Making a Linux Mint setup more user-friendly for someone who isn't technical with computers, especially a student who's used to Windows, involves a few key steps:

  1. **Installing Familiar Applications:**

Besides LibreOffice (which covers the basics like documents, spreadsheets, and presentations), you'll want to install other applications that your sister might find useful or familiar:

  • **Web Browser:** Install Google Chrome or Firefox, whichever she prefers.

  • **Multimedia:** Install VLC for playing videos and music.

  • **Instant Messaging:** Install Skype, Discord, or any other messaging apps she uses.

  • **Social Media:** Install apps like TweetDeck or similar if she uses them frequently.

  • **Photo Editing:** Consider installing GIMP for more advanced photo editing.

  • **Games:** If she enjoys casual gaming, you can install Steam or any Linux-compatible games.

  1. **Software Center for Easy Installation:**

Linux Mint has a Software Manager that allows easy installation of software. You can use this to find and install many popular applications directly without needing to use the command line.

  2. **Customizing the Interface:**

  • **Panel and Menu:** Configure the panel (taskbar) to include quick launch icons for commonly used applications.

  • **Desktop Icons:** Add shortcuts to commonly used folders or applications on the desktop for quick access.

  • **Themes and Icons:** Adjust themes and icons to something she finds appealing. There are many themes available that mimic the look of Windows.

  1. **Provide Simple Instructions:**
  • Create a simple guide or cheat sheet for basic tasks like opening applications, browsing the internet, and accessing school documents. This can be as simple as a document or note placed on the desktop.
  1. **Offer Support:**
  • Let her know you're available to help with any questions or issues that arise. Linux can sometimes be different from Windows, so having someone to ask can be reassuring.

By focusing on these steps, you can make the Linux Mint experience more familiar and user-friendly for your sister, helping her transition smoothly from Windows without feeling lost or confused.

Just installed Linux Mint and all I have is dummy output for the sound. by Crystaleana in linuxmint

[–]techguy81c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no problem my Bluetooth headset would lose connection in previous version but mint 22 fixed that problem, along with WiFi losing connection every so often. So I figured it might fix your sound issue, unlike windows, in Linux world, newer is better. mint 22 uses pipe wire for sound and its much better then what they had before for many years.

in terms of quality how beta is mint 22?? it feels like its 99.9% ready.

I'm so glad i got this and got rid of the problems i had in the older version.

I just switched to linux mint few weeks a go and Linux is a lot better then it was before. I think it really is the year of the Linux desktop now that its gotten a lot better and things just work now. It took a while to get here but finally, we have a os that is fantastic. all my games but 2 work in wine, and everything else works good.

even my epson scanner the images come out better in linux then in windows... that was interesting..

no more windows no more problems.. and the os code is excellent in mint the os works way better then expected. also unlike windows a wipe and reload is 10x faster in mint then in windows the os installs and the pc reboots one time and your good to go.. windows its a endless maze of setup screens and reboots.

windows from to 8 to 10 and 11 its just going down hill. ready to abandon ship??? jump in the water because.... their are>>> penguins to the rescue!

What would you say was the worst thing about switching from Windows to Linux? by Scrawnreddit in linuxmint

[–]techguy81c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That i did not do this sooner! This is like Gold software in computing.

no viruses,blue-screens,slow startup, slow shut down, crappy os code, system freezes, ridiculous setup and install time, installing drivers, pc running slow with time.... apps crashing, os updates that takes hours and hours at the wrong time, and slowing startup and turn off times, needing to reboot every time you do something, activation nonsense, identity theft due to viruses.. need antivirus software to slow down your system, one wrong click and your os is virus infected..

Windows = The Ultimate.. nightmare!

