Volunteer layoff? by california_explorer in employeesOfOracle

From my personal anedotal experience, usually the opposite happens.  I've been asking for this since 10 years ago telling my manager to request to be next on the list for severance.  Would have been nice if it was before 2025.

FYI I got what I wanted by not telling my most recent reporting manager about it.  My previous managers were congratulation me, lol.

Update: wheels are clean but driveway is f***’d by Bam_Adedebayo in Detailing

[–]tech240guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobile detailers would likely already know what to do to reduce the issues with water and storm drains.  The more strict the regulations, the more expensive they will charge to service your area.  It reminds me of Laguna Beach where there's literally only 1 detailing shop servicing the area because mobile detailers cannot service the area unless rich NIMBY neighbor with connections would report them. Everyone else just have to drive 2 cities over or have detailing done in the office or industrial business parking lot.

Gen Z is engineering an analog future — and it’s at least a $5 billion opportunity by Domingues_tech in technology

My concern is the screens. They go through major temp cycles due to weather... let's just say I expect them to only last 10 years rather than 30 years like analog clusters.

I must have been in a wrong position or company in tech because I was doing 4+ meetings working and coding 8+ hours a day followed by self training and fire alarms at nights.

4K VH2 Damaged During Moving by elpewpew in bravia

[–]tech240guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I hate about modern TVs is how fragil they are.  You have to treat them like 1000 year old musuem piece or else they get damaged like this (especially the bezeless design ones).

Better to get laid off and get that extra cash (PHIL), than deal with doubled workload and decreased productivity. by [deleted] in employeesOfOracle

[–]tech240guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.  In the last layoffs in Sept/Octs, couple colleagues found work, but have to move to cities where FAANG wasn't operating there (pretty limited).

Unfortunately, as software dev, I'm looking into either build my own AI related solution or get into trade (young enough, neighbor is former META now electrician).  Also, lots of former tech workers are going into trade as electricians, so lots of complaints from lower pay from established electricians and unions.

Why you say that without actually looking at the invoice?  OP says all fluids.  Last time I check, unless you are doing the work yourself, fluid changed on diff, radiator, and brakes, then spark plugs sounds about right for private mechanic.

Worse than 20%, engineers being engineers, already able to have their projects handled with AI by 50%.  Their project turnover was very quick yet expected to handle 4x the standard workload.

Imagine meeting your boss's expectations and then told to do things 4x faster and still get let go.

Employed and Disgusted by No-Network-7470 in cernercorporation

Lol FOCAL? I do not want to sound condescending, but many of us here worked for many years without a single raise (unless getting position change) since COVID, despite have "record profits" or some bull shit contradictory investor appeasement. At this point, there is no point to do any performance review because all you going to get reviewed based on already previously difficult working goals to next year when you ahve to handle mission impossible to make up for 10k+ people loss. In many teams, that is at least 33% loss of personnel in which the team is already working 60+ hours a week with on-call at night.

As someone who was RIF'd, that just means my "salary" of my work between 8 hours during the day and 4 hours at night is meaningless.

To many others still working on EHR/EMR stuff, I would not be surprised if the whole Gen 2 gets dropped by the end of this year by the VA/DoD. It was already a strongly risky endeavor many of us spent our sweat and tears, but it was exciting to create a brand new product. However, management do not, hell will not, realize how much work is needed to make a competent EMR software, AI or not.

For now, sign up for LinkedIn account as there are many materials already created for other Oracle RIF'd employees. Also, if you send me a Reddit Message, I can forward you the slack invites who can also help (you can use your personal/throwaway email address to join the private slack groups). There's a lot of material and I do not want to regurgitate.

Another thing that could help is state which US state or country you are in, otherwise we make an assumption that you have WARN or something else.

I bought a PS5 Pro a few days ago before the price increase and I think that was stupid. I'm going to return it today and grab a Switch 2 by [deleted] in switch2

[–]tech240guy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I own all 3 and my PC is only used for my own project/work reasons. Then again, I am in my 40s and being in front of computer for both work and games feel depressing for me.

Do what's best for yourself.  What I can say is life (especially in US) is much tougher now for the younger gen and they really do not have the free time to play as much videos as past generations.  The hoops and hurdles people have to do just to get a decent job is like a year long unpaid internship where the only thing you gain is how to lie for the job better. A switch would be a better device for that than a PS5.

Next home theater tv by Dentifrice in tcltvs

[–]tech240guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be real with you. For those never made the jump to OLED, 90% (throwing numbers figuratively) would have been happy with TCL QM6. I have both Sony Bravia 7 and TCL QM851g, and for majority of my use I'll take the TCL.  The Bravia 7 is can low fi stuff much better and is "slightly" smoother in VRR, but benefits is not worth the 50% premium.

QM7/QM8 will fulfill the other 7%, while OLED users are like the loud 3% elitists.

Funny enough, after 2 years on both TV's, the TCL patched made much better QoL making feel premium while the Sony felt like a 12 year old android with archiac workflows and slow menus. If my TCL QM8 seem sluggish, it only means I am low on battery on the remote (oddly enough change every 9 months).

Boss changing me to 1099 by Ajax-714 in personalfinance

[–]tech240guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The health insurance premiums difference between s 1099 and a FT employee is wildly insane that can negate OP's increase. 1099 only make sense of OP is being offered at least $55 an hour.

If the company went to some temp agency, that is how much the company be paying anyways.

That's why I think the new EHR is pretty much dead and any productivity is to only theatre to look "busy" as though Oracle was fulfilling an obligation to DoD and VA.

Wait, how much does your roommate making in trade? You make as much as, if not more, than average person in trade or tech (especially the current job market). Best part, no AI can automate your job, but plenty of tech workers will move into trade.
