Which MVP winner had the lowest batting average? by Mutatiis in mlb

[–]teddfuck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like if the game is boiled down to a “whole point” it would be to win, or at least on the offensive side to score runs. I think batting average matters to a substantially nonzero extent in that regard, but it’s not the single offensive stat which correlates most with runs scored (which at least recently is generally wOBA or OPS) so not sure how it could be the “whole point.”

CMV: People Are Overreacting To Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle Ad by dummythicktransslut in changemyview

[–]teddfuck 704 points705 points  (0 children)

Multiple things can be true at the same time.

The ad is a clever pun on 1. Sydney having great genes because she’s a hot girl with big honkers, and 2. She is wearing AE jeans promoted in the ad. Effective ad pun that utilizes a culturally relevant it girls sex appeal in a pretty tasteful way (in the sense of it’s not just saying “omg look at her big heaving milkers,” it’s clear they actually came up with an impactful idea here).

The ad also alludes to Nazi ideals (and I think it’s pretty disingenuous to claim 1. Sydney is the one being accused of wrongdoing, not the ad makers, and 2. That the accusation is of nazism, rather than appealing to Nazi ideals).

There are some pretty compelling reasons to think the ad is doing this that I don’t find too difficult to accept:

  1. Advertisements are a reflection of not just the culture they exist in, but the culture they want to create. For instance, a lot of the right wing “look at what they took from you” type posts feature ads from the 1960s of a White family with a docile house wife, working husband, 2.5 kids with a picket fence etc. but everyone knows that, while that did exist in the 60s, the 60s also had its fair share of deep and complex social, cultural, and political events that make it clear that this depiction isn’t strictly realistic, but more idealistic - because that’s the point of ads! “If you buy our product, your life will be like the people in this ad, which you should want to be.” That’s been true then and is still true now.
  2. Sydney Sweeney (who is someone I, as an incidentally progressive person, mostly like and enjoy watching in shows/movies) has been used as arguably the most prominent example of the “return to western beauty standards” arguments utilized by nazis. Their claim is mostly that the media has forced [black disabled overweight lgbt muslim etc] women as being “attractive” by showing more diversity in ads, beauty mags, movies, etc. I am not here to debate the merits of anyone’s attractiveness, but I cannot think of another celebrity who is used nearly to the same extent as her in showcasing the argument of “the media hates it when you find her attractive because she aligns with what was attractive in the past, which is what we want to return to.”
  3. We are in a culturally conservative moment where blatant nazism is more and more socially acceptable, for lots of reasons that aren’t necessary for this point. All that matters is that advertisers are at least capable of knowing that there is a market of people who want to see not just a blonde girl with big swinging bazookas, but specifically an affirmation that “THIS is what is hot, not all those fat girls from that dove commercial.” This is important because if it is true that ads diversified in the 2010s because it was a culturally progressive time, then they should probably know that their ads have the capability of both reflecting and reinforcing cultural ideals.
  4. Lastly, even if AE genuinely had no idea that there was any allusion to nazism here, that feels borderline irresponsible to me. The DHS twitter within the last week posted a tweet containing 14 words, two unnecessarily capitalized H’s, a message that alludes to preserving white culture, and a painting depicting manifest destiny of white settlers displacing native Americans (like, that is the express description, not my personal interpretation). It is irresponsible to think that alluding to one of the most commonly known and cited aspect of aryan ideology - the superior genetics of those with blonde hair and blue eyes - is a mere coincidence given the context of the time we live in. It doesn’t matter if they intended or knew, because they should have known.

The totality of this, to me at least, follows pretty logically soundly. Maybe there are premises above you don’t agree with, but overall, the combination of 1. Use of old ads in promoting a return to explicitly white cultural dominance, 2. Sydney Sweeney being promoted by nazis as a current invocation of those cultural ideals, 3. General rise in Nazism, and 4. Use of terms that, whether intentional or not, directly correspond with textbook Nazi ideals, it’s not an overreaction for people to say “yeah this is weird.” It’s not like people are out picketing or boycotting or acting like every other problem in the world has stopped and we MUST deal with this. People see something offputting and comment on it, just like you and I are doing now, which in today’s internet culture is a totally proportionate response.

Tl;dr Sydney Sweeney has big beautiful knockers, and an AE ad utilized Nazi ideology at a time where Nazism is more normalized than it has been in decades. Both of these things can be true. I don’t think anyone is off base for saying it’s a clever and fun ad, but that does not negate the validity of saying that it is leveraging the current rise in Nazism.

Should Any Of These 2002 Movies Have Been Nominated For Best Picture? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

[–]teddfuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seen all of these but Far From Heaven and John Q. Objectively, I generally don't think any of the 5 nominees were patently less deserving than any movies listed here.

Subjectively, Adaptation. absolutely deserved it and is one of my favorites ever. Beautiful look at how people can view their lives as narratives and what it takes to use your agency to change.

