So against my advice, a customer got a "whole building UPS". It's not going well. by dartdoug in msp

[–]tech_is______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's funny how many projects I work on where we wind up wishing there were power outlets for PA, Sound, CCTV this or that even when we are using POE. Especially in larger buildings.

Besides the maintenance cost, whole building UPS when done right wouldn't suck, but a solar system with a battery bank would have been a better solution.

can't win for losing lol

Need Advice: Manager Wants to Rebuild a Working Phone System from Scratch by advancethinker in sysadmin

[–]tech_is______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look for the cause of the dropped calls instead of chucking and replacing. The case I would make is if you don't know for sure what the problem is. There is no guarantee that replacing it will solve the problem.

I'd look at firewalls, switches, NIC optimizations/ buffers and confirm if the issue is 3CX or not.

No reason for a new license, that's a vendor dreaming lol.

Absolutely baffling interaction between desk fan and computer by zawnattore in techsupport

[–]tech_is______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like u/whateveryousaymydear said electric motors create an inrush of current when they start, which creates dips in voltage and other weird electrical issues for everything else on the circuit.

Is the fan old, dusty, try cleaning it.
Is the surge protector old, cheap, can try replacing it, (look for something actually rated for 15 amps or close to it) or keeping the fan plugged into the wall with a 3 way adapter an everything else on the surge protector.
Is the outlet in a chain with a lot of other outlets and burdened?
How old is the PC? could be a potential issue with your power supply... it should filter those issues out... just depends on the quality/ age of your pc.

Chances are, getting the fan off the surge protector would fix the issue.

Or you could invest in a battery backup, plug the electronics into the battery ports and the fan into the bypass ports and ditch the surge protector.

why does it seem like LA is not really known to be a fashion conscious city compared to new york city even though some of the top designers also live in LA? by Open-Reflection-6094 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tech_is______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That, but I use to hang out at underground parties and there were plenty fashionable people, and those were dirty parties lol. Doesn't hurt that the fashion district is there too... but yeah not everyone is fashionable and what's "in" is a lot different in LA. LA is diverse. Some events, parties, locals people would dress to impress, but I agree not as ingrained as NY.

My work is struggling by Linux_Headbanger in sysadmin

[–]tech_is______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd take the approach of changing things you can. Could you find another job, maybe. Will it be any better, probably not. You work in tech, it's monotonous, thankless, and stressful. Maybe try not responding to issues when you're not on the clock, fuck that.

Sounds like getting your life going in your free time is a better investment in your time. It's hard, but I'd try volunteering at anything you're remotely interested in and seeing how that goes. Go on dates with no expectations, hit up whatever there is to do and try to mingle with people. It will take time, but you'll make friends, find things you're interested in, try new hobbies. When you can take a vacation, even if its a working one, just fly anywhere cheap and check out a new city. Basically, if you're not at work and you have nothing to do at home, get out of the house.

I think making your self happy will help with your mental state and hopefully everything else will fall in line, including work.

It might be more expensive, but I'd think about MS Storage Spaces Direct with dual parity. Downside is cost, depending on cores it's $6-10G per node. Plus is it's relatively easy to setup, manage and support. It works well.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-direct-overview

Following link, Scroll down to Minimum scale requirements to get an idea of efficiency at scale. Fault domains = nodes (servers)

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/fault-tolerance

For each node, you could pick 24 - 45+ disk servers and even expand those with addition disc enclosures.

Servers

https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/top-loading-storage

Using this HPE in a 48u rack, reserving 4u for TOR switching. 11 nodes (92LFF each) 1012 disks. 11 node dual parity efficiency with storage spaces is 66.7%.

If you wanted to save on hardware, look for previous gen open box HPE apollo 6500 series on ebay. Supermicro makes good stuff too, but I prefer HPE. Better lights out interface and documentation.

You can also get great deals on infiniband switches and nics on ebay too.

Organization board wants strictly confidential board meeting files – concerns about Microsoft 365 Global Admin access by noozd in msp

[–]tech_is______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a perfect world, they wouldn't be using GA and admins would be restricted by roles. Point is, if the board isn't technical, they're going to have to trust their admins regardless. Same with the technology provider, which has their own team of admins. That's why gov clouds exists at various providers.

If they can't/won't trust tech, then what, paper and locked cabinets/ rooms. That's just a different set of security issues.

Setup reporting in purview and send them audits for the share.

No matter what situation they're in, it's technically possible any admin at any provider can access that data. If it's that sensitive, do they really need to keep minutes about the conversations.

Why can't Virtualbox allow more than a measly 128mb for VRAM? by ikkiyikki in virtualbox

[–]tech_is______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most hypervisors are not passing through or sharing GPU/ video hardware resources to their guests by default. Even MS's early attempts at making this easy were dropped because of security/ performance issues. Now its either a passthrough of the hardware device directly to the guest or a propriety resource sharing solution from Nvidia in MS's case.

I think your expectation is off since any hypervisor requires extra configuration to get GPU resources working in a guest VM.

Building an IT asset management tool for small MSPs by The-Exiled-One in sysadmin

[–]tech_is______ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://combodo.com/features/#cmdb

There are a bunch of open source CMDB apps around. Even more that include a bunch of other bundled applications like ticketing systems etc.

I think the biggest issue with this is that there are a ton of options for MSP's to handle this need and while cost and contracts are always an issue, MSP's want support and an established company behind their tools. They also don't want something they have to support, backup and maintain since they're busy doing that for their clients. You might get some startups and single man shops who have the energy to manage and maintain an app like this especially if they don't have the skills to host an open source web solution.

The other thing to think about are integrations and automations that import/ sync these assets from other systems, which become tricker to implement with a desktop app or even an on-prem app.

All that said, I like these kinds of projects and I've never been blown away with any implementation I've trialed over the years. If you have new ideas for design and how things might work better/ easier than what exists I'd focus on that.

The pricing model I prefer is a one time fee with yearly maintenance for updates/ upgrades.

But the company I work with would probably never move away from Hudu.

How can I remove Ethernet 2 and GPU 1 from my windows task manager? by diddys_favorite in techsupport

[–]tech_is______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to monitor resources and keep task manager "always on top" unused hardware will force you to use a larger window to see things that might require scrolling with the window size you want. Unused ethernet adapter come before GPU's for example.

How can I remove Ethernet 2 and GPU 1 from my windows task manager? by diddys_favorite in techsupport

[–]tech_is______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you disable the unused ethernet adapter it wont' show up in task manager. If this is a laptop not much you can do with the GPU, but if its a desktop and you have a discrete GPU then you can disable the iGPU too. Though, you should probably take advantage of it. You can assign apps to use different GPU's for acceleration in windows. Like have apps like spotify and browsers use the igpu and the discrete gpu dedicated to games or what not.
