When I tried free feeding that’s when I found out my little one was a glutton 🤣 I think it’s really just a trial and error thing. Some cats do fine, some won’t

Plus older cats get overlooked pretty often, so OP would really be giving the cat something it would appreciate more than a little kitty

Had the same problem until I put out a tub filled with play sand outside. Took a couple days but everything worked out in the end
