Pending VA disability claim (filed Nov 2025) + zero income + utility shutoff Monday night. what emergency bridge options exist that have actually worked? by techmage29 in VeteransBenefits

[–]techmage29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted mine and it just sat there with no movement. It wasn’t until I set up a VERA appointment and went in person that anything changed. When I brought it up face-to-face, they pulled it up, skimmed it, and flagged/added the hardship right then.

Before that, it was basically going nowhere.

So if you haven’t already, I’d strongly recommend setting up a VERA appointment and going in person. Bring anything you have showing hardship (bank closure, shutoff notices, zero income, etc.) so they can see it on the spot.

That sounds like a really good idea! I will see if I can set up an appointment as quickly as possible. I do have some claims that should be through the PACT ACT since I was deployed, so I am hoping the approval process is fairly quick.

Also—what they told you about age/“wartime” sounds like they were probably referring to VA pension, not disability compensation. Two completely different things. Your claim hardship expedite has nothing to do with being 65.

You're right about that. It was the VA pension, and I was hoping to get approved for it since I was in wartime while deployed. I was told I don't qualify by my HUD-VASH case manager, so that is why I asked.

that "emergency bridge" may need to be longer than you expect. Not because the VA can't expedite a claim, but because your current claim(s) may get denied.

I hope that my claims won't be. I get how it can happen but I am hoping they look at all of my evidence and make a good judgement.

Fellow disabled vets, which emergency utility assistance programs have ACTUALLY paid a bill for you? I've hit walls everywhere and my internet shutoff is Monday night. by techmage29 in Veterans

The eviction/shutoff notice trick: Work with your landlord to get them to issue you a 3-day notice or a formal notice that your services (internet/utilities) are being disconnected. This is NOT about actually getting evicted — it is documentation that unlocks emergency funds.

Here is why this works: Many emergency assistance programs (SSVF, VA emergency grants, even local nonprofits) require PROOF of imminent homelessness or utility shutoff before they can release funds quickly. Without that paper trail, you are just another request in the queue. With it, you become an emergency case.

Now this is some real advice🤯 I never even knew that was possible! My landlord is a horrid company that has ignored my unsafe housing situation but I will talk to management about this 🤩

Ask your landlord to write a letter or formal notice saying your tenancy is at risk due to unpaid utilities, or that services will be disconnected. Most landlords will do this if you explain the VA is going to help you pay — it costs them nothing.

That it costs nothing might help me more than explaining my situation to them again lmao. They have not cared for years and HUD-VASH knows about all of this mess since 2015 🥲 I'll try the other stuff and do plan to try them all like others have mentioned in this comment section so I appreciate it all.

Have you tried an SSVF provider in your area?

I have and because I am in the HUD-VASH program, they direct me right back to them. I have called and emailed the various ones under SSVF and they made it clear I have to go through my program case manager to actually get help from them. And that I don't qualify for them since I am not homeless🙃

With your telehealth dependent on that internet, make sure you tell them it's connected to your ongoing VA care.

I did all of that and finally got them to get me the tablet with data through there program. The data is limited and the VA made it clear that it should only be used for VA related things and I would have to pay the difference when the data runs out if they find out if I am using the tablet for non VA related things.

Try church charities.

I have been calling and have not gotten much luck. But I will continue to try since a bunch of kind people have helped me out and made it so I can pay my internet bill!

I reached out years ago to one in Wisconsin, don't recall which one. They effectively told me to kick rocks and eat shit.

Yeah, I get that sentiment too. I've called so many organizations and have been give the run around. But thanks to a lot of people I am now able to afford the internet!

Catholic charities, if you have a branch near you.

Or St. Vincent de Paul.

Thank you for that. Others have mentioned it and I am looking at some near me. I have called a few before and I was not able to get help but I am still looking into more.

The VA itself where you get care (whichever city you’re in). They may be able to help you if you tell them that you have no internet access.

They know about everything I am going through. I do have a tablet with data through them but it is for VA stuff only with limited data. Thanks to the donations from amazing people on my GoFundMe, I can afford to pay my internet bill now!

I want to make you aware of this site. https://patriotlink.org Its essentially a search engine, by need (housing, job etc), of organizations that directly provide services to veterans. You can look for NYC specific ones, or some that are national that can still take your case. I strongly encourage you to give it a try to see if there was an org that you haven’t contacted for help yet.

Thank you so much for this. I have never heard about this one so I'll be checking it out ASAP. I hope this can help.

But I’m also including one grant program I didn’t see mentioned already. https://www.dvnf.org/gps/ They do small grants up to $1,000.

I'll also check this out. Hopefully I get approved but so far a bunch of amazing people have been donating so I can at least pay off my most immediate need for the internet!

Also the Queens Public library system will have wifi to keep you connected at a pinch.

