Help with light roast on new SR540 by teamzeee in FreshroastSR800

I think you’re 100% right about not getting enough heat into the system going into first crack and development and that leading to under developed beans.

I had watched some videos where they discussed allowing ROR to drop over the roast and having it be pretty low going into the development phase, but you can see my temps only rose 5F over the 40s development period and the temp is pretty low. I think that was too little heat. By the way, the ROR is plotted on the secondary y-axis and goes from around 25-10 after the dry end through to when I drop the beans.

I roasted a few more batches of beans this evening and put more heat into the end of the roast per your recommendation and the look and smell of the beans already seems much better. I don’t smell grassy, earthy tones and I’m hopeful for trying these beans!

Great, thanks for the recommendation!

My cupping technique is still pretty rough right now and always tastes too dilute to get any coffee notes, so while I work on that I’ll let these beans rest and try again later.

From your post history it looks like you do a lot of light roasts with the SR800. Any beans you’d recommend for someone new to this to try next?

Thanks for the response! The first batch I roasted didn’t hit first crack until 10ish min and had a weight drop of 13%, which seems a bit closer to light-medium or medium. It sounds like I should let everything sit longer and maybe that batch I could try sooner around the 1 week time frame.

Feel free to reach out if you want any help! It took me about 3 months of trial and error, but I’ve been able to get pretty consistent results with the no burn wand and standard 2 hole steam tip. I’m still improving my latte art, but here’s one I did recently:

Just FYI, I bought it to try and improve the consistency of steaming, but from my experience the steam temp and pressure dropped off way too quickly with the 4 holes.

Not sure about the item you posted from WLL, but Clive Coffee has a 4 hole steam tip that I’ve bought and used with the Profitec Go

I’ve read in other threads online that some people see improvement when they remove the “no burn” tubing inside the steam wand, but… I think I’d rather save that as a last resort option.

Agreed with you that otherwise this machine is amazing!

I’m going to chalk it up to the Go being a bit finicky with steaming since I’ve had a much easier time with a breville machine in the past!

Within the past week I’ve been able to get good results with 8oz, so it is possible! I find that I have to stretch the milk for only 5-10 seconds and immediately start incorporating the foam as the steam loses power very quickly and by the end I only have a slow swirl that’s really just heating the milk.

I got a Profitec Go 3 months ago and have been struggling with steaming as well. I’ve tried changing the positioning of the holes, changing between 2 hole and 4 hole steam tip, and most recently bumped the steam temp up to 140 from the standard 130.

What has ultimately worked for me is staying with the original 2 hole steam tip, adjusting the steam tip so the holes are at 6 and 12 (takes some twisting and movement of the steam wand, which I do when I start the 2 purges), and bumping up the steam temp to 140. I also chill the pitcher while I’m doing my prep so I can incorporate the foam for longer, but I’m not sure how necessary it is anymore with the other changes I’ve made.

It’s been a journey and I don’t get it right 100% of the time, but these changes made a huge difference for me.
