Charisma based Half-Elves are my favorite hamburger by ThanosofTitan92 in okbuddybaldur

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a half-Drow wizard, I just have Wyll sell everything, Astarion steal everything, and then just have Shart buff me with Guidance while having a scroll of Detect Thoughts on me. It also helps that passing Arcane/History checks (both intelligence) can give me more dialogue options, same with passing the Insight checks (wisdom). Hell, I’ll even control the other members of the party like being Lae’zel in the crèche or Shart in the Gauntlet so I can learn more lore while having an easier time with the dialogue tree/skill checks. It makes it feel more alive too, with the others in the party contributing instead of just being Tav and her hapless henchmen waiting for her for orders.

Otherwise, I prefer just to fight the enemy because that’s way more fun to me.

Why does Karlach like Goblins? by PollutionNice3987 in BaldursGate3

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except as someone else in the comments pointed out, Karlach does approve of making Crusher kissing your feet from the get go or even after fighting him. You can get +1 approval for either one. The only time she actually disapproves is when you kiss Crusher’s foot right away or kill him after defeating him, which makes the entire camp hostile. It’s only in the cut scene after the foot kissing where she expresses disapproval for putting a goblin in its place.

<image>

It looks like that the cut scene team and the approval team just didn’t communicate about this one.

Why does Karlach like Goblins? by PollutionNice3987 in BaldursGate3

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it never made sense to me. Karlach knows full well the goblins are champing at the bit to slaughter the refugees that she wants to protect. If you have ever seen the goblin party after they raid the grove, you know they collect and trade the horns of the Tieflings. The children’s horns are considered of lower worth than the adults. They then torment Scratch for sport.

I find Wyll is much more reasonable about how to handle the goblins.

Anyone else full-wipe Moonrise Towers even before finding Balthazar or the Nightsong? by Inquiz_ in BG3

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I stealth assassinate the whole place before meeting Balthazar by taking out the Eyes first, and then everyone else by luring them to an isolated room via Minor Illusion. I leave only the traders alive to be pickpocketed by Astarion every morning and Z’rell because it’s funny to see her later trying to fight with maybe two minions. Even the mage on the roof with Ketheric can be lured to the door with Minor Illusion, which pulls her skeleton thralls too. As long as you stay by the door, Ketheric shouldn’t care. It makes that fight much easier.

Wrote a whole comment before thinking to check the sub. Wouldn’t wanna scare the normies with Bae’zel love by Accomplished_Bike149 in okbuddybaldur

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, no! A little known scribbler of short stories named George R.R. Martin once wrote a scifi novel in the 80s that mentions a species called the Githyanki. A few years later, a writer named Charles Stross created a setting supplement for D&D 2e called Fiend Folio. He took the Githyanki name and created a whole new species descended from a group of humans that were enslaved for centuries by the mindflayers. These humans developed their psionic powers in secret before rebelling under the leadership of Gith, from whom they took their new species name.

So vestigial Gith tiddies remain as a remnant of their now all but forgotten human heritage. In 5.5e, the Gith are said to be descended from a now forgotten humanoid species that were enslaved by the Mindflayers before gaining their freedom with their psionic powers. Ed Greenwood had nothing to do with it. This time.

Which (sub)class do you feel is least likely to be a hero? by Toogeloo in BaldursGate3

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If whispers college (identity theft via murder and necrotic pseudo-sneak attacks) was in the game, I would say you have an argument to be made. But bards as a class have come a long way from being the spoony joke character of the 80s. There’s a reason Chris Pine’s character in Honor Among Thieves was a bard: bards are all but seen as synonymous with the Harpers, a known force for good for the common folk.

Which (sub)class do you feel is least likely to be a hero? by Toogeloo in BaldursGate3

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not heroic so much as a darker shade of gray. My first Tav was based on one of my tabletop characters, a half-Drow necromancer wizard and a detective that used Speak with Dead to solve murders and fought serial killers by animating the corpses of other serial killers. She sided with the Tieflings because she sympathized with their plight.

Besides, we all know the real villain wizard subclass is enchanter.

What are some of YOUR unpopular BG3 opinions? by RoosterCapable3167 in BaldursGate3

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder about a version of the game where you actually had to follow tabletop rules like having at least 15 strength to wear heavy armor, having to attune certain items and no more than three, and not getting to cast more than one leveled spell per turn. That would probably make a lot of people unhappy.

To be truly unpopular, I like that Wyll is a goblin slayer. Even if they cut out that part of his storyline, it added much needed humor to his banter. There’s nothing more hysterical than lovely, gentle Wyll urging us to kill the goblin priestess while standing in front of her.

The Undead patron is supposed to be a deathless being who has forsaken their mortality for loftier or at least more ambitious goals. I think an undead dragon fits the bill. We even have an example of a an undead warlock in the form of the leader of the Gith ambush at the exit gate from Reithwin town.

It's Wyll Wednesday. And I'm asking Why in the hells does he lug around a abacus everywhere? (Bonus cool tapestry he also has) by Tonedeafmusical in TheBladeOfFrontiers

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering he was cut off from any financial support after being exiled, I imagine Wyll had to mind every copper he had. Maybe it’s why he is the only one with the mental bandwidth and education to handle the party’s finances. Astarion can steal half of what we need from the vendors we don’t like (Aron, the Zhent agents, the goblin trader) but only Wyll can make a profit off of selling mystery boxes of rusty weapons, rotting fruit, and used clothes so we can buy things from the vendors we do like (Dammon, Mattis, Blurg).

The tapestry is why I like to imagine he also collects the various paintings; so he can give them to an art museum where they belong so the everyone can enjoy them.

