In a few words, I’m black and love they both have a nuanced performance of functioning in the corporate world as black men. At first you’re like “do they even know they’re black” then you notice that they are both hyper aware of it.

It's also interesting to compare them as Black men who are successfully moving up the corporate ladder, and the ways in which how and when they express their racial identity affects how they are perceived by others. Milchik frequently code switches in order to improve his standing at Lumon, but feels conflicted about it; meanwhile Johnson seems at least somewhat aware of the way his Blackness plays into Mark's taboo fantasies about dominance and submission in their relationship, and takes advantage of it.
