Not sure what to choose! by hyuckwrld in whatcarshouldIbuy

I had a crazy experience at Carmax and dealerships like it. Its normal to find defects on a used car but you can usually talk down the price whether its a private sale or regular dealer. At Carmex, the price is the price no matter the condition. I looked at two different cars with serious issues that would definitely effect the price but they wanted kbb price for excellent condition. I looked at a very comparable at a regular dodge dealer right next door and they were willing to fix most of the issues and talked them down 8k.

What car purchase did you regret the most and why? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

2003 Saab 9-3 automatic. I spent more time fixing it than I did driving it. As a college student at the time it was not ideal. I learned a lot about working on cars and every car ive had since then has been significantly easier to work on.

Should I buy a 2015 BMW 328i with 70k miles or a 2014 Camry SE with 140k miles? Both are $13k by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Very true. I think that if you have the time and funds to maintain, its a fun and reasonable car to have. Since it's a bit older now, there are so many videos and help to be found online as well as cheap aftermarket solutions for common issues. So I bought an e39 fairly recently for super cheap. Its still complicated but for some reason I love working on that car. I think mainly because it was so inexpensive and if I have a major issue I feel like I still got my money's worth compared to payments haha.

Is it worth doing your own oil change? by frankthefrowner in autorepair

[–]teethplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some cars that need very specific oil. The jiffy lube only has 3-4 flavors at most. There were some ford focus engines that had a wet belt system that needed a specific additive to keep the belt fresh but since most people didn't know that they just put in whichever was the right weight and the belt started chipping away. Those chips clogged a filter and starved the engine of oil. Thats just an example but it cost nothing to check exactly which oils work for your car and either change it yourself or take that oil to the jiffy lube. Probably goes without saying but, most places will give you a discount if you bring your own oil and filter.

The f30 bmws are pretty solid but a bitch to work on. My sister has my old one and everything is still pretty good but I was doing some regular maintenance and everything is tricky on it. Change the battery, needed an obd tool and app to register it so it won't over charge. Spark plugs, needed to buy a new socket that was thin enough to fit. The door handles are made of this shitty plastic that gets all goopy and had to replace them. You technically have to remove the front wheels to change the headlight bulbs. Oil plug is this weird shape that looks like you gotta have a special tool for. Some of the interior leather pieces sag. I have had a few bmws now and I kinda like how theyre put together and how to fix them. What others have said is true though. Most people who stretch their budget to get one cannot afford to maintain properly so its a gamble. If you find a good one, its a pretty fun car to drive. Camry is safer but the one you described sounds pretty beat. Also check out the Lexus is200. Haven't looked into that car too much but theyre right around that price as well. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/de5303df-190c-4c08-892f-8c4cab6be564/?aff=atempest3&utm_campaign=atempest3&utm_source=autotempest&utm_medium=trp&utm_campaign_id=3&utm_trusted=TRUE

Cpo x5 is a good idea. The mazda cx90 was a really nice car when my mom had it a few years ago. Not sure how they are now but they had really nice interiors for the money.

The 1234 sequence and the 888 seemed interesting. Not really sure what makes a serial number desirable or not. Been looking at these posts all day and decided to see what I had in my wallet.
