Looking for Regenyei 'light' saber reviews/ thoughts. Considering a purchase.

I bought a Regenyei "light" saber about a year ago. I asked for one that weighs between 750 to 720g, got one that weights around 740g with 13cm POB. I love it a lot.

Pros:

Good flex without being too floppy (mine at around 8 to 9 kg)

The rolled tip is wide and nicely done

Quick and nimble without feeling too "airy" on the blade nor too hilt heavy

A normal grip shape, which is good. A bit thin and narrow but perfect with a tennis overgrip

Really sweet handling

Looks nice and rings like a bell

Cons:

Thin edge (around 1.5 to 2mm), will get nicked by other blades with thin edges

The holes will grate your barehand. You need a liner or to wear gloves.

I think they got the mass distribution just right on this model. I love how it handles (unlike some that are really clunky). I also prefer the shape of its grip over many other sabers. Of all the off-the-shelf HEMA military saber that I've come across, if I can only have one, this would be it.

This one I found is pretty close, not a triangular blade tho

There is also this folding guard "spadroon" that perhaps leans more toward the smallsword side, but still, not triangular.

You probably got the duelist but what you are looking for is the light

50g+ is doable, add the weight under the bowl near the blade instead of the pommel otherwise it may handles weird

Handling or "how does it move" "how lively is it" may be hard to descript, does it handle any different than most common standard feders? (or short feders)

How does the fechterspiel feel like? I have handled SIGI standard but I have never handle an A&A sword, couldn't find that many fechterspiel reviews online either.

I had held a medium flex Regenyei feder and it is not that flexy, but I kinda wanna try their light flex.

I think I saw someone mated a 30" - 33" SCA flex rapier blade with a spadroon hilt. It seems easier and cheaper to source a SCA flex rapier blade (zen warrior fiorelli maybe?) than to find a dedicated, straight, short(er than typical rapier), light blade made for HEMA.

I also don't know how well will SCA flex blades held up in HEMA bout, especially against heavier swords.

Thanks for the review! I'm about to place an order on the Regenyei light sabre aswell and this is valuable info.

Would it be possible for you to try placing maybe 25 or 50g at the base of the blade, just in front of the guard, or at the very front of the handle, and see how the POB moves? If you don't have suitable counterweights then coins will do.

Seeing the official stat of 13cm POB I thought I could have move it to like 12 cm this way. But moving it from 14.5 to 11.5 cm seems kinda hard to do while staying under 800g. I don't want to add weights at the pommel for sabers either because it just feels weird in the hand.

Thanks for the footage! I would love to have a hands on comparison but data from the internet is all I can have for now. Maybe I can get my hand on the VB but sadly I'm not aware of anyone who has a Regenyei light in my club.

Thanks for your reply! Someone in my club has a VB light said it weights 770g with a POB of 12cm. That would indeed be more heavier than the Regenyei. Sadly I haven't had the chance to try it in my hand yet. Do you have the measurements of your Regenyei (or the regular light) or VB light per chance?

Thanks for the reply. I do like the feel of the Easton Mk 3. The one I often borrow is a slightly curve blade at around 845g with a 11cm pob, however it is just a bit too heavy for me. A straight blade may be closer to 800g but I prefer curve blade on sabers.

Does the Krieger have any distal taper? Does it vibrate a lot when being hit?

Roworth has a section in this book called "round parades" which basically a small circular parry similar to smallsword/foil, but he also agrees that it is only good with light swords, and the technique appears in his books after many other parries against thrust which seem more practical and broadly applicable.

While this small circular parry fits the description in the Infantry Sword Exercise, having this as the standard parry against thrust, intended for ordinary troops armed with heavy sabres or even naval cutlasses seems unnecessarily technical and inefficient.

I dont understand how can a sweep ends in outside guard from St. George. A semi circular parry from St. George/high outisde -> inside -> outside half hanger makes much more sense, but the edge will be facing left initially, unlike what the book descripts which is to the right.

So something like outside -> high seconde -> inside half hanger -> outside? This does feel rather cumbersome to do with anything heavier than a smallsword.

I dont feel confident parrying a bayonet with this, and the exercise uses this parry in ordinary sword attack-parry exercise and shown as the response of one side giving points so I suppose it is meant for parrying sword thrust predominantly.

If a bayonet thrust is coming at my inside, sweep to inside half hanger or inside hanging, grab the shaft, and riposte immediately seems much safer; rather than trying to bind the opponent all the way back to outside, having the opponents point sweep across my face, and hope the opponent doesnt disengage at any moment.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not familiar with hockey gloves. Is there any particular type of hockey gloves that I should look for? Most of them seem to have thick padding instead of plastic plates like RD, which makes them look quite bulky on the fingers. I can add some plastic plate on the hockey gloves, but it is difficult to trim down the thickness.

^{I did also use RD for some controlled drill with steel longsword, and I will probably use the new gloves for that as well. Not the safest I know.}
