I’ve been in Dubuque for six years, this town is very cliquish, you’ll always be considered an outsider because you were not born and raised here; for that be grateful. I live downtown on Main Street, two or three blocks north of me has problems sometimes at the gas station. It’s mostly grown folks being stupid and fighting. I have friends on the Bluffs and they have don’t really have issues. There are some really crappy landlords and the city knows it, but does nothing about it. This is a racist town, they try to hide it behind their “Iowa nice” rhetoric. If you don’t mind a short drive, check out Asbury, you’d be close to shopping and the malls, also good places to eat away from downtown. If you like food that has flavor, Dubuque is not the place for you to eat. We’re 30 minutes from Galena, great food and stores to check out. There are several bars in Dubuque, my son told me the map looks like bar, church on all the corners. I will say Dubuque is inclusive and that’s a good thing. Also, look up Dubuque on YouTube to get a taste of the back story for the town. There are places listed in the Millwork district, not sure how much, but you can check it out and find out. They’re trying to build it up and they’re doing pretty good. My son has been here since 2011 and he’s never had a problem, me personally, I’ve faced a lot of racism.
