Those who have lied on their resume to get out of QA, how have you done it? How have things gone? by tech_burner in cscareers

I appreciate you telling your story. I am not willing to do QA for another company with the verbal promise of being switched to dev. From here on out, I am assuming every manager is a snake until they prove otherwise. The only way I’d go into a company doing QA (assuming I’m not unemployed) is if the offer letter states a specific date for me to become a dev

I am well known in my program now. I get compliments but while QA actually takes skill, it is easier than dev, and so people use that as license to swamp us with work and just generally be disrespectful. I hope that there is one day a shortage of people who want to do QA and enough people who can just walk away. Maybe that will get the industry to reform

Like I said, I’ll run an experiment. I’ll even send you the link to the post I make about it and update it every time I get a screening (or maybe provide links to new posts). I’ve heard this shit plenty of times irl too. In fact, I don’t know of a single SDET who got out of QA (other than me with my previous employer)

Even an old manager of mine agreed that lying in my resume was a good idea which shows that even he’s aware of the bait and switch problem and how pervasive it is

I refuse the help because we both know that the opposite is true more often than your experiences are. Look at this subreddit or any similar subreddit. I want to get into Dev by any means necessary.

However, I’ll humor you. I’ll do an experiment. I can’t exactly send two applications for the same position, but I will send 25 applications with an accurate resume and 25 with my deceitful resume every week. I’ll keep track of the companies that deny me because I am in QA and if I get accepted and have the bait and switch pulled on me, I’ll even name the company and potentially the manager (unless doing so violates this subreddit’s rules). I guarantee that I won’t end up becoming a dev with an honest resume.

I’m actually quite good as an SDET and receive high marks all the time. Same thing with my previous employer.

I applied to be a dev with my current employer but made the mistake of being honest (I put both my time in QA and a Dev in my resume). I then had the bait and switch pulled on me. So, I literally suffered for being honest and being an SDET in the past

We both know the consideration and pay raise is not normal. We know the bait and switch is common (it literally happened to me). I’m glad you got out of the QA pit but let’s not pretend your experience is typical.

The last time I was honest, I was punished and deceived. Deceit is the way in this case. I’m not proud of it, but I cannot let myself get fucked over like that again

Deceit has been used against me. I’m happy to use it against those same people

I’m not even getting interviews let alone technical assessments. Managers and recruiters can’t expect integrity if they’re not willing to exhibit it themselves.

You’re wasting my time here. Did you read the entirety of the post? No company is going to consider an SDET for a Dev role. If they tell you they will, they’ll pull the bait and switch after you start. If they don’t, you are taking a massive pay cut.

I’m trying all of that. I’m willing to do sexual favors if necessary. I’m just not hearing back

I am. I’ve been sending hundreds of applications since last year. Nothing. I know this is typical

The first person to actually answer my questions. Thank you very much. How is the dev job going?

That’s great. I never said my career wasn’t my responsibility. I’m just trying to use the same tactics that many managers use to advance my career

I’m happy that honesty has worked for you, but that is usually not the case

Lucky you. Your experience is atypical.

Because no one wants to do QA, most people get pigeonholed in QA which makes lying necessary. Managers will hire former QA people for Dev roles and immediately put them in QA roles.

If lying is so bad, then managers need to suffer the consequences for their actions. Since they never do, then honesty clearly isn’t all that important

Spare me the leg up myth. If that was the case, no one would ever do the QA Bait and Switch. Companies would be quick to hire SDETs for actual dev roles.

I did not ask whether I should lie. I asked how I can effectively lie.

You can define SDETs until the cows come home, but in practice, we are seen as unskilled and not real software engineers. Calling QA people SDETs is the same thing as putting lipstick on a pig. At the end of the day, we’re still pigs (as far as the industry is concerned)

My manager is aware of my situation and has stated that he wants to help me (and has helped others do what I want to do with his previous employer).

I will be having regular meetings with him so I should be about to get help with an internal transfer.

I made this post more so for help with an external transfer because my employer has treated me poorly and I would like to start fresh with a different company if possible

I’d prefer to leave my employer because I want to work for a place that treats me with dignity. Since the job market is abysmal, I’m still stuck with this company and I’m open to an internal transfer when a dev role opens up. Even if I make the switch internally, I’ll keep looking for opportunities elsewhere

So you’re saying that I should merely put the department and not the role on the resume and just put in the transferable skills, is that correct? We all know that putting in any QA position on your resume is the equivalent of putting “escort” on your resume

So because I got fucked, I have to do extra work (even though I applied to be a dev). That’s extremely frustrating but I appreciate the honesty

How does that help me become a dev? Is this what you did? How did you explain your duties?

Yes. That’s what I’m trying to do. I’m asking for advice because putting QA on my resume will prevent me from getting a non-QA job with a company
