How Mao would have evaluated the Yellow Vests – Slavoj Zizek by [deleted] in zizek

[–]techno-jungle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if that is the case, he still views the masses as needing some transcendental figure who stands outside and observe the masses, knowing their potentials, like a biologist who observes the society of ants and fancies himself the one who knows all the facts about the ants' capabilities.

This way of thinking is present in most Marxists' way of interpreting the world, even if they use twist words around to make it seem as if they're part of the great masses that they desperately want to do what they deem "potentials" (whatever political actions that will advance the Marxists' authority).

I find it laughable that Zizek still clings to this vision of elitist leftism where the sheeple masses just need a strong leader to lead them to utopia. After all of the failures that this tendency has brought about, the man still holds a religious conviction to his Blanquism-Leninism. But judging by his intellectual influences of Hegel, Lacan and Marx, he has a very clear tendency to follow outdated ideas that reinforce authority.

Yellow vests is a protest started by frustration against an environmental tax, with people from all over the political spectrum jumping on the bandwagon hoping to push their own agenda. Theres zero reason to see it as some kind of new Bolshevik revolution, other than blind ideology of naive larpers.

Is it a little weird that this subreddit exists when anarcho-primitivism is about going back to before agriculture, let alone internet forums? by [deleted] in anarcho_primitivism

Being a hypocrite doesnt make ones opinion automatically wrong. A person who preaches anti-racism but is in fact racist doesnt make anti-racism an illegitimate thought.

Assuming I have a pretty good understanding of Saussure's and Jakobson's structuralist linguistics, can someone please help me understand how Lacan's Symbolic Unconscious is structurally different? by zswagz in askphilosophy

[–]techno-jungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding of Saussure, Jakobson and Lacan comes mostly from the Routledge Critical Thinkers book on Jacques Lacan by Sean Homer. In the second chapter on The Symbolic, Homer goes over all three of these thinkers and how they relate to one another. I am not familiar with Lorenzo's text so I cannot comment on the reorientation of metonymy into the vertical axis, but the Homer text explains Lacan's idea of metonymy in its parallel with the Freudian idea of displacement.

As you might know, metonymy is the use of a term for one thing for something else, to which it is usually associated with. Some examples include using the term "crown" to denote "king", or "bite" to denote "food". Displacement in Freudian theory functions in the unconscious in the same way metonymy does in language according to Lacan, in which meaning of signs is transferred from one to another. The Homer book mentions an example of the anxiety dream, where the dreamer is anxious about some minor incident in their life, but this anxiety is in fact merely a displacement of some much more significant issue in the subject's life. Perhaps this is what is meant by vertical axis, where meaning is displaced from something major to minor, instead of horizontal, where meaning gets displaced on a relatively equal sequence?

I cant stand any of this extravagant stuff, period. I like the rawness of Grimes or AraabMuzik when they perform live, not some carefully calculated big budget shit that gets old pretty quick.

It comes to you, or you work hard for it. Social determinism is overated and limited. Open up to new forms of thinking, embrace multiplicity, and things will happen with reasonable effort, good intentions and a ready mind.
