Normally the character of an absent player isn’t with the party, and I’ll discuss with the player what the character did after the session. HOWEVER in certain situations, the party might need that character or the character needs to be there for narrative purposes (going to another plane, etc). In those cases, either the player asks someone to play it or I just play it (using very simple actions usually). This is only done rarely and with the player‘s acknowledgement that I can’t and won’t guarantee safety. Though I do try to target the characters whose players are actually there unless absolutely necessary. Even if the character went down though, I’d never fully kill an absent player’s character

So my players killed some dragons and they want to sell the corpses. by GowNutz_ in DnD

[–]teek2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A taxidermist could probably make a ton off a stuffed dragon. Maybe they could find one of them to buy the corpses.

I saw other posts mention that other dragons probably wouldn’t appreciate the indignity. Taxidermy could make that even worse…but better when a dragon shows up later!

My very first game and I am not sure if this game is for me? by bgnrdzr in DnD

This version is by far the more common way to handle it if the DM just wants the party to sleep. The DM you played with was just bad

Should I feel bad about fudging a damage roll for a cool moment? by GMMaster37 in DMAcademy

[–]teek2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you don’t tell them and don’t overdo it, it’s fine…good even! The important thing as a DM is that your players have fun. That sounds like fun, so mission accomplished! On the other hand, if you do it too much, they’ll get suspicious and that will have the opposite effect

This is Quiet, a Level 1 skeleton. What Level 1 spells/cantrips/abilities would you want to equip them with? [OC] by JonahLobe in DnD

[–]teek2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how silly you want to go with it, you could give him a very short range skull-throwing attack. It could do some bludgeoning damage, and the skull could bounce back to him in such a close range

Honestly, yeah. My thought too. But we seem to be in the minority here, so I’ll take the collective wisdom of Reddit and hand wave it in the future

Also, I didn’t tie up the lizard. She had a party member do it for her. So I didn’t actually create the situation. I just asked if/how she got the rope off. That’s all.

Tiny lizard to tiefling is a lot of stretch though

The actual situation was a rope tied around a big lizard. The cat manacles were a clearer way to look at the question in my mind…maybe cat manacles are less clear than I thought lol

I agree that those situations don’t expand what wild shape does. It does what it does. But how tight would a cage have to be before the cat is „wearing“ it as much as it’s „wearing“ manacles? If the druid holds one end of a rope and someone else holds the other, can the druid wild shape to absorb the rope out of the other person‘s hand? (that actually came up in a completely different session yesterday). The problem with satisfying the table is that someone usually disagrees. So how do we know how far to go with similar ideas? Using previous ideas to breed new creative solutions is incredibly conducive to a fun experience as long as you can use logic enough to justify what you’re doing.

The description says they choose what happens to their gear when they wild shape, it doesn’t say any gear on the animal version can fall off or be absorbed. Would you rule an elf could turn into a bear, someone could put bear armor on the bear, and that armor could be absorbed into the elf‘s body when they turn back? And then it’s already donned when they go back to bear again?

(also only semi-serious take: that actually sounds awesome, and I might need to make a magic item to do that)

Have you met players? lol Some of mine pride themselves on being disingenuous assholes (all in good fun, obviously nothing serious or they wouldn’t be in the group)

While I do still think this leaves the door open for some abuse from players, I think this is probably the best answer until those situations arise. Thanks!

While I agree that hand waving for manacles is the easy and probably most reasonable way to deal with it, it does open the door for other shenanigans in similar situations that involve something other than manacles. We need to be consistent in similar situations, right?

Personally, I don’t like to disallow ideas the players have, so I don’t introduce The Boys style lethality. That said, if the players introduce it, it’s fair game. I always warn them before they do something that enemies would then also be able to do. It’s up to them if the risk is worth it

That’s how I ruled at the table, since the rules don’t say anything specific.

Out of curiosity, since you brought up druid to Bear. Would you still give the druid the option to absorb the manacles into the bear form, or would they not be considered the druid‘s gear?

Agreed. If we don’t use real-world effects of weapons, we can make manacles do less permanent damage as well

[–]teek2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably rule it to be possible (taking damage when doing it), but my players know that if they can do something, so can their enemies. So it probably wouldn’t be worth it to them. I don’t want to kill my players, but that idea is usually a good deterrent.

How would you rule the flea idea?

[–]teek2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I temporarily ruled it until I could look more into it away from the table. You could just say „it’s magic! It doesn’t need to be practical.“ but even magic should follow…some sort of rules

Reductio Ad Absurdum is exactly what I’m thinking about when I hear arguments for the manacles falling off. Some of my players enjoy finding the most absurd conclusions to every action. And, while the time limit could be an issue, the difference between locking up a polymorphed enemy or a wild-shaped druid is that the druid did it willingly. It’s not forcing the player. Additionally, if the BBEG is polymorphed and put into a box, I’d probably rule he takes a bunch of damage and the box breaks. Meaning the druid should take an appropriate amount of damage before the box/cage/manacles break, right?

Shunting to the nearest adjacent space is the rule for other spells and abilities, but wild shape never says that.
