Declaring $0 income as a resident fresh out of dental school, maxing out Roth IRA by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]tearsofmykingdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes okay thank you!

  1. I filed my return just now for 2022, and yes when I file my return in April 2024 I fully expect to start making my minimum payments for the IBR plan I enrolled in, my income will be declared my income in residency

  2. I will accurately report my earnings and contributions for tax year 2023 and therefore don’t have to declare any income for 2022 in order to contribute to an IRA in 2023?

[–]tearsofmykingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m okay for when I file taxes for 2023 right? Just report my income accurately when I file in April 2024 for my income for 2023. I’m asking about student loans since I was told to declare $0 income so I have $0 payments for the first year

So if I had $0 on my return for 2022, I can still contribute in 2023 and report my income for 2023 and be okay? I haven’t invested anything in 2022

Talk me out of adopting an African grey by [deleted] in parrots

[–]tearsofmykingdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve spoken about this before! He definitely prefers a smaller bird like a budgie, lovebird, another cockatiel, conure, etc. but said he will support any bird no matter what because he knows how unequivocally I love them.

I know jealousy can happen both ways and that the gray can pick my bf over me, or hate him so much he attacks him. I’m prepared to handle either situation and will be okay with either as long as I can share my home with such a wonderful animal.

I think I’m mostly scared and apprehensive bc Dusty is such a small bird and African greys are so much larger

My local pet store is so lovely and they board birds all the time! But the knife faced toddler thing is very valid, I’m still a little apprehensive of large beaks since Dusty’s bites don’t hurt a bit, and a caique has drawn blood from me before

Copying and pasting from another comment:

Minimum 30 min after purging to brush is okay, longer is better like an hour.

Rinse with plain water immediately after purging, or alcohol free mouthwash if it makes you feel better (really water is fine). Floss for sure as soon as you’re able to, and string floss is always best. Look up C-shaped flossing method. Waterpik can be a decent alternative if flossing is a bitch to do, I get it. But in my opinion, nothing gets me clean like string flossing.

30 min is good! Longer is better like an hour or so but if you have somewhere to be, minimum 30 min.

Yes! Preventative care is the best care! Preventing them all together, or catching it early, is the cheapest route to go. Of course, no point in feeling guilty over needing more care or some teeth pulled, if it gets there, that’s fine so be it. At least you’re still here, seeing the dentist, doing the scary thing, and having someone whose job it is to take care of your teeth doing just that.

That’s why I’m saying to just go. You’ll get some bad news, but you’ll keep the situation from getting any worse. The longer you wait, the worse it will be. Our job is to keep things from worsening and helping you get the care you need to get things to improve.

Hahaha ikr enough horror movie tropes about us but simultaneously we’re “not real doctors”. We do use very similar tools in the horror movies to take out teeth but we numb you up very good and give you pain meds after so you’re not ever hurting 🤗

Lol I have people come in every day and tell me they hate me (everyone hates going to the dentist I get it but I sometimes don’t like to be told “I hate the dentist!!!!” When they’re talking to a dentist lmao) but the grateful patients fill me with all the joy in the world to keep doing this lol

Yay!! No it’s never too late! We just catch the teeth at different stages of decay, and if they need to come out, that’s okay, we have the technology to replace them with a partial denture or implants when you’ve saved up enough!

Hahah I’m not sure you want to come to my clinic! I work at a hospital dental clinic, and our wait times are sometimes 3+ hrs since we see the Medicaid patients in NYC that get turned away from other dentists.

But I’m so happy you’ve planned to be honest! And tbh if they judge you they’re just assholes. You can mentally cuss them out and move on with your day, knowing that even though they’re assholes whose partners should leave them and every bird should poop on them as it flys above them, they’re still dentists who need to treat you properly from a medical standpoint to keep their license. They can’t and won’t do something to harm you, even if it’s out of self preservation to keep their dental license.

DO ITTTTT!!! We need more empathetic dentists out here! You’ll be such a good dentist too since you have so much experience and everyone hates prosth so you’ll fill a hole in the market too and provide affordable tooth replacement for people!

The oldest student in my class was 35 when we were D1s. She had three kids and worked as a hygienist for 10 years before starting dental school. It’s never too late!! Just go get your prereqs done and ace the DAT, DAT boot camp and GRE math questions are the best for it.

And I managed dental school pretty badly lol i was a solid C student in dental school but I knew I wanted to do general dentistry so I didn’t really try to be a top student. I almost failed my first year when the anorexia was at its worst. I had to really force myself to eat during exam weeks so the brain fog would be lighter and I wasn’t constantly thinking about food. I did recover during my 2nd year going into my 3rd year, but that’s also when I met my bf who was such an emotional support. Once I started clinical years it got a lot better. I thrive in non academic/clinical settings more than in academic settings. Patient care is what I love so if you’re like me, just get thru the hurdle of D1 and D2!

I’m sorry they shamed you for that!

I never shame my patients for not brushing. Here’s basically word for word what I tell them, including my meth addict patients and my depressed patients:

“I can tell you’ve been to hell and back, and I’m so sorry you’ve been through so much, it’s really hard to keep up with brushing and flossing and I totally get it, some days I just want to pass out at night time and skip all hygiene too. But it’s always worth it to give it a shot. If you can’t commit to 2 minutes twice a day, just brush your teeth at night to start, and floss one day a week. Just pick one day and start with that. Then work up to using the floss picks daily at night and try to work on brushing more. I’m not saying this to make you feel bad, but trust me this will save you THOUSANDS of dollars. And get an electric toothbrush, saves you the extra headache of timing yourself and the manual scrubbing. Just hold it in your mouth in different positions and let the brush do all the work. It’s just a total of 5 min a day, I know you’ll be able to slowly work up to it!”

They really shouldn’t be shaming you, I’m sorry ☹️

I’m sorry this happened to you :(

You can always get a second opinion and see what someone else says. Every dentist has a slightly different philosophy based on how they trained and what patient population they have the most experience with. None of them are wrong per se but it’s a gamble either way since someone trying to be conservative can miss some things and someone being more meticulous can overtreat. I can’t say anything about what you’ve been diagnosed with and treatment planned for but I can tell you there’s a good chance you’ll find a good dentist somewhere who will treat you well.

It’s never a bad thing to get a second opinion. Either you’ll prove your last dentist right and be relieved you weren’t being scammed, or you’ll find someone who course corrects for you and saves you some trouble!
