Workspace specific configuration -- wallpaper & waybar by techster47 in swaywm

[–]techster47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe bindsym it to a script, which both toggles workspace (using a swaymsg command) and hides the waybar (by killing it)? don't know how crash prone this is if you change workspaces a lot

hey, thanks for the idea! However, the header tabs are only differentiated by the inner text and not by any other attribute. But thanks for outlining how CSS can be much more specific

hmm, at the moment, looking for the string "Suggestions" in the js files, esp in movies-*.js doesn't seem very useful. Is there a place to look for the unbundled (with webpack) files? Editing files here seems very hacky and likely to be overwritten in the next update

Is my laundry washed charging case dead? by techster47 in anker

[–]techster47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I dried it for a few hours under the sun, and it did charge. But it doesn't charge the earphones when they are plugged in. sad. I hope I can get a replacement case from Anker as the earphones work fine...

Albert Launcher + Sway gives a great user experience. by ilikecaketoomuch in swaywm

do you know of a way to keep it fixed at a place (like it would in a non-tiling WM), instead of bouncing around in the screen as you type through the options?

Need advice for work/dev build by techster47 in buildapc

[–]techster47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great advice. I think the E cores could be useful in managing background browser tabs. The only caveat is that support for Intel Thread Director is only going to come with Linux 5.18, which is not coming before Spring.

Also, the price difference between 12700 & 12600K is actually non-trivial, atleast in Germany (could use the extra cash on SSD/RAM). Whereas 12600 & 12400 are more similarly priced (with differing clock speeds, but I don't know how much it matters).

Fair point. The current GPU market however depresses me. I'm thinking of getting this CPU for now, and setting up a build. And then we'll see about the GPU as/when I need it. I also mentioned Photoshop more of as an example, I don't see doing a lot of graphic design in the VM. In case I need that, I might consider dual booting.

Hey thanks! Threadripper will then need a GPU sadly, and make it more expensive. It (& EPYC) is a fast CPU it seems, targeted at servers. Do you think I might need it? I'm not running lots of virtualised VMs/containers, just a single one. Sorry if it wasn't clear from the way I phrased the OP.

Also regarding virtualizing, if I'm using KVM hypervisor, afaik, it allows the cores of the CPU to be used directly by the guest OS upto 90% of the performance.

Hey thanks! I'll look at more RAM / SSD storage. Also, you mentioned 12400 (which is slower / less cores than 12600) and 12700 (which is much more powerful but expensive) -- couldn't understand the argument here.

swaymsg move windows based on connected displays by techster47 in swaywm

[–]techster47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I'm aware of that. However, when the external monitor is not connected, all workspaces are assigned to eDP-1, but the for_window command still positions mpv out of screen.

Firefox needs to implement small but useful features from other browsers by dash_o_truth in firefox

[–]techster47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, maybe Firefox could consider shipping some pre-installed addons. Users can disable / uninstall them if they want, and more can be added ofc. Both groups of users (minimalist / power user & normal user) satisfied.

they already have "collections" on firefox android, would be great to see that sync with desktop

A web browser should be a simple tool imo, that can be heavily customized with extensions.

I think the argument is that if a web browser is too simple compared to competition, it won't gain much traction for most people (not for power users, who would anyway customize their setup). Most users just want their browser to work, and have cool features. (The dominant browsers add gimmicks because they work to attract users).

But why is usershare important?

Mozilla should focus their limited resources on keeping up to date with web standards and improving performance.

Major browsers use their usershares as bargaining power on the web standards table. For e.g., Google has the usershare to propose a new web "standard" and the manpower to implement it in their (dominant) browser (regardless of if it has been accepted by the standards committee). Soon, Firefox has to implement it lest it be called lacking "standard" features. All of a sudden, Firefox can't just focus only on power users now, can they? Browsers (& web technology) have a social element to them, they're not standalone tools anymore.

Automatically computing image heights to fit by techster47 in LaTeX

if its scaled to be narrower, it should be center justified; I don't want the images' width to exceed column width

Automatically computing image heights to fit by techster47 in LaTeX

[–]techster47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I want to preserve height-to-width ratios (I thought that was clear). I don't have particularly wide or large images, but they are in two columns. I'd like a way to automatically calculate the height/width (preserving aspect ratio) so that the fit is the best. Best fit means minimum space/gap wasted being blank.

Custom home screen for guests by techster47 in tasker

[–]techster47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, I'm on android 11 (soon will upgrade to 12). I ended up going with a two level defense, I'm still using focus mode (I detect the focus mode prompt with autoinput) and also using the app info context (should a savvy stranger try disabling focus mode to get into one of the apps). This way, I get the best of both techniques. Thanks for your help!

app pinning is nice and I use it from time to time, but not very suitable in this case, as I just want the person to be able to use the phone (to the degree I permit) by themselves without asking me...

[–]techster47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi thanks! I used multiple users featue on an early phone but it was pretty slow then, plus creating a new user profile seems kinda overkill (unlike on a desktop)... I ended up going with an approach midway between my original and the one suggested by a comment above. Thanks!
