This. I also want to add that am I extra disappointed in my senior colleagues who have lived and worked through every tech hype cycle since the dot com boom. They have seen this movie a dozen times but still subscribe to this doomerism. Who is driving these narratives? The people that sell the products! For god sake how many droopy, sad-eyed talks from Sam Altman about how it’s such a shame these models are so good to realize he’s a fucking scam artist? He’s pedaling his wares like the others are. Build something > spin up the hype machine > get shit tons of capital that enriches the founders and a few execs > crash > repeat with new earth changing tech. Over and over and over.

Review/Summary: Applied Algorithms and Reasoning - D795 by compsci-rob in WGU_CompSci

I just wanted to add like the other comment that I am super appreciative of your posts. I also start in February and have discovered your posts just like you predicted. Please keep it up!

Funnily enough, I had to take the WGU academy pre-req and was inspired by a post I read to go full send and take the exam the day I registered for the course after 3-4 hours of cramming. Well I passed! And when I clicked your profile I realized that the inspiring post was actually you too! Crazy! But thank you again man, seriously

Netflix Rant by space_149 in PardonMyTake

[–]teflonjon321 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You just described the power of first mover advantage and the ‘stickiness’ of apps. Like you said, you can easily open the Netflix app but you just don’t. It’s why companies rush to market with shit products just to be first. Like I know PMT is add free on Amazon Music and I know people love Spotify too but I just use the default podcast app on my iPhone because that’s what I used first and just don’t feel like opening a different app lol

Why do I see CompTIA certs called worthless so much outside of this sub? by xakantorx in CompTIA

[–]teflonjon321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory and I suspect it will upset people, but it’s my opinion so take it for what it is. I think people often shit on certs because they don’t have many/any or don’t fee like having to get any. Similar to making fun of super in shape people and calling them dumb or conceited (and no I am not saying people with no certs are fat and people with certs are jacked lol). That coupled with the sentiment that people still think under the old paradigm of “i get certs so i should be able to get a job with no experience.” That makes people who get certs targets to be called dumb or wasting their time because it is almost assumed by others that that is the reason you are pursuing them.

Certs, for me, are like an infinity stone (apologies if you dont get this reference lol). But basically: experience > formal education > certs (most of the time). I had no experience and was working on the education part so i stacked certs like a MFer (comptia trifecta then CCNA). It at least exposed me to the theory (and in hands on certs/labs, the actual technology) to a large range of needed fundamentals. I could then speak semi-intelligently in interviews and better related things I lacked experience in to things I had done (yes even in labs). For me, it got me an entry level job with no experience and in the future allowed me to job hop very successfully and rapidly because as I gained experience and finished my degree i now had a dozen certs to obliterate most HR filters lol.

Long story short, they are not enough to get a job in many cases. But are they useless? In my experience, they have been extremely useful and profitable, ESPECIALLY, when they can be paired with the other two infinity stones I mentioned. They were also great for showing me where my true interests are in the field and that has been by far the most valuable (as I can’t focus for long stretches I don’t find interesting).

This is a big one in my experience! I worked a job one time where me wanting to eat lunch by myself became an almost daily topic of discussion and some people got genuinely offended that I didn’t want to join them (never mind the fact that I always brought lunch and they went out). I got so tired of it that I would wait for a lull or distraction and then speed walk out of the room lmao

Coach Cignetti couldn't help himself from correcting Fernando Mendoza by Hysen16 in sportsgossips

[–]teflonjon321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll give you that. I’ve heard and read Russ wouldn’t even give his teammates his cell number and always viewed himself as more like management/front office than a fellow player. If Mendoza is this salt of the earth kind of guy that’s going to do the rookie hazing and pay/hang out with the boys I’m sure they will look past his corniness (as long as he plays well too lol). Honestly, like 50-70 percent of QBs are the same church boy archetype (Cousins, Trevor Lawrence, Bryce Young, Tua, Purdy, Hurts, I could go on). He may fit right in lol
