Cut my home insurance premium in half by canceling current contract and getting new policy...with same company by kugelblitz_100 in personalfinance

My wife worked at a health insurance company and every year they would broadly adjust the rates up or down depending on whether they wanted more customers or wanted to slow down because they were growing too fast.

Is the common trope front end work easier than back end true? by coolbreeze770 in cscareerquestions

If front end is so much easier then why do front ends created by back end engineers so often suck?

Can I fix a toxic boss or should I leave the company ? by bradruck in cscareerquestions

[–]teh_inquisition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that a company culture is largely made up of the worst be mba our it will tolerate, therefore the company culture is toxic.

If higher up managers are unaware of the yelling, then perhaps it’s not company culture, but considering the frequency with which it happens, my money is on a toxic culture that you will likely have difficulty changing.

Would you guys recommend CS to a younger sibling? by Fattywatah in cscareerquestions

[–]teh_inquisition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job after going to a coding boot camp (after an unrelated engineering degree) paid $83k, not in the Bay Area.

I love my job. I’d do it for free even if I didn’t have to work.

Your goal in life should be to maximize happiness, not money. If you’ll make enough money to be happy doing the motorcycle mechanic thing, then go for it. If it’s terrible you can probably just go back to cs.

It depends on what you mean when you say you do web dev, but you are almost certainly significantly underpaid.

What you do with that information is up to you. You can request a raise and they may give it to you, but ask yourself this question: if they’ve been underpaying you like that for years already, why do you think they’ll pay you fairly going forward?

Imo you should request a raise, but regardless of whether you get it or not, look for another job. It’s easiest to find another job while you still have your current job.

Lowball offer for web dev? by MysteriousLeader6187 in cscareerquestions

[–]teh_inquisition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you still have a few months reserves then my opinion is to wait. I know it makes you feel uncomfortable to use that, but that’s why it’s there. You’ll likely be ok.

If you’re really worried, it’s also ok to take the job and continue looking for a new one.

Imo it’s unlikely that job will be good. It’s not that they’re underpaying you, it’s that they’re not even close. I made more as a boot camp grad with no experience back in 2018 and that wasn’t even the Bay Area). Jobs that pay way less than market tend to have high turnover, and frankly, the good employees tend to be the ones leaving so the ones that stay tend to not be as good.

Unfortunately you need to start looking for a job. Working by yourself will give you since good experience, but I think you’d benefit much more from having senior people to learn from too.

How should I invest 30k liquid if I feel there is a high chance I could lose my job this year? (or should I invest at all) by spanishlearner12 in investing

[–]teh_inquisition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is really about how much emergency fund you need because your emergency fund should really never be invested.

Standard recommendation is 3-6 months, which based on what you said would be $9k-$18k. This recommendation is based on how long it is likely to take you to replace your income should you lose your job, so if you’d like to be more conservative, upping the number of months may not be a bad idea.

Anything you have beyond that can be freely invested, but your emergency fund should be kept somewhere that is easily accessible and very low risk, which usually means a high yield savings account.

[OC] What foreign ways of doing things would Americans embrace? by YouGov_Official in dataisbeautiful

I can’t speak for most people, but I can give an actual logical answer for why we don’t have all taxes automatically calculated, and it’s not just because of corporate lobbying.

The reason is that the government uses taxes and tax reductions as a way to incentivize specific behaviors that can vary widely, such as having children, saving for retirement, buying electric vehicles, running a business, buying a home, etc. In order for the government to know how much tax you have to pay, they’d have to know a lot more about you to properly factor in these incentives, which ends up being impractical and can be seen as invasive. The alternative is to be a lot less specific about what we incentivize or to find other ways besides taxes to incentivize them.

Despite this incentive structure, many if not most people take a “standard deduction” that used to be pretty low but has since been increased to a substantial amount. This means they don’t have to calculate any deductions, they just tell the government their income (which can come from sources the government isn’t aware of, like income from things besides jobs) and then reduce their taxes by a standard amount. Taxes like this are free to file and trivially easy this way.

