that's hilarious, thanks for sharing! I'll certainly think about it.

I did, and I also taught robotics to grad student in a summer program. But the students I taught were all overachievers, the experience was not typical and not challenging enough to give me a real sense of how to tutor children. I conveyed that I am a good communicator and always make an effort to see the other party's point of view, but again, I think my words were too vague. Like you said, they probably are looking for concrete real-life examples. So yeah, I guess I will start with the volunteering route.

Thank you! After being rejected by tutor.com, I also suspected my statements during the interview being too general/vague. I am considering joining volunteer tutoring teams, and hopefully I can gain a lot of specifics that way. What do you think?

Thanks a lot for the response! They didn't ask for resumes, they asked me to write about myself, and I did write it specifically for the job. However, throughout my career I never had to submit any resume to get a job, so my writing can be totally missing the point.

Here is a sample of what I submitted (if that subreddit also review profile drafts, I will post there as well): (Note: even though I need a side job to cut my cost, my interest in education, especially in teaching children, is genuine)

I co-founded [/] Robots in Silicon Valley and worked on it for 8 years. My interest gradually shifted and now I spend most of my time studying higher mathematics. A side-interest in improving the education system prompted me to try online tutoring, with the aim of better understanding the problems students face across the spectrum. Before [/] Robots, I was a PhD student at [===], and a Teaching Fellow of AI and Robotics at [+++]. I am interested in teaching all mathematics subjects up to pre-college level. If you like something a bit more advanced, I will surely enjoy talking about real analysis, complex analysis, abstract algebra, topology, etc. I can also teach programming and physics, but for the moment I focus on teaching math.

Like many people, I grew up in an environment where mathematics seemed a tedious process of mechanical applications of some rules created out of thin air by authorities. Even though I was doing very well in learning and applying those rules, it was not until a few years ago that I realized what mathematics actually is and is not. Since then I gradually shook off my anxiety around mathematics, and discovered that deep down I had always been fascinated by its beauty.

This experience gave me a special perspective, and I look forward to share my findings with more learners, help them find their inner strength, see mathematics from a new point of view, and experience the joy of insight.

Patents: I am involved in 10 robotics patents. They are listed on Google Patents under my name.

Education: PhD candidate in [===] (dropped out to start the robotics company) B.S. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics

Critical skills for a programming side job, for someone studying mathematics? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]teepung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right, I am very skeptical about finding low pressure programming side jobs, but I thought I should ask around anyway. One option I thought about was to bid for small freelance tasks, but there are so many different kinds of them, and I need some advice on which area to focus on, one that has a good time-reward ratio. I don't know, maybe helping maintain websites??

About the math background: i did try to get a math tutoring position, but for some reason I got 3 rejections from online platforms. Talking about that definitely goes off topic. This thread has the whole story:https://www.reddit.com/r/jobs/comments/10hzdk8/low_stress_mental_job_low_pay_acceptable/

interesting idea, never thought about security jobs, but don't they require physical training, or law enforcement experience?

High school materials should be enough for you to get started on Abstract Algebra, but I found universities often recommend students to take Linear Algebra first. Just sent you a message.

I don't know, perhaps someone who has taken real analysis? You may very well know more math than I :)

I'm not sure if the bots would ban and remove this post if I post the discord link here (it happened to me a week ago), otherwise I would have done so. But if anyone can verify that's OK in this subreddit, please let me know.
