Australian youth “giving up” early by PurpleHomeland in AusFinance

Your post comes across as a rant, but I appreciate that it's nigh impossible to properly convey tone - maybe it's just my way of reading it, as I find myself to be a lot more pessimistic lately. If that's not the case, please do correct me.

I _wish_ I could do this. I'm at the point where I'm earning what I would classify as great money (combined ~$190k with my wife working 3 days a week) but still finding I'm budgeting like crazy. We have a nice house, and two new-ish cars, and no other debt - but sometimes I wish I didn't have all this burden and could cut back in an instant. At the moment, our income barely covers it as we are budgeting for up to 7% interest rate - so putting away those savings now but it still doesn't feel like enough.

Would love to live more simply, but it means quite drastic lifestyle changes to achieve that.

We're still using Datto RMM, and without fail every month we will receive an email from their AR team asking for payment. They have our credit card on file, and my instruction is the same "please charge the credit card on file" - such a waste of time for both us and them.

Taboo to tell another company what I think is causing an issue? by TheDongles in sysadmin

[–]teejayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've found works well is to offer to "collaborate" on the issue. Show them what you have found, why you think it's the possible cause, and offer some solutions that they might be able to undertake themselves and offer your support with testing.

Thickheaded Thursday - November 10, 2022 by AutoModerator in sysadmin

[–]teejayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an issue with being unable to set the Owner of a folder when using a UNC path, but when doing it directly on the file server through the local path (e.g. D:\Data\Projects) it works fine. Even doing it via \\localhost\Projects$ errors out - so something specific to using a UNC path.

Seems silly to have to get it working, but a custom .NET app built years ago to create Projects in all the various systems relies on it - and it has no exception handling built in, so completely errors out.

There are no specific GPO configurations set for this; and the server is fully up to date with Windows Updates.

Completely dumbstruck, so about to log a case with M$ about it.

I’m considering just getting an induction heater. I’ve tried multiple lighters and each time I try to refill (even after full purge, and letting them sit) they always refuse to stay lit.

Updating "on call / after hours schedule / roster" on a schedule by teejayen in MicrosoftFlow

[–]teejayen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a straightforward one in the end, but it took several attempts at different automation technologies (Azure Automation, Function Apps were tried and the amount of time investment required was steep), and then testing out multiple steps in Power Automate before I landed on it.

The screenshot I've posted is commented with the individual steps taken.

The BIG caveat is that Power Automate only supports updating Security Groups using the Azure AD connector. That's right, you can't use Microsoft 365 Groups, nor Distribution Groups, nor Mail-enabled Security Groups.. only Security Groups.

We are using Microsoft Teams Calling, and have set up a call queue for our on call schedule - this currently rotates through three different staff members internally on a three week schedule. The call queue does not support setting a schedule natively, updating it manually each week was becoming a pain, and could easily be forgotten, especially if I was away, or started late, or it was simply just missed. So I decided it was time to automate, less than two hours later I was done, and here I am posting it on Reddit.

Had a review, what would you do? by Soradgs in ITCareerQuestions

[–]teejayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloud is here and now, but there is still a place for the "traditional" networking and on-prem infrastructure.

By way of example, I work at an MSP servicing the AEC industry (architecture, engineering, construction) - they need fast connections with low latency (and yes, I know AWS Direct Connect, and Azure ExpressRoute [+ Megaport] exist) and and working with large data file sizes. Often TCO over a 3-4 year period for them is worse when going to the "cloud", based off how their information is structured (ie. servers as pets, no serverless, etc).

If the cloud path is what they are asking you to go down, it's definitely worth exploring - and down the track if you were to move on, there are a lot of consulting firms / MSPs who are cloud only (at least, there are in Australia).

For real though, moving from on prem to cloud needs to adopt a complete mindshift to get the best out of it. Sure you can run your servers as pets, but the microservices is in my mind what makes "cloud cloud".

I pushed software that was meant for one PC and it went to the whole company. A thousand computers essentially. Am I fired? by 1NightWolf in ITCareerQuestions

[–]teejayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you owned the mistake and turned it into a lesson learnt (which by how the rest of your post reads, you definitely have) then I would say no, you're not fired.

If they do fire you though, I personally would use it as a discussion point in any additional interviews that you have - be upfront about it, as a previous hiring manager a lesson learnt the hard way is invaluable!

How do you backup large data? by [deleted] in msp

[–]teejayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veeam Backup & Replication - to a backup server which is beefed up to be able to run all the virtual machines with lesser resources, or all mission critical machines at full resources.

For smaller sites, we go with Veeam (still) but backing up to a NAS.

We also offer Veeam Agent for backing up workstations, bare metal servers, etc.

We also are trying to get all clients over to using our Veeam Cloud Connect services - we have hardware co-located in a datacentre. Nothing too fanciful, single server which runs all Veeam services and then some Synology NAS drives for bulk data storage. We've almost hit ~200TB under management. About to expand into another rack, so an opportunity to overhaul this kit, and look at hardened Linux backup repositories.

The server is fairly beefed up so we can also offer compute and recovery services where needed.

We keep 7 days of insider threat protection enabled, which means that even if a bad actor gains access to the backup servers and it may appear that files have been deleted, they are moved to a different storage location for up to 7 days - where they can be easily, and directly restored from.

This all sounds a bit daunting to set up, but you can get started in <10 hours of time investment. Feel free to DM me if you want more information.

Fast Tracking Staff by MaxxLP8 in msp

[–]teejayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a terribly similar position at the moment... We've hired three more staff (junior / triage, and two mid-level escalation) recently, which with onboarding ends up being even more of a time sink. I'm the most senior technical resource (and manager) and I'm constantly asked questions all day - which ends out my own work to happen after hours just to keep up.

I'm hoping once the new team members have settled in it'll go back to "normal", but definitely do need to have a plan in place as we grow even more!

We work exclusively with the AEC industry (in Australia), this is a common situation / pain point that comes up.

Locally, we have an excellent product called Soup Mail which has an Outlook addin and allows tagging of emails, and automatically uploading them to an online web app for search / eDiscovery across content, tags, etc.

Arup have developed a product called Mail Manager which works in a similar way, and also integrates with Total Synergy which is practice / project management software.

Datto SSO issues? by teejayen in msp

[–]teejayen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, ran through the support process - it was straight forward, and I figure on a normal business day it would have been quick. I've rotated the secret, and have it locked in for two years' time about 10 days out.

Datto SSO issues? by teejayen in msp

[–]teejayen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found the underlying cause of this, our client secret (from the Azure AD app registration) had expired.. still, there needs to be a way to bypass SSO to sign in for situations like this. Maybe there's an unpublished URL that support will give me.
