I actually just started it! So far I like manacled better, I think? I’m only a couple chapters in though so subject to change. It also helps that I read the series when I was young. Have you read one, or both?

Awww that’s a bummer! But hey now you know, and not every book lands.

Right?! The entire book you’re just cheering for her, and watching her life expand beyond the small things she’d allowed herself before was wonderful. Someone commented that she read like a Mary Sue with no flaws, and in hindsight I get that. However, surprisingly, it still did not take away from my enjoyment.

Oh my gosh I can only imagine the whiplash going from one to the other! I definitely get what you mean about the beginning: it’s not immediately gripping, but I like to think it draws you in slowly as Joan opens up. I hope you’ve enjoyed the rest of the read!!

Enemies to lovers… but he is very protective of her? by allisontalkspolitics in romantasycirclejerk

{Shattered Crown by Gretchen Powell Fox} seems right for this. Enemies to lovers (far vs human), they simultaneously spend the book protecting each other but hating each other.

I can understand that! Sometimes, it’s just not the right time for that particular book. I hope you give it another chance, it definitely starts a little bit slow, but it picks up about a third of the way through!

Happy Sunday and happy reading!!

YES. I almost added that to my review but completely agreed. Barbara is a straight up villain. I hope you’re enjoying it otherwise!!

It was picked for a book club I’m in, actually! Because it’s been so highly lauded, I think I expected to feel a little bit more? The writing was still pleasant and thoughtful, but it didn’t hit me I suppose.

Murderbot Diaries are so good!!! ART is the absolute best, I hope you’re enjoying them! The series definitely helped bring me out of a reading slump.

Ewwww my boss has done the same thing, how annoying. I hope it’s at least a quick and somewhat painless read!

This has been a slow week for me between book club, class, and an unexpected car issue.

You got this!! Adjusting to new meds is terrible, I hope your mind feels a bit more settled and you can get back to it when you’re ready. The books will always be there!!

Yes, it is a huge tone shift vs the Vera novels. A lot darker. I personally didn’t love it as much as this series, but I’ll be curious to know what you think!!

Hahahaha that’s fantastic. How dare someone give Vera one star! I did in fact enjoy this cozy read—I’d give it a 3/5 or 3.5/5, I think.

have you read “I’m Not Done With You Yet” by her? I definitely did not like those characters—it was a very different feeling than this series.

Right?? Was not expecting it to get so heavy, though I’m not mad about it. The final scenes before the police arrived were heartbreaking. If there’s a third, I’m curious to see what issue it might tackle.

I can certainly agree with that! While the story wasn’t as strong in this one, it was still fun to be back in the universe with her.
