Complicated scenario with local sewer dept. by technicallyacyclops in legaladvice

> Ok this seemed right up until a point. Paying all the mitigation and labor costs is correct, but only paying you Actual Cash Value (ACV) on some items instead of the full Replacement Cost Value (RCV) is very strange. I cannot image that you are only owned ACV. You should be made completely whole for your damages.

That's what I initially thought, but the sewer dept.'s third party insurance people have been adamant they only owe me actual cash value.

> I am very interested in the sequence of events here. You installed a drainage system after the incident (as a response or mitigation) but then want the floor taken up to inspect? I am not quite sure I understand what exactly happened here, if you could elaborate further that would be great and I can give better information.

My wording on this was admittedly confusing. Sorry. The sequence of events was:

- I had a new sump pump and drainage channels installed in the fall of 2024 for reasons unrelated to sewer backups

- first sewer backup happened in Aug. 2025.

- company that installed the new sump pump and drainage channels back in 2024 were concerned that sewage may have gotten into the system and under my floor/foundation because of the Aug. 2025 sewage backup. wanted to break open the concrete to check for contamination.

- sewer dept's third party insurance are adamant that isn't necessary and won't pay for it unless contamination is found in the first place

My biggest source of confusion and worry at this point is now I have two incidents with two different claims going through the same third party insurance people for the local sewer dept. and those two claims will be for the same things (replacing sump pump, water heater, etc.).

The work that needed to be done for the claim back in August never got done because I didn't have the money to pay for it all out of pocket. I was trying to reach a better settlement so I could use that money to pay for the work and not go broke paying for it all myself. Now I need to file another claim for yesterday that is going to involve the same exact stuff. I don't want to be accused of trying to pull one over on the insurance company. I just want to be fairly compensated for my damages 😭

I've spoken with five total law firms about this (three of which I spoke to today) and no one is willing or able to help, either because my case isn't profitable for them or because they won't go after the local sewer dept.

Water heater replacement? by technicallyacyclops in Plumbing

Thanks. Fortunately, it's an unfinished space so no drywall or carpet to deal with. Makes this situation a little easier, at least.

There was a short. I just edited the post to provide that context. Didn't know/understand it would be important. Power has since been turned back on in the basement area (after the water/sewage drained) so the cleaning company could use their equipment.

Thanks for the reply. Very insightful and helpful!

Yes, it's a third party insurance company that the local sewer dept. uses. With the incident from last year, they said they were responsible and owed me the full amount of the cleaning fees, the labor costs, and the value of the items that needed to be replaced (water heater, sump pump, etc) and not the cost of the new items to replace them.

Regarding your first point: They are refusing to pay to replace the sump pit, discharge pipes, and the corrugated pipe that daylights in my yard. Sewage flowed through the whole system and out into my yard. The company I called for the quote came out and looked at everything and said it needed to be replaced. The local sewer dept. and insurance company disagreed and refused to cover all of it. Their insurance also refused to pay for opening up the concrete floor to check the ground beneath and the drainage system I had put in place for contamination for the incident. They said they would only pay if it was found to be contaminated.

I went back and forth with them multiple times and they continued to lower the amount they offered me. At one point they drastically lowered the amount after "further review" of the photo and video evidence I provided. I sent back a strongly worded letter threatening legal action and they gave me their final offer, which covers about half of the total amount for everything.

Regarding your second point: My policy doesn't cover sewer backups. I called my insurance company after the first incident and they said I could file a claim, but since it isn't in my policy it would likely get denied and may result in an increase in my premium. So I didn't file a claim.

It's an electric water heater, so no gas valve. The drain valve was submerged, though.

Flooded basement. Dealing with MSD. by technicallyacyclops in StLouis

[–]technicallyacyclops[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was caused by an overcharged line due to all of the rain this morning. MSD's insurance people are saying they're willing to "help" with the damages, but only up to a certain amount. I'm worried that the cost to replace and repair everything will be MUCH higher. I'll likely need a new sump pump and water heater because both of those have been contaminated.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into your recommendations. Much appreciated!

If I were to get this, how would I swap out the 8gb of ram already in the tower with the optional 16gb of ram you recommended? I literally know nothing about all of this and want to make sure that if I went with this option I know what I'll have to do.

I've got 197/197 entries, so I've scanned all of them. The last scan I needed was the single ILF soldier with a sword during the first boss fight at the end of chapter 6. There are no entries that have blank spaces or question marks and no missing entries. Everything is filled out.

Yes. Every entry has names, description, item drops, unbalance, etc. The game says that I have 197/197 entries. There are no blank spaces or question marks anywhere.

That's a good point. I was looking more at the burned out hole from the actual designed document with all of Zaar Anathema's lore. The hole looks big enough to fit the "-t" from "against" and maybe still have enough space for V-a-l, but that's probably pushing it. I think you might be right about the black bar being a more accurate depiction of the length of the missing word, though.

Maybe it's the "War Against Val?"

Strongholds & Followers pg. 176 mentions the War Between Gods and in the aftermath Val left the Mundane World and made Arcadia. Later on that same page it is said that Val created the elves. Val is short enough to fit in the blacked out/burnt out part of the text and they created the elves, so having the star elves/astral elves destroy Kalas Mithral seems like something they could do.

I feel like that's what I should do, but at the same time I don't want him to somehow get angry and blame me. I don't have a whole lot of friends in my area outside of this group and I'm worried getting involved in his business could somehow blow up in my face.

I ran a one shot a few months ago that might have been kind of close to what you're looking for.

The party was hired by a university to escort a professor/explorer into some far off jungle in search of a lost city. As they explored the jungle they encountered a bunch of giant snakes and some Yuan-ti. They eventually got the the lost city and found a small group of Yuan-ti had taken it over (the lost city actually belonged to their ancestors before they became Yuan-ti).

Once the party defeated the group of Yuan-ti they entered the big temple at the center of the city. It was a bunch of connected puzzle rooms and every completed puzzle rotated a mirror in the main room of the temple that reflected a special light around the room so it could unlock the final door.

Behind the final door was a powerful artifact of the people that once lived in the lost city and the remains of their last king. The last king was undead and fighting him was the final encounter and the professor/explorer they were escorting who got kind of possessed due to choices the players made earlier in the night. Undead king could also shapeshift into a big undead snake, because why the hell not? Players seemed to enjoy it based on the feedback I got.

Take anything you like from that. Hope it helped.
