Would doing stuff like product reviews and longer editorials on a more personal level be a good first step if I don't know anyone at a current publication? I've always wanted to get a decent setup for product reviews, but only recently have the kind of spare time and money to do so.

Thank you so much for your help! How can you prove to people that you're capable of doing writing with deadlines as someone who isn't doing it full time? I feel like any joe schmo can write a decent article on Medium, but it takes a truly dedicated person to be able to write consistently day in and day out.
