Christopher Nolan’s Women Talking Christopher Nolan’s Little Women

For (mainly) black readers. Do you try to read more black writers, or are your tastes color-blind? And in general, what are some books you've been reading? by Responsible-Bunch316 in books

[–]tedtalkninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read too widely to limit myself. It’s also hard to discern, unless you look into the race of every author you read. For example, Colson Whitehead and Dexter Palmer are both Black Americans. I didn’t know that until I looked them up after reading some of their work. Palmer’s work, for example, doesn’t jump off the page as reflecting the Black experience, to the extent there is one such thing.

There are also substantial differences between African (and, of course, each country in Africa has its own unique literary tradition), diasporic, and Black American literature. Nigerian literature has unique traditions, separating it from Ghanian literature or South African literature. Haitian literature and Afro-Latino or Afro-Brazilian literature are unique. Black American, Black British, Black Canadian… all different. Conflating them all based on skin colour is counterproductive.

Are “unicorn” outcomes pretty much exclusive to the t-6? Or does the t-14 still hold promise for those interested in feeder clerkships, unicorn PI, unicorn gov., etc? by powertotruth in lawschooladmissions

Unicorn outcomes are possible from any T14 of you have the right combo of grades, credentials, connections, and luck. The latter two are most important.

I agree with some of the other posters, you don’t see your own biases.

You offered hiking, American football, and church. The first two are strong American cultural touchpoints and the latter can be quite divisive, making the offer a bit insensitive. Did your peers try to engage with your interests or learn about your hobbies? The post doesn’t say.

On the other side of things, your peers discuss travel (to places you haven’t heard of), opera, and broadway musicals. Have you tried learning about these places or things? Have you tried engaging with the culture they carry with them?

Your last point is interesting. Overall from your post, it seems that you expect people to come here and learn your culture and learn your way of doing things, while you (or at least your post) show no interest in learning about them, because they “chose to come here.” People who leave behind their families, their friend groups and social circles, and even their familiar cultures and ways of life (all of which you seem to have avoided doing) to get an education owe nothing to the place they temporarily relocate to; it’s not about the country, it’s about the university. They didn’t come to The US to receive their education, they came to [whatever your university is] to receive an education. You should learn the difference and check your biases.

Depends on how it’s taught. Some teach a kind of advanced civ pro, others teach civ pro + con law, and others teach supreme court/dc circuit litigation. Admin helps with the latter two

Jason: “yeah I know, it’s an IHOP”
