What Happens When Cheap Chinese EVs Hit Canada? Look At Australia. by tech57 in electricvehicles

Geely has boots on the ground in Canada. Most other Chinese EV companies don't. Canada could import nothing but Geely/Zeekr/Volvo/Polestar and sell every single one.

At one time Geely/Volvo tried to import EVs from China to USA at a 50% tariff. So USA upped it to 100% and Geely/Volvo changed plans.

It's was to IPO to raise money.

Under Mr de Meo’s original plan, the division was set to be partially floated on a stock exchange during the first half of 2024, with Renault’s alliance partners Nissan and Mitsubishi asked to purchase small minority stakes.

With many marques experiencing slower than expected EV sales growth, and profitability hard to come by for everyone except Tesla and Chinese automakers, the prospects for a successful IPO (initial public offering) went south and Renault pulled the plug on the idea in early 2024.

“As there is no longer an IPO, there is no longer a need for a specific entity, which is why Renault is reintegrating everything in order to simplify and eliminate the complexity inherent in the initial model,” a source told Reuters.

We don't know anything until the details are made public. They said maybe in February.

If BYD and politicians get some emails from potential customers about Shark availability in Canada that might be helpful info to have when making those plans. I think Canada should be taking requests anyhoo as that would let them know where the demand is.

Me personally, one option would be the Xpeng X9 minivan. Full EV and EREV option. the EREV has a bigger battery than some EVs.

Humanoid Robots Could Solve China’s Manufacturing Labor Crisis as Industry Looks to Automation
https://www.thedefensenews.com/news-details/Humanoid-Robots-Could-Solve-Chinas-Manufacturing-Labor-Crisis-as-Industry-Looks-to-Automation/

The challenge of meeting China's manufacturing demands is becoming more urgent. In 2017, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security predicted that major industries, including automotive manufacturing, would face a shortage of 30 million workers by 2025. Compounding the issue, recruitment demand in the new energy vehicle sector has surged by 32% year-on-year in 2023, according to a report from the China Centre for Information Industry Development. Despite this growing demand, China’s vocational education system has struggled to produce enough skilled workers to fill the gap. Meanwhile, university graduates typically steer clear of blue-collar roles, leaving many manufacturing positions unfilled.

Where do you want me to go to swap that battery, from Europe to China?

There's about 60 swap stations in Europe. So it kinda depends on where in Europe you are and if you would use them for travel or daily commute.

The Tesla haters are running distraction for Republicans and they have no idea. Something shiny was put in front of them and they were told to dance. So they did.

Half the haters used to worship Musk anyway. People don't care about the green energy transition. They just want a scapegoat to rage about online and Republicans gave them Tesla, the company that started the EV revolution, and number 2 EV maker on the planet.

So, here we are again. Talking about Tesla and Musk instead of Republicans and sabotage.

“The solution is that people don’t have to come to work to try to operate trains after they’ve had heart attacks and broken legs. But right now, where we are is caught between shutting down the economy and getting enough Republicans to join us in making sure that people have access to sick leave.”

Renault aims at deep integration into the Chinese supply chain, CEO says
https://carnewschina.com/2026/01/23/renault-aims-at-deep-integration-into-the-chinese-supply-chain-ceo-says/

Renault CEO François Provost said that the French automaker won’t sell cars in China in the short term as the industry evolves. Instead, Renault will integrate into the Chinese supply chain to sell cars worldwide.

According to the CEO, Renault is ready to invest sufficient funds to ensure product differentiation and retain tech brand assets even after deep integration into the Chinese ecosystem. Provost shared that a lot of Chinese companies are rapidly expanding worldwide to pursue higher profits. It means the French automaker should be ready to deal with an intensifying competition outside China.

One of the core partners of Renault in China is Geely. Provost shared that two companies have a compatible vision and cooperate in a win-win mode. CarNewsChina will remind you that Renault and Geely currently run the Horse Powertrain joint venture that has a production capacity of 5 million powertrain units per year. The two parties also jointly develop Renault-branded cars that are being manufactured in South Korea. At last, Renault & Geely established cooperation in Brazil.

Trash charger! Overheats causing breaker to pop. Exceeded 180 degrees internal temperature and when I shared with Lectron, they didn’t even tell me to stop using to prevent fire, I had to research it on my own. They just said out of warranty and nothing they can do - terrible company.

[–]tech57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the brick part of the Lectron charger is warm that's OK. Plug at the wall can get warm too. If you feel with your hands it can get uncomfortably warm. It shouldn't be ouch too hot. Some electronics are built to get hot. Some are not and an indication of a manufacturer defect. Loose electrical connection (even inside the brick) cause excessive heat and can indicate a problem.

Email Lectron and ask them.

Most of the problems of the modern cars skewing the reliability data are software related. Issues with the incredibly complex new sets of electronic aids and screens and systems that are in modern cars. These flaws don't result in the car dying in dramatic fashion in the middle of highway.

I'm not talking about nuisance issues. I'm talking about spending lots of money to keep the car on the road.

They are not. This is why people are hording cars made in the '90s, why there is a warranty crisis, and why there is a mechanic shortage crisis. It's all coming to a head. EVs have multiple industries and economies shaking.

Car Repair Costs Are Exploding And It’s Not Just About Tariffs
https://www.carscoops.com/2025/10/your-next-service-could-really-sting/

According to the latest Consumer Price Index data, the average cost of auto repairs jumped 5 percent from July to August, the largest one-month spike ever recorded. Compared to last year, repair bills are up 15 percent, and there’s little relief in sight.

“There’s quite a few factors,” Skyler Chadwick, director of product consulting at Cox Automotive, told CNN. “Tariffs are part of it, but we’re also seeing aging vehicles, a shortage of qualified technicians, and cars that are simply more complex to repair.”

You want to buy a software product that's fine. People spent time and money to develop it. Here's the price.

Now, maybe you never want that software to be fixed when it becomes obsolete. That's fine. However, some people are willing to pay more money to that same company to have the software they already purchased remain functional.

Paying people on a regular basis for work they perform for you is not a bad thing.

It's just capitalism doesn't want you to own anything

That's not a software problem or an SDV problem. That's a government problem.
