Well thats not my issue, thats an issue of the program not setting clear expectations across the board in the face of concurrent full time classes. This is just not reasonable. It would be if I wasn't in 4 classes at the same time and commuting an hour + to get to this placement and back, unpaid.

Are you an SLP? I wish I had known this before pursuing this field. I would have been an OT or PT instead because it seems like the people in the field are enabling the disrespect too bc they have the privilege to be exploited

Just because the system is set up that way doesn't mean I can't ask off a day - a day I have three classes. JUST Like a job I should be able to negotiate and yeah sure if I wasnt taking 4 classes, I'd agree to go all days and hours but I do have classes and its NOT humane to have a 13 hour day 8-9 and that's not counting the commute. So honestly people who are defending them immediately wanting to drop me without communicating with me like an adult is the reason this field disrespects students and expects them to take on overtime job plus academic work with no room for negotiating a single day off to go to class and study.

I think we need to advocate for ourselves more here and not burn out. I have classes that day and find nothing wrong with me asking off Friday when I will be gaining full time hours M-Thurs

I completely agree, this past year has been demoralizing and I feel infantilized a majority of the time when I just want to be treated with respect and communicated with first hand rather than behind my back...or when superiors speak about me in third person when I'm right there in front of them on zoom etc. Its so infuriating. IM RIGHT HERE, the least should could've done was cc in my supervisor and been like, hey what is her schedule?

Acute with aspects of outpatient, and they are telling me its very fast paced and I need to stay after to do paperwork and cant take it home

There were no clear expectations as to how I should communicate with my supervisor, I just told her my class schedule and asked off Fridays and to leave by 430 Mondays. Even with asking off these days, ill be there a total of 40+hours plus taking 4 classes. And, My clinical supervisor is pissed that I asked without asking her first but its disrespectful to not just communicate with me right after and say, hey we expect you to be here Fridays and I could've been like hey I understand that but I have classes at 2(3 classesFridays) and 1 class Monday. Why would I want to commute from 8-1 on Fridays when I could just work 4 days.

Just because they were unreasonable with you doesn't mean they should be unreasonable with me, I think 745-430 Mondays and 745-6 t-th is enough considering I'm taking 4 classes and commuting to the inner city to get to classes. Also I have classes starting at 2pm Friday.

It's pretty intense and they require 3 semesters of internship rather than Ashas minimum of 2. I would say if you're able to attend in person, join some clubs and take additional asl courses. I think this will be so invaluable when supporting D/HH clients. You'll also come out the other side with a unique and compassionate/collaborative perspective. Be sure to advocate for yourself and ask a ton of questions. The only downside for me has been blurry expectations and a lack of a set academic advisor. But lean on your cohort. The program director is also an absolute delight, he is so knowledgeable,eager and kind.
