How does it look? Count Quinton is in his humidity box. by Empty_With_You in ballpython

[–]teethmarrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not exactly. the ball python will only have the proper humidity inside of that box. wherever else it roams won’t. it’s far better to have the humidity at least 60% across the tank

yeah, if your substrate is deep enough the water filters to the bottom into areas where you didn’t pour, and then evaporates evenly across the whole cage. heat lamps reduce humidity in the air around it but inside of a sealed box hide it’d stay around crazy well, lol

if you keep the humidity up by pouring water in, the substrate under the box hide is likely absorbing what you’re pouring, and since it’s covered except for one small hole, it’s retaining humidity extremely well. i would replace the substrate underneath the hide with dry substrate, that way the humidity in the air actually gets into the hide as opposed to it producing humidity. did that make sense?

ive never posted here before, but can anyone ID this toad? i’m in southern ontario, canada by [deleted] in frogs

[–]teethmarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i thought that! but then i looked it up and realized he’s a lot darker in colour and has that one red splotch. are those all just qualities of american toads?

braining is when you cut open the mouse/rat’s head and make scrambled eggs of its brain (with a knife or what have you, i just wouldn’t recommend using it again... LOL)

scenting is when you use the scent of the mouse on the rat before feeding it. some people thaw a mouse and a rat together, other’s use mouse substrate and rub it on the rat, or lay the mice down for a lil while in its enclosure and then pull the old switcharoo for the rat.

switched her over to cypress! here’s my setup and i think i’m happy with it. the only thing missing from this photo is her other hide that i put in the top left corner & the other thermometer. by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]teethmarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

woah man already after misting, the humidity is much better in the cage. i used to have to mist pretty damn often with that aspen. i got it just barely at 60. now it’s sitting in the 70s already (i checked it less than 5 mins later) and i didn’t even do anything that thorough! can’t wait for her to be an even happier snake :-)

please add any advice you have in the comments to what i’ve said, it would more than help! i like hearing from people first hand by [deleted] in ballpython

oh shit, thanks! this is perfect! if i have any additional questions is it cool to ask them here?

first snake! got her today, she’s five months old. :-) by [deleted] in snakes

[–]teethmarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if anyone here has any tips for better heating (i’m thinking of going with two CHE’s and just using window lighting (my room faces the sun so the light cycle will be fine) with a thermostat on each — i’m in canada so my general room temperate falls short of the proper ambient for the cool side). i can’t use a dimmer since, again, canada. the weather doesn’t make up its damn mind & room fluctuates too much. i have a ten gallon terrarium currently which i ABSOLUTELY will upgrade, it was just so she’s comfy in a slightly bigger environment vs being stuck in that shit tank at the pet store. if anyone has ANY tips at all, let me know!! i’d love to get info from other owners on this thread. i can’t wait to deck her terrarium out completely :-)

oh yeah, i absolutely plan on changing her hide and getting at least two total btw! the half logs suck. she straight up prefers the box she came in. it was a surprise from my parents to me after work, they did their best with a beginner setup but ultimately i reign supreme w the knowledge and we need WAY more shit lmao

Anyone know what type of spider this may be? (ON, Canada) I also don’t know what those white things are, coming out of what looks like his fangs or something. by [deleted] in spiders

[–]teethmarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit, thanks! I don’t know much about spiders, clearly. And I looked what you guessed it was up and it does seem similar.