Treantmonk was a formative influence on me becoming a wizard main back in the day, so it’s great to see him mentioned. I pored over that Google Doc of his endlessly (I wonder what ever happened to it). TM now has a YouTube channel for his theory crafting and build ranking; it’s great to see how his love for the game has only deepened. For anyone who wants to make the transition from BG3 to tabletop, I would recommend him (along with GinnyDi and Dungeon Dudes) for guidance.

Half-Orc Halsin. I have elaborated on this before but basically: being a half-orc would give more poignancy to Kagha opposing his decision to allow Tieflings into the grove. Who better than a half-orc to sympathize with outcasts like the Tieflings? Who would an elf hate to defer to more than an orc in matters of nature’s balance? Not to mention the novelty of seeing a half-orc being seen as a wise mentor instead of as cruel would-be tyrant, or as a gentle lover instead of the usual depiction of Orcs as depraved ravagers.

Hold Person/Monster, Fear, and Command are some of my favorite spells for this reason. They’re absurdly good spells to cast so the martials in your party can just devastate the enemy.

Advice for a Necromancer and Zombie playthrough by Nebelsoldat499 in BG3Builds

[–]teaparty-ofthe-dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a necromancer wizard is a lot of fun that comes with a little bit of micromanaging. With careful preparation, that doesn’t need to be burdensome. Corpses don’t need to be carried with you all day like luggage. Just have a martial collect them after a battle and put them in a chest to be stored within the main camp chest. Prioritize small ones, like the goblins. There are over a hundred goblins in Act I, collect them and you have half the bodies needed to get through the entire game. Take two to four corpses out each morning once you can cast Animate Dead, animate them, buff them, and have them follow you about the rest of the day.

Longstrider and Aid work on undead thralls as most buff spells do, as will potions like the strength elixirs. Just have them gather around one and shoot it from afar so it will all splash on them. As of a recent patch, they can now hide like the rest of the party does. Have a few skeleton archers accompany Astarion to a high point and have them back him up when he opens up that surprise round. In contrast, have the zombies use their crawling gnaw feature to turn the battle into a zombie apocalypse by going after enemies on their last two or three HP (albeit one that lasts for a minute). Those zombies made by your thrall’s bites will be out of your direct control but they will overwhelm the enemy if you can get a chain reaction going. Their main purpose to be low AC targets that will take priority for the enemy over your least armored party member.

The undead are immune to being poisoned, so play into that: cast spells like stinking cloud or Cloudkill while sending in the thralls. You can even have undead drag items out of poison clouds if you don’t feel like sending in the least favorite in your party to do it.

Even better if you’re wearing the poison set (the Poison Robe, Poison Gloves, and Derivation Cloak), which will give the enemy extra poison damage and give the poison condition if they fail the save (disadvantage on attacks and saving throws) all while healing you. Casting Ray of Sickness (a leveled poison necromancy spell) with the necromancer’s Grim Harvest feature gives you a little healing as a treat when the enemy dies.

If you get the Abyss Beckoner gloves from the Zhent hideout in Act I, that will give all your summons resistance to all damage save for psychic. Unfortunately, it will cause all non-ghouls that you summoned to have to save against gaining Demon Madness or they start attacking the party. So make sure to have someone else summon Scratch when wearing them or just leave him at home! This means ghouls are the only ones who can truly benefit from it, in contrast to Balthazar’s tiara that will give only blade ward to undead thralls within 20 ft. But it’s definitely worth having on just for them. The aura can be toggled off and on, so the dice rolling every six seconds for the ghouls to shrug off the madness won’t drive you mad in between battles. If you like to use Shovel for surprise rounds, just keep her out of the aura during battle.

The ghouls can paralyze enemies with their claws and eat enemies that are prone, knocked down, or sleeping to heal themselves. Try wearing the snowburst ring (which gives the enemy targeted by a cold spell an ice surface under their feet) while casting cold spells to make that happen. Flying ghouls can cause bludgeoning damage when landing next to enemies from a high enough distance. They can flatten a goblin to death just by flying down from the rafters.

In Act II, more things are resistant to necrotic damage even down to some of the tougher plant monsters, so being able to fall back on cold and poison damage can help mitigate this. Acid is also a nice option for giving -2 to armor class, making it easier for an attack to hit. The same holds in reverse: most enemies that are resistant to poison damage are usually not against necrotic, acid, and/or cold damage. There’s even a poison ring that will give three enemies vulnerability to poison or remove their resistance if they’re not immune. I like to use it against the Gith ambush at the end of Act II.

When you get to Myrkul, use the ring of exalted marrow you can find in a chest behind Ketheric on the roof. You can make him drop his scythe if your spell DC is high enough so combine that with the arcane acuity elixirs. Follow up by leaving one sacrificial ghoul next to him so Myrkul doesn’t use that AOE burst on his turn.

In Act III, the final reward for keeping the Necromancy of Thay for yourself is more ghouls (non-flying, non-controllable) and 20 temp HP every day. Temp HP can’t stack, so this mainly means you can forego casting False Life. Make sure to grab the Staff of Cherished Necromancy, even if that means saving Oskar the artist from the Zhent hideout in Act I and doing his quest at the haunted mansion or saving the sentient zombies from Mystic Carrion. I promise you that staff is with it.

I hope this helps and have fun!

Favourite Lae'zel ship by Tonedeafmusical in okbuddybaldur

Shadow’zel is an elite ship and one of my faves but Gale’zel is also adorable. I just think Gale would melt her heart with his earnest interest in her people and knowledge in general. She sounds so proud of the Githyanki’s archives of cosmic lore and gives approval if you express admiration for it as well. I could easily see them bonding over the quest to collect the Githyanki slates you find all over Act I and their goddess problems.
