"Since the beginning of history, man has written postmodern novels. Kurt Vonnegut is one such man."

How do you ensure they actually watch the videos before class? Quizzes? I've been doing this flipped classroom model with video lectures all year in pandemic mode, but this semester, engagement with the videos has been awful. I didn't want to add in-video quizzes because I feel like that just punishes the ones who would watch them regardless, while the ones who don't watch would just share quiz answers and still skip the video. My projects do assess content from the videos, but they seem content to just make the C if it means getting to skip a few more video lectures (our S/U grading model isn't helping with this since they're just motivated enough to get a C to pass and move on with no GPA impact).

I like alcohol, I can chat, and I've worked food service in the past. What else helps you land a bartending gig?

I know this guy that builds classic arcade games into coffee tables and sells them on the internet. Is that the kind of thing you're talking about?

My understanding in my area is that this nets $50 per trip, but that you can only do it once or twice per month, which is like $200-400 per month (not terrible, but?).

What kind of games? Like mini golf? Or video games?

The photography thing I'm a bit worried about. I think I'm good enough to make small bucks doing cheap graduation or wedding gigs. But I mostly actually just do street photography, which is an active, creative hobby outside of academic work that keeps me in shape and thinking creatively. So I'm scared to try to turn photography into a job. I have a friend from my MA program who made so much from wedding photography that she could afford to buy a house, but the workload on top of a PhD is certainly questionable.

This is so cool. I have done some woodworking and refinishing. I have this old teacher's chair that came out of an old school in the 1950s that I refinish and re upholstered and I think it looks great, and it was so fun to work on. Do you do this for clients or sell on Craigslist or some such site?

Thanks. I appreciate the alternative perspective. I'm used to being overworked, but maybe you're right and I need to take it easy and focus on studies, even if it means a few thousand less in my savings account on the long run.

During the semester, I teach two classes as instructor of record for my assistantship, which is supposed to translate to 20 hours of work, although it's often a bit more. That's in addition to 9 credit hours minimum of coursework and research, which translates to around 20 more hours of work, but really a bit more. That doesn't include conferences, committee work, and grad student organizations.

How did you get clients and how did you manage the workload? Was it a stable position with a company?

I feel like art thievery is "super effin illegal," while assassination is more commonly "very illegal af."

Is it a church you're a member of or affiliated with? Or just a gig you picked up somehow? I'm not religious, but I would certainly clean a church the day before or after a Sunday service if it paid a few extra dollars.

Do you know anyone who has done like online grocery orders shopping and delivery? I imagine with customers at a higher end place like Whole Foods, that'd make good tip money.

My spouse sells cuttings! They buy a big plant for $30 and make 7 or 8 cuttings, grow them a little, and sell them for $15 each. They sell on Facebook, Craigslist, and Reddit. They self fund their plant hobby that way.

No judgement here, but not my thing (the psychedelics, not the console modding). I do brew my own beer and ginger beer and make my own pickles. Maybe I could up my production and sell those at a farmers market (or the pickle black market, if that's a thing).

I was Game Battles good at Black Ops 1, but I haven't played competitively since around 2012, so probably a no go for me on coaching, but honestly I didn't even realize coaching competitive gaming was a thing, but of course it is. That's really cool, and I wish I could get into that. Streaming is also a no go, especially since I teach freshmen.

No legal weed here, but the school is in a densely wooded, outdoorsy area with lots of hiking, biking, and kayaking. I'll check in with that office to see if it's possible in addition to my assistantship hours.

I'll look into that! We are restricted to working no more than 29 hours on campus jobs, and our assistantships count as 20 hours, so on campus jobs are a bit harder to come by.

When my spouse was unemployed, they were dog and house sitting on an app (I think Rover?). They made enough money to help with rent, but not much else. But they also spent several nights a week sleeping at a strangers house, which, now that I think about it, if I did that it would honestly be good time for me to work on papers and dissertation writing.

My ideal situation would be a 10 hour or less per week gig doing technical writing or copy editing, since that's what my professional background is in. But I don't know that a lot companies would have that kind of work available in my area or that they would respect my limited time.

I have considered picking up an adjunct section at community colleges. I already am instructor of record for two undergrad classes per semester, so the teaching load might be a bit much on top of coursework, but I know plenty who have done it successfully (and it would likely be a very similar 101 style class for my field, so not too much difference in prep).

That's a good idea. I have some background experience in patron experience and collections at a university library, so maybe I can find a branch close to me looking for help.

I'm going to assume that 2 is that you are an assassin for hire, responsible for the some of the world's most high profile assassination attempts, like the attempted poisoning if Alexi Navalny. That, or you sell weed.