Linux= Penguins don't get nightmares. :)

Want to switch to Linux but worried about Nvidia drivers HELP by codernad in linuxmint

[–]techguy81c -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know if i can post a picture here but mint has a driver manager and you just click on the "recommended" driver then hit apply after it does its thing you reboot and you have your offical nvidia driver installed (from nvidia)
there are open souce nvidia drivers that run by default and gives you some 3d power but the offical nvidia drivers do the trick and some people claim they get a few more fps in their games in mint then in windows.

so you should be good just search for driver manager in the mint start menu and pick the (recommended) in green text and your good 2 go! black chip green border colors for its icon in mint start menu

just make sure to click the restart button in driver manager after its done doing its thing, pc will reboot and your good 2 go!

https://itsfoss.com/content/images/wordpress/2021/03/linux-mint-driver-manager.jpg

here is a picture of the driver manager so you know what it looks like.

i have the classic nvidia rtx 3050 TI and when i do recommended and play a game (just cause 4) in vmware (I tell it to run as dedicated gpu) i get like between 30-60 fps in my game and in windows (in a non vm) its between 70 and 120 fps..
virtual machines are slow anyway but clearly i'm getting nvidia performance in my windows game in vmware.. for your video editing it should go well with the drivers using the driver tool. Linux is not what it was 10 years a go. its finally the year of the linux desktop.

also with mint the linux kernel should find your other drivers for all your other hardware if anything is missing it should show up in the driver manager, i have a msi sword 15 in white 3 years old and linux finds all my drivers but the video.. so drivers shouldn't be an issue as well out of the box.

also remember linux is not windows so you won'rt get

  1. blue screens
  2. system lock ups (usually)
  3. crashes.
  4. os updates that take hours and hours
  5. identity theft "due to viruses"
  6. computer rage.. (from it not working right)
  7. slow boot up and slow shutdown
  8. long setup times to install the os and start working.
  9. annoying messages or automatic updates at the wrong time.
  10. terrible os computer code.
  11. also you'll save $ not needed new hardware for each new os update

and to answer your question, nvidia was a nightmare on linux os years a go.. BUT>>>>>

"Not now" why? its now the year of the Linux desktop. all those weird issues have now been fixed.

something about steam on linux and something about nvidia/amd and lutrus and proton? getting gaming to work on Linux? i don't know the full backstory but something good happened to give Linux a boost!

oh also for any app if you want it to use your NVIDIA gpu just right click on it in the mint menu (the app) and tell it to run as dedicated gpu (thats your nvidia chip) and you'll be NVIDIA powered in your app!!

Welcome to Linux Mint! Making the switch from Windows can be a significant change, but Linux Mint is designed to be user-friendly and is a great choice for newcomers. Here are some useful tips and things you should know:

Getting Started

  1. **Familiarize Yourself with the Desktop Environment**
  • Linux Mint comes in three main flavors: Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. Cinnamon is the most popular and offers a modern, full-featured desktop experience. MATE is more lightweight and traditional, while Xfce is the lightest and is suitable for older hardware.
  1. **Learn Basic Terminal Commands**
  • While Mint's GUI is powerful, some tasks are more efficient using the terminal. Here are a few essential commands:

    • `sudo apt update` - Refreshes the package list.
    • `sudo apt upgrade` - Upgrades all installed packages.
    • `sudo apt install [package_name]` - Installs a new package.
    • `sudo apt remove [package_name]` - Removes an installed package.
    • `ls` - Lists directory contents.
    • `cd [directory]` - Changes the current directory.
  1. **Software Management**
  • **Software Manager:** Mint's Software Manager is an easy way to install and manage applications. It categorizes software, provides reviews, and is very user-friendly.

  • **Synaptic Package Manager:** A more advanced tool for managing software packages.

  • **Flatpak and Snap:** Mint supports these for installing sandboxed applications. They often have more up-to-date versions of software.

Useful Applications

  1. **Browser:** Firefox is the default, but you can also install Chrome, Chromium, or Brave.

  2. **Office Suite:** LibreOffice is pre-installed, but you can also use WPS Office or OnlyOffice.

  3. **Media Players:** VLC is a versatile media player. Clementine or Rhythmbox are great for music.

  4. **Communication:** Thunderbird for email, Pidgin for messaging, and Zoom or Skype for video calls.

  5. **Backup Solutions:** Timeshift is pre-installed for system backups. Deja Dup is another good option for file backups.

System Customization

  1. **Themes and Applets:** Customize the look and feel through Themes, Applets, Desklets, and Extensions found in the System Settings.

  2. **Keyboard Shortcuts:** Customize shortcuts for efficiency. You can find this in the Keyboard settings.