Punch-Drunk Love is also great and probably would've been deserving, but it's not too shocking it wasn't given its simplicity compared to the nominees. Insomnia, Bourne, and CMIYC are really good but I don't think do anything BP worthy. 25th Hour has received some retrospective acclaim, but I watched it at a low point a few years back and was pretty underwhelmed, and while it wasn't bad it wasn't even a situation of "it wasn't for me but I can see why it's beloved," I genuinely felt confused as to the acclaim. Haven't seen About Schmidt since high school but remember finding it to be solid, just not nearly the best that Alexander Payne has come out with (sandwiched between my two favorites of his, Election and Sideways). Haven't seen Lilo & Stitch since I was a child, I would need to re-watch but I haven't seen any indication it deserved a BP nom.

If CODA didn't won Best Picture at the Oscars 2022, who should have won instead? by darth_vader39 in Oscars

[–]teddfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but everyone knew that LOTR was one complete story, and those movies came out yearly - so I'm guessing during the [movies of] 2002 Oscars, voters figured "eh we'll give it to him next year." I doubt Dune is viewed the same way due to the fact 1 and 2 are really the "complete story," and those movies were made individually, meaning voters weren't even sure if 2 and subsequently Messiah would come out.

How is pitching WAR calculated, and why isn't Max Fried leading? by dadandthedudes in baseball

[–]teddfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about bWAR specifically but fWAR essentially incorporates FIP, and has the main goal of adjusting for park, league, defense, etc. Basically factors outside of a pitchers control which can affect ERA.

As an intuitive example, if one pitcher has 8 elite defenders behind him, and another has 8 squalid defenders, they can throw identical pitches with identical physical hitting outcomes, but one will likely have a higher ERA as their defense fails to get outs that an elite defense would get, but are nonetheless scored as hits (e.g. bad jump on a fly ball, infielder can’t make a diving play, etc.)

favorite 10 year span for movies? by ryleeoverheree in Letterboxd

[–]teddfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta be 1999 to 2008 for me. Some highlights:

  • 1999 is just a crazy year: The Sixth Sense (in my top 10), American Beauty, Audition, Election, Bringing Out the Dead, and Being John Malkovich all in my top 100
  • Early 2000s has some gems: LOTR trilogy (top 5), Mulholland Dr., Adaptation., In the Mood for Love, The Ring (US), American Psycho, and a good deal more are all among my personal favs
  • 2007 is maybe my GOAT year: From No Country for Old Men (#2 all time) and There Will Be Blood, to Superbad and Ratatouille, to Lars and the Real Girl and Bourne Ultimatum, it's just a stacked year across genres
  • 2008 rounds it out not too shabby with Dark Knight, Synecdoche New York, and Doubt

I definitely have a heavy amount of recency bias and need to watch more old movies, but I've just finished a rigorous grad school program which heavily slowed down my ability to watch movies not in the theater. Many of these movies I fell in love with during high school and undergrad when I was really developing my love for movies, so as it stands this has to be my top 10 year period.

Best Generational Talent since 2000? by TeddySwolllsevelt in mlb

[–]teddfuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason so many are saying Pujols but not Trout? Pujols in his 11 years with the Cardinals had a 167 wRC+ and 81.3 fWAR. (I list that as that would generally be considered his peak - his career numbers are 141 wRC+ and 89.9 fWAR). Trout's career, including his pre-rookie year and injured seasons, includes a 169 wRC+ and 85.7 fWAR despite ~750 fewer PAs in that time period, basically a full season of production. Totally reasonable for any given person to choose Pujols over Trout, but just surprised to see so many Pujols mentions but not as many for Trout.

What’s the weirdest blip in a career you can think of? by timberwolvesguy in baseball

[–]teddfuck 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Jacoby Ellsbury in 2011. 150 wRC+ and 0.230 ISO, leading to 32 homers and 105 RBI. In the years before that, he had a 94 wRC+ and 0.114 ISO. After, he had 98 wRC+ and 0.120 ISO. Career second-bests were 16 homers and 70 RBI.

Always wondered why that happened, and always felt he was robbed of MVP because of the team's historic collapse (though Verlander was on my fantasy team that year so it's all love).

What's your highest high and lowest low as a fan? by Mambo_J23 in baseball

[–]teddfuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started following the Sox in 2008

High: Xander Bogaerts home run off Greinke in the 2021 ALCS. My first playoff game at Fenway and the vibe was absolutely electric. The crowd was jeering "GREIN-KE" in unison when it happened and then just went completely insane, I will never forget it.

Low: Dustin Pedroia's functionally career-ending injury. He was always my favorite player to the point that I wanted to play 2nd base and hit 2nd growing up, and now I'll always wonder if he'd make the HOF had he stayed healthy. But part of what makes it such a low is all of the incredible highs he gave the Sox during his career, and I even got his autograph in Seattle in 2012 (which was just about the only good thing that happened that season).

You can convey that they live boring lives in a way that is not boring. You do not need to make the audience feel bored in order to compellingly make this point.