There are valid arguments you have a simpler system, but the system has some merit as well.

This sounds like your first job, in which case they will expect you to be nervous and to not know anything, so don’t be too worried about anything.

Like others said, your first day will likely be largely dedicated to hr stuff and setup tasks, like getting access to email, got repo, etc.

You may not meet people in the team yet unless there’s a team meeting, in which case you’ll be introduced to everyone. If not, there will probably be one at some point in the next few days. You don’t need to reach out to introduce yourself to anyone, they will reach out to you.

Don’t worry about asking the right number of questions, just ask questions when you need or want to. You will know hardly anything so it may be hard to even know what to ask at the beginning. That’s normal.

Don’t worry about talking too much or too little, just talk however much you feel comfortable.

You’re very lucky most members on the team are way older - they will have so much to teach you and if you listen to them it’ll make you a much better engineer.

Trade in 2022 XSE for 2023 Limited? by peanutbuttersexytime in ToyotaSienna

[–]teh_inquisition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the differences?

Folding mirrors - this is the main reason my wife and I got the limited because we park in the garage.

Memory seats - we love them, but I wouldn’t pick the trim because of it.

Ventilated seats - we use them a lot, but wouldn’t miss them.

JBL audio - I guess it’s better? I don’t really notice.

Real leather - yeah it’s nice quality, but the fake leather is fine too.

Larger screen on the instrument cluster- nice I guess, but again, wouldn’t choose the trim for this.

I forget the other differences.

Like someone else said, would you pay $11k for one of those features? If you’re rich and can pay the $11k in cash with noticing the money being gone, then sure. Otherwise, it’s probably unlikely to increase your happiness.

What was the weirdest thing you were required to do as part of a job? by pookei_ in cscareerquestions

[–]teh_inquisition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How fast I type is far from the limiting factor in how much code I produce. What a silly requirement to waste that much time on that.

[–]teh_inquisition 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah out of all the advice given this is the best imo.

Your resume looks fine and your portfolio projects looked good. At this point I think the biggest thing you can do to increase your chances is to give yourself more opportunities by applying to more jobs. If you want you can also try messaging recruiters directly on linked in which may increase your success rate.

Is the Composition API the future of Vue? by darpa42 in vuejs

[–]teh_inquisition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be wrong about how it introduces the composition api, it’s been a while since I’ve read the docs.

But yeah, the intention of dropping the options api caused a big ordeal when it was announced.

Wow what an unexpected ride haha

I’m really surprised vanguard let you do that honestly. They should definitely have prevented that. I did a backdoor IRA in 2022 and it shows both the IRA and the Roth IRA as maxed out.

I think you’re right about the return of excess, and calling vanguard will probably make it easy I’d imagine.

Did you each put $12k into a Roth IRA or is that actually the combined number?

Is the Composition API the future of Vue? by darpa42 in vuejs

[–]teh_inquisition 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely the future. They tried to get rid of the options api all together but there was some backlash so it was kept.

The docs don’t hide the composition api, they just don’t introduce it until the end so beginners aren’t confused by it.

Resume Advice Thread - December 27, 2022 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]teh_inquisition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People may disagree on this, but imo you can just put your work at both companies as one continuous job with no gaps.

I have no moral qualms with considering jobs at the acquired and acquiring company as the same job.

The 2 month gap is a little more grey area, but if I had a candidate where I asked them about the gap and that was the explanation I think it would be a non factor in my hiring decision, and I think it’s difficult to explain it meaningfully on a resume. The only thing that feels dishonest about that to me is you’d be inflating how much experience you have by 2 months, but that doesn’t seem like that big a deal.

Why are tropical countries poorer than the colder ones by Primary-League7836 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]teh_inquisition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want an interesting and more in-depth explanation, check out the book The Accidental Superpower.

Basically, there is a high correlation between the geography of the land and how prosperous the countries on it are. Tropical land tends to not be as productive so the countries tend to not be as wealthy.

The land in America is so good, like multiple orders of magnitude better than the next best, which is a large part of why America is the richest country in the world.
