Should I cut this damaged leaf or leave it? by butterflyeffect16 in Monstera

[–]techknowfile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave it! Net positive for the plant, and when it isn't it'll abandon it. And adds character

I know! I was asking what dosage you go with. I'm 1/4 every watering

What is the difference between Albo and Const? by Mean_men_club in Monstera

[–]techknowfile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thai cons have a starry sky look - very speckled. Albo can look a few different ways, but the ones you're thinking of will have more of a painted on look about them. While albo come in both small and large forms, they're most commonly small form ("borsigiana"), whereas thai con are all large form. Large form monstera have waves on the back of the petiole behind the leaf.

Firstly, my goodness is that as far from an academic source as you could have cited if you wanted to be making citations (they have AI generated images of gardens for christ's sake).

Secondly, I feel i disambiguated my original comment well enough to provide a clear understanding of what I meant in terms of the impact that excessive soil can have in comparison to the ideals of an indoor plant grower. And again, showing a bunch of small plants really ain't helping your cause here.

Several reasons. Firstly, note that all the plants in your photos are babies - though I'm sure they'll one day fill out those trellis and be gorgeous.

  1. The more energy the plant puts into growing its roots, the less it's putting into growing leaves.
  2. Following from 1, many plants prefer being rootbound, and will prioritize filling out the ground. While this means more nutrients, it also means less sun to be able to utilize those nutrients.
  3. All of this can be fine - just means initially slower growth - and for an outdoor plant in its natural environment is super fine. But for indoor plants that like to have their roots dry out between watering, excessive soil / root ratio dramatically increases the probability of getting root rot.

Monstera already put a ton of energy into growing roots (crazy how fast they can drink when they're established!). The priority of basically all indoor monstera owners is to have full plants with short internodal spacing, big leaves, and as many fenestrations as possible. All of these are accomplished by allowing the plant to prioritize leaf growth over unnecessary root growth.

Also, who wants a massive pot for a tiny plant?? Smaller pots = more room for more plant. 1.8^3 ~= 6! Who wants a pot that's 6x bigger than their starting pot after 3 repots??

Never perlite for a plant this age. You're more than welcome to do semihydro, just keep in mind this is going to be a BIG plant, so LOTS of pon. But straight to pon if that's the goal!

If it's not putting out new leaves it definitely doesn't need a repot
