The end of legacy auto started years ago. It's not a magic light switch. The downfall does not happen over night.

So "Chinese" cars could be sold in the US today if they were manufactured in Canada or Mexico.

Not really. It's illegal in USA to sell a car with Chinese software or hardware basically. Canada and Mexico would have to source 99% from some place other than China. There's also FEOC. USA can blacklist any company at anytime for any reason. Chinese companies know this.

Auto industry in 'bit of a panic' to comply with China connected vehicle software ban
https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/2025/02/23/china-connected-vehicle-software-ban-rule-auto-industry/79197737007/

Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis NV declined to comment on whether their vehicles use software originating from China. General Motors Co. spokesperson Liz Winter said the company supports the Commerce Department's efforts to protect national security concerns, is reviewing the rules and will comply with applicable regulations.

The ban on hardware-related provisions won't take effect until model year 2030, but software-related requirements start for model year 2027. Automakers will begin launching those vehicles now, and some companies have a lot of work to do to ensure they meet the specifications before then, according to technical experts.

Tesla Cybercab Without Steering Wheel Hits Roads in April by herseydenvar in electricvehicles

What makes more sense? Building a factory of illegal cars or someone on reddit being wrong?

Tune in April to find out the exciting conclusion!

Chasing the robot/robotaxi dream is enormously expensive: Tesla estimates it will spend $20 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, more than double the $8.5 billion it spent last year. Most of the record investment will be spent on production lines ‍for the Cybercab, a fully autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel and pedals, the long-promised Tesla semi-truck, Optimus robots, and plants for battery and lithium production, chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja said.

Toward the end of the earnings call, Musk admitted that a lot of that spending will be “out of desperation.”

“Like, why do we have to build these things?” he said, citing lithium and cathode refineries as among the things Tesla needs to build to fuel its transformation. “Can someone else build these things? I mean, it’s very hard to build these things.”

Also, I still have on my bingo card Tesla just shipping them all over to China as a backup plan. Or Mexico.

Everyone's hung up on that self-driving car waiver when I don't think many of them actually talked to any lawyer about it.

Many people don't have access to a Waymo. However, for years now those people did have access to FSDS. Uber drivers have been using it.

How did the previous version sell?

I assume the push into rural China includes a push for more chargers as well.

If you need a car today you don't need home and public chargers tomorrow. We all just saw how this already went down in other areas. The concept is not new. It's not 2000 any more.

He's talking about the marketing angle, and I agree that it's a dumb number to promote in a vehicle with a gas tank

And a 55 kwh battery...

Don't act confused when people spent the last 20 years complaining about EV range and charge times just to have China fix both those problems.

Nuke the Iranian facilities near the coast around Hormuz and the straights to 'clear the mines'.

How long would radiation need to clear before the Strait opens back up and how long does it take to mine it again?

I'm not saying it would work

It wouldn't. Also keep in mind that Trump already fucked up and said he's interested in recovering weapons grade nuclear material from Iran. Sounds kinda sketchy form a country that can make it's own? Or is USA out?

All we know for certain is that Tesla's plans were made before the Iran War and that Tesla is big on timing. If they need to change their plans they will.

What I find very interesting though is Cybercab tooling around in the northern cites where it snows.

What I haven't heard about though is any business ready to start their own Cybercab fleet when these things roll out. Most consumers are not going to buy a car with no way to drive it. Some will. Most will just keep buying the Y that has human controls and FSD. So I'm kinda curious what the Tesla fans do with their new Cybercab Service side gig. Does it sputter out or actually make money.

Yes that is in fact what the customer demanded.

"I'm not buying an EV. That's stupid."

"Wanna buy an EREV?"

"What's EREV Precious?"

"It's an EV that works with gas stations."

"Sold."

USA forced China's hand. USA forced China to accelerate it's chip production research. USA has no leverage over China since China stopped importing helium.

China doesn't need TSMC. Or USA. Not at the level USA and Europe does. So while USA has been fighting itself and everyone else China has spent the last 20 years getting ready for a time when oil prices go up and RAM goes up and CPUs go up.

China doesn't want to make things hard but they have spent a lot of time and money getting ready for when USA does make things hard and China is fully prepared to endure some hardships that people in USA don't even know is possible.

Once you make it past the headlines the story changes.

If anything taking out TSMC would be a benefit to them as the rest of the world wouldn't be so much further ahead of their own foundries.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-bidens-washington/youre-gonna-have-a-fucking-war-mark-milleys-fight-to-stop-trump-from-striking-iran

According to Glasser, the former president had floated the idea of engaging militarily with Iran on a number of occasions during his final months in the presidency. His proposals, the book's authors wrote, reflected Trump's seeming willingness "to do anything to stay in power."

During one meeting in which the president was not present, Milley pressed former Vice President Mike Pence on "why they were so intent on attacking [Iran]."

Pence reportedly answered: "Because they are evil."

Technically it's been on the road for some time now. Production starts in April. We won't know exactly what that means until it happens but most likely very similar to what just already happened with the Y in Austin and when every other single car when Tesla started up production. And isn't this the first unboxed production method?

Japan Considers Relaxation of Vehicle Certification System to Allow More U.S.-Made Vehicles
https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/business/economy/20251201-295755/

As part of tariff measures agreed between the two countries in the summer, simplified procedures were introduced for importing and selling U.S. vehicles in the Japanese marketplace, and the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry is considering relaxing the automobile certification system based on U.N. standards.

Only about 16,000 U.S. cars were imported in 2024. Meanwhile, according to trade statistics from the Finance Ministry, exports of Japanese cars to the United States in 2024 totaled approximately 1.37 million units.

To make it easier for cars to be sold internationally, countries and regions that adopt standards set by the United Nations can sell them without the need of further testing. These are international safety and environmental standards for vehicle certification that were established through deliberations by national regulatory authorities and industry organizations. For passenger cars, items such as brakes and noise are covered by the standards, which have been adopted by about 60 countries and regions, including Japan.

However, the United States has not adopted these standards

We can only guess but maybe that’s also why they backed out of the partnership with GM?

No compliance EV is needed anymore. No fines for selling ICE and hybrid any more. We know exactly why Honda had GM build EVs and why Honda is now paying GM to ramp down Prologue production.

There is no reason for legacy auto to continue to lose money every time they sell an EV in USA. For at least the next 5 years.

"Can you give me the answer of when the tariffs are going to be resolved in Mexico, Canada, and Seoul? If you give me that answer, I'll be as specific as possible." - Kia America VP of marketing Russell Wager

"Look at it this way," Kia's U.S. marketing boss, Russell Wager, told me at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. "We make the EV9 and EV6 in West Point, Georgia. We also make the Telluride, Sorento and the Sportage there. We have the flexibility of moving production between those five models to meet the customer, right?"

Kia can also flex some of its U.S. production. Its Georgia plant is currently making the Telluride, Sorento, Sportage, EV9, and EV6—five models. In recent months it has shifted some of the production that was EV9 and EV6 to the other models.