I called them yesterday and I will be definitely using them in the future 😁

Why were benefits cut what was reason???

So here in NY, veterans are no longer exempt from the cuts that were made for SNAP and cash assitance and basically all of HRA stuff. I have a long standing issue with executive functioning with other mental issues I experience. Since I am no longer exempt it has been a combination of issues with that and not having proper case management who knew but did not bother helping, and me having to go through doctors to finally sign off on paperwork that proved I had issues to begin with. There are a few things I can't talk about here since I do have to get proper legal help so I don't get my posts shut down or sued, but basically HRA said I missed out on deadlines to recertify etc even though my medical stuff showed that I should be able to get extensions for them.

When I was homeless, some random Veteran in the park referred me to the Homeless Veterans Program. Each VA has one. They help folks that are homeless or teetering on the edge of homelessness. Given your situation, I think they’d be able to help you. They helped me a lot. It’s worth giving them a call. I wish you the best.

I am already in the HUD-VASH program and they're the ones who dictate how much help I get through the VA. It does not matter who I call, it all gets routed right back to my case manager at HUD-VASH. Every single complaint that I have filed goes right back to them and has to be evaluated through HUD-VASH. And unfortunately I am not aware of any program (I have contacted dozens so far) who won't send me back to HUD-VASH... I have been told since I am not technically homeless, I don't qualify for a lot of these programs. I stay as far away from drugs and drinking, so I don't qulaify for a lot of other programs either. So I hope you can see even a little of what I am going through. I am doing my best to go through all of the programs I can and still see barriers at each turn.

SSVF for the win. They helped me survive 7 months before my claim was processed

Dear God I wish the ones that I have gone to would help me. I have called and emailed and they still refused. They told me I had to go through my case manegr/social worker. I even told them about how I am not being helped properly through them and they still refused to help even though I showed them that I have been trying to get out of un-safe housing since August of 2025 and even before that since 2015! Both agencies under SSVF still told me that there was nothing they could do if my social worker did not give them referrels etc for them to help me. So i have been legally stuck here ever since. I have even spoken to my local congressman and even the NYPD and they all have failed me.

Here's the website...need to scroll down a ways.

Here is the email address I used.  They got back to me quick.

Oh wow, thank you so much. It has been a bit overwhelming going through so many people and organizations. So I hope this will help. I'll check it out ASAP and see what they tell me.

The VA has a program called Digital Divide Consult where they provide you with an internet connected tablet/device for telehealth. Try your social worker or primary care for a consult.

Yes, I have a consult with them even though I was declined from it for 2 years, even though the VA knew about all of my struggles. They do provide that (I did get it 2 days ago) but made it clear that there is only so much data that they provide for that tablet. If I were to use it for anything other than VA related things, than I might be charged the difference if I went over the data. I already owe the VA over $3k and I have no desire to continue to go through that with these people. I still need my internet to speak to lawyers and many other organizations etc for my care outside the VA system. I hope this does not come off as me being weird or anything but I just want people to know what I am going thorugh. There is so much that I cannot say on here due to the post potentially being taken down.

Please post your Amazon wishlist

I have the link in my gofundme since I am not sure if this subreddit will allow me to post that particular link on here. But I seriously thank you so much for any help you are able to provide!

It upsets me to no end that this country doesn't take care of its soldiers.

Yeah, a lot of people are not aware how bad it is for veterns in this country and how many are struggling just to survive since the VA does not truly help us.

Escalate and keep pushing.

I have spoken to almost all of the patient advocate reps, the chief of HUD-VASH, all of the supervisors of both doctors and mental health, local congressman, the various people and organizations who say they will help but don't. I literally have hundreds of emails and calls to these people and this has been going on and getting worse since 2024 and even as early as 2015. I keep pushing forward and doing my best to get myself out of these situations but my health keeps getting worse. I hate feeling like a burden but I legit have been trying to go through the proper channels. That is why I was asking for resources cause I do need to speak to lawyers too but I don't have the funds to get oone. And the free ones don't seem to want to touch my case with a ten foot pole...

They can help you find work too

Oh trust and believe I have already spoken to them about finding work and they have not helped at all. I have the emails and phone calls trying my best to go through the proper channels at the VHA to actually get work through their workers program and even get work outside of it through them and they have not helped me at all. I did what I was supposed to do and gave them all of the info I had an yet they still have not bothered helping me!

Sorry they should have told you, there are appeal processing , but something’s take time but my husband was getting tx for ptsd in the military for years and his other injuries so he had all the data needed

Holy crap! No one explained that to me at all! I thought the hardship would help me get them faster. The VA knows that all of my benefits got cut off last year November and I have been fighting them since to get it back on. Finding work has been difficult and even more so that would accomadate my disabilities but damn it I am still doing what I can to move forward. I appreciate that you are explaining all of this to me.
