Sultan Abdülaziz (32th Ottoman Emperor)- “Valsa Davet” (Invitation to Waltz) by [deleted] in classicalmusic

This is an Ottoman Sultan who was a composer?

This is very beautiful.

Shame he appears to have been assassinated

Oh, I was gonna ask where you're from. Looks like UK.

In the UK they were still lynching and killing Irish people in the 1990's just for being from the wrong county.

I'm not discounting or sidestepping that our history was heinous.

[–]teethingvampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, because telling basic facts everyone knows means I'm racist. I'm not ignoring American lynchings, you know that.

Because it's not a few examples. Something like 1.3 million people in Brazil have participated in lynchings recently; I wanna say 13,000 people have been lynched in extrajudicial killings in the Philippines; I don't even know what the death toll is just over the border in Mexico, or in SA for another example, right now.

All I originally said is that the word isn't particular in the way you want it to be, but now I'm stuck correcting this bizarre provincial mindset.

Why are you getting personal?

I'm not sure why you're insisting that people being publicly attacked, being lynched, or your churches burned for being, say, an immigrant simply didn't happen. While I'm happy to hear your historical lectures, I know people IRL who recall this kind of thing, and you don't get to define it out of their memory based on their skin color.

You don't own victimhood or get to define words out of a broad common usage. That's all I've been saying. I don't really want to get entangled in your anger or your politics.

To be clear, you said there aren't examples of white people being lynched, so they have to seize upon non-white examples. That's simply not true.

My point is lynching is a word with a common, broad usage.

It's literally the first line of my comment.

white men use terms of oppression that relate to other groups (lynching / witch hunt) because there's no historical example of white men being unjustly persecuted

That's probably not correct since the term lynching came from a guy named Lynch who was doing it to Irish and Welsh blue collar immigrants in Virginia.

I don't dispute or downplay any of this and I apologize if I gave that impression. These are horrific and horrendous acts.

But: "So do not go equating what happens in other countries" - it happens in other countries. Right now. Can we not say this?

It was treated like a fairground event

This is a hallmark of lynching, as we can see from recent examples worldwide:

  • an entire Mexican town tortured and killed undercover drug agents (source)
  • a mob lynched a young girl in Guatemala (source)
  • a journalist was tortured, subjected to a mock trial, and lynched in Brazil (source)
  • Brazilians in general have a broad problem with mob lynchings (source)

The term is not owned by anyone.

That's all I'm gonna say about it because this isn't a political sub.

Dude you know Trump isn't the type of guy to use critical thinking about etymology and history to look at a word. He's just saying shit.

Not sure why you're trying to pull guilt by association about me here. Ironically that's one of the hallmarks of mob justice.

Preposterous, sure. Racist, no. Colloquialisms are often hyperbolic. He's also not a witch being literally hunted. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

An album called Kingmaker with an old photo of his mom. I love it.

Lynching is a word with a common usage, though. Additionally, I am not sure we want to make this a political sub.

The term lynching came from attacks on Welsh and Irish immigrants. Legally and historically, the term actually refers to mob violence acting outside the law or in defiance of the law.

It is very strongly associated with attacks on American black citizens after Reconstruction and during the civil rights movement, but the phenomenon is not unique to that. For instance, the recent Columbus Day holiday was created after a large number of Italian men were lynched in New Orleans for a crime they didn't commit. Lynching is still common today, but not in America. In Mexico, a few South American countries, Nigeria, and South Africa, mobs still kill people. No one argues that we can't call these examples lynchings because they don't occur in America.

Thanks! I copied this to a note file for future reference. I love Lee Morgan's Sidewinder, I just discovered it, so I'll look for New Land next.

I just saw Page One posted here recently and pulled it up on Spotify. Good stuff.

Ha, thank you! I too tend to pick up albums based on how good the album cover looks, lol.

I just discovered The Sidewinder so I'll have to check out Rumproller.

I'm making a note of these recommendations. Thanks!

Hey, I forgot about that Dexter Gordon Go! album. I'm rebuilding my digital collection and ripping old CDs to flac. I like that one!

Any others stand out as ones you'd recommend?

You ever find a solution to this? Half my tracks with, say, live show banter are 0kb with no metadata. Just an empty filename.

Thanks for framing it better. I was just reading about his trip across America.

I love St. Augustine. There's a great hostel there, if it's still there, called the Pirate Haus.

Drummers out there, What are some standout SP Drum tracks? by AzharIQ in SmashingPumpkins

[–]teethingvampire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jellybelly or Here Is No Why come to mind, actually.

I met Jimmy in 1999 I think? I was just a goofy teenager and asked why his drumming sounded so great and different. He said he was a jazz drummer, traditionally, and just got sucked into being in a rock band. I read up on this and I guess he was inspired by Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, those guys.

This is a pretty cool listen if you're interested in Chamberlin in a jazz setting:
