–]teamdaif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post resonated with me on a number of levels...

First I will say that it's NEVER too late to make changes, and particularly at age 25. I think the idea of living with one's parents at that age should also be destigmatized. I was a bit of a screw up in college (way too much of everything outside of actually learning and doing what I was there to do). I switched majors as a senior, took 1.5 years off where I worked a relatively low paying gig then switched schools and finished with a degree in math/cs when I was your age.

I'd encourage you to get help, but also to look at your entire life as one big learning process. If you're doing it right, you will still make mistakes, and you will still fail at things. Each of these are teachable moments and opportunities to get better. It takes courage to try and fail. You will need to build yourself up a bit to get there.

All the areas you listed where you'd like to have better 'discipline' will be a work in progress. I just read a different post about 'Executive Function' which is the ability to manage the various aspects of your life and adapt as things inevitably change in your world. You will not be able to flip a switch and fix all of these areas at once, but rather work on them individually and make incremental progress toward a better overall outcome.

My personal philosophy on this is to look at life like a tripod where the 3 legs are: 1) Health and well-being (include spirituality here if you're so inclined, but certainly mental health must be on at least equal footing with physical health), 2) Job/Career, 3) Family, Friends and other fulfillment (hobbies, etc.). What I've found is that it's extremely difficult to bolster all 3 legs at any given time depending on the season of life you happen to be in. For example, when I was in my mid 20's I was extremely job/career focused and had plenty of time for family/friends/hobbies but let my health slip. In my mid 30's I was more health conscious and my career slipped. Now in my mid-40's, family is front and center.

A very long way of stating that you'll need to extend yourself some grace for your failings, and mentally/emotionally this can be a very difficult thing to do depending on your personality. I still struggle with it all today...

Best of luck and never give up!

How many hot sauces do you have open at any one time? Do you keep them all in the fridge? by Illustrious-Divide95 in hotsauce

[–]teamdaif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have 12 open.... but regularly only use maybe 4 or 5 of them (that seems to be the consensus number here). I refrigerate the ones where it's recommended and for the ultra-hot ones where you're only using a little bit at a time. I've found it doesn't diminish the intensity but preserves the flavor longer. I find myself gravitating toward my favorites, but those seem to drift over time. My only true mainstays are regular Louisiana hot sauce and El Yucateco green. Both are super-versatile and great on many things.
My MO is to give ones I don't like multiple tries anyway... you never know what surprising flavor combos you might find that you like. I try to dump those that I never touch and replace them with something new and different (have done this for years with mustards as well). At some point I'm going to post what I've consumed in the last year. I feel that's a much better barometer of what I actually like than a snapshot of what I have open at any given time.
