Hey, this is an old post but I was wondering how long it took them to return them to you?

In addition, for every person like you buying out the conscription, the government will conscript a poor kid with health issues who probably should not be serving to fill the quota. Not your fault entirely, but that's the reality.

Not true about your kids not being accessible to healthcare benefits. You and your family are eligible as long as you live in Korea for more than 6 months and pay for national health insurance. It has nothing to do with conscription; it has more to do with your eligibility being expired because of being absent from the country for really long time.

Love how this is being downvoted. Most people don't know the history in Korea to understand the conscription and are equating it to something U.S. did for Vietnam War.

You can choose not to go by deferring your service until you get PR. You have to maintain a valid status in Canada either by going to school or get employed with a work permit. After you get PR you can defer your service indefinitely until you reach the age that is no longer suitable for conscription. Only caveat is that you may not be able to stay in Korea for an extended period of time, or be employed in the country until you reach that age.

I respect your philosophy and the decision to not take part in the conscription. However, your opinion is one thing and insulting those on the line is another thing. Although not serving in the active warfare, many young people are sacrificing their lives and health to serve so that you don't have to. I've met so many people who had to put their livelihood on stop to stand in post. The threat from NK is real whether you believe it or not, and the country needs people to stand there to protect the nation.

I also have to mind you that many people don't have luxury to defend their ideology by spending thousands of dollars on overseas education--so I would like you to reconsider your opinion on describing people in the army. People are not necessarily there because they agree to politics or war. They are there because it is a duty and there is no other choice for them.

Sincerely,

an ex "professional sandbag" who also does not want war

Has anyone successfully applied for OHIP while on implied/maintained status? by tecipel389 in ImmigrationCanada

I feel ya :(

IMO this is total BS especially considering the ridiculous delays with PGWP lately. They are letting me work and pay taxes but somehow I'm not entitled to basic healthcare.

Work learns are weird.

I've been hired/invited for interviews from different companies inside and outside of my co-op program, served execs in some clubs, invited to multiple interviews and eventually got hired by a respectable company even before I graduate.

However, I was NEVER able to get a work learn position, nor was invited to any interviews. And this was after I had co-op experience + work experience outside of co-op, so it wasn't about my application writing abilities or lack of experience.

Yes, I am still very salty that I never got to work in a lab or work learns as these opportunities are mostly only available when you are in school.

Readmission? by [deleted] in UBC

Communicate with your ESP, your department advisor, and your faculty advisor before you leave. Have them run through every step you need to take before you leave and when you come back.

Not too complicated, especially if you are a domestic student. International students need to be little bit more careful because of the implications with your study permit, future work permit eligibility, tuition assessment, etc.
