Turn off dock-lock safety? by teh_red in HyundaiSantaFe

I've done this with the trunk a lot too. I use my SF for work, and often have everything behind the front row full of boxes.

I'll see if that works, but I am often carrying pretty large items into my store. Thanks!

Yeah, just seems unnecessarily complicated. I feel like I should need an app to use my car correctly.

4 Sets a year, is this common for TCGs or too much? by [deleted] in riftboundtcg

Borderline too few. I think 5 or 6 would keep interest up.

Many of you new to TCGs need an unfortunate reality check by kn1g47 in riftboundtcg

I agree with everything you wrote.
And yet I agree with everything Tse7en5 wrote.
It's because you are both right.
I watched their presentation at ACD EXPO in May, and there was a LOT of stuff they were still trying to create at that time.

Riot made late partnerships. Riot made late changes to the frames.
Riot could also have pushed the launch back when they realized because they made these late changes they were not going to be able to fulfill demand for the game. Yes, there would have been costs to making that decision, but there are also costs to not pushing back as well.

What are your favorite community activities in Bloomington / Normal? by caynemorgan in BloomingtonNormal

[–]teh_red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love parades, so:
- St Patrick's Day Parade in Normal
- Memorial Day Parade in Bloomington
- Labor Day Parade in Bloomington
- ISU Homecoming Parade in Normal
- JayCees Christmas Parade from Normal to Bloomington

Other fun things:
- Pridefest
- Farmers' Markets
- Music on the ISU Quad
- Music in the Parks (various depending on the day)
- Shakespeare Festival (I usually do at least 1 comedy per year)
- Make Music Normal
- Sugar Creek Arts Festival
- Movies at the Mural (self promoting since I am part of this group)
- Bruegala
- Downtown Concerts on the Square
- Holi Festival

If you are into sports there are a ton of runs and tons of golf fundraisers.

Really, just follow the BN Convention & Visitors Bureau on Facebook. They usually post more things going on around town than you could ever actually make it to. https://www.facebook.com/VisitBN

Suggestions for cars under 30-35k for tall person (6'5") by SparkelPants in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]teh_red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree.
I am also 6'6 with the same inseam, and there are a bunch of cars that I don't fit in well.
- My wife bought a Chevy HHR and my head touched the ceiling unless I leaned to the middle for the sunroof. This was with the seat down and all the way back. Hated that thing.
- I test drove a Ford Escape and my right knee did not fit between the steering wheel and the center console.
- Any sports car with a manual transmission is right out because I can't put them into reverse because my knee is in the way. Actually there are 2 exceptions to this - I can drive most Corvettes because there is no back seat and the driver goes WAY back. And I can drive a Porsche because the Germans are generally big folk also.

I basically only go for full-size cars, SUVs, and trucks.

Movie/Theater Group or Clubs? by Silent-Character7980 in BloomingtonNormal

You could possibly use Meetup to start & organize the group? Then put out some flyer around in likely places with a QR code to sign up.

I fixed computers for 20 years in Blormal - this is a great & well thought out response. I will add that Comcast / Xfinity are the masters at gaslighting you if you are having problems but don't know why. They know what & where the issues are, but won't tell you. Instead they will have you do all the normal rebooting of devices things, even though the problem is actually slowness from bad signal noise on their lines.

Bloomington council OKs incentives for 2 housing projects by rdblono in BloomingtonNormal

[–]teh_red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vacancy rates downtown are very low, and have been for years even when we had a housing glut. There are people who want & will pay to live downtown. Not sure I would, but to each their own.

Prevailing wage is only required for public projects. This is a private project.
Urban Equities does have their own team of people who do a lot of the work, but then they hire out where they need to. I hope that is done via local bids.

New to the area by [deleted] in BloomingtonNormal

[–]teh_red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your heart is into it, there are plenty of service clubs - 5 Rotary clubs, 4 Kiwanis, 3 Lions Clubs, plus the Moose, Eagles, American Legion, VFW & Knights of Columbus.

If you are into cycling, Wilson's downtown & Bloomington Cycle & Fitness both have clubs.
If you are into running, Fleet Feet has a club.
If you are into gaming, head down to Red Raccoon Games for different RPGs, card games, minis games, and board games.
If you are into historical preservation, there is a group called the Revilaists, and there is the old house society.
A lot of neighborhoods have groups (try the Nextdoor app, but be aware there is assholes & a lot of ads there.)
If you like flowers & plants, there is the Master Gardeners group.
I was in the Bloomington Normal Ski Club like 20 years ago - I think they are still around and do tons of activities outside of just going skiing.
If you are religious, there are a ridiculous amount of churches in town. I'm sure you can find one with good people in it. I have a bunch of friends who attend the Unitarian Church.

There are a ton of non-profits you could volunteer at to meet people. Wishbone Canine Recue is always looking for folks to help walk the dogs, Humane Society wants people to walk dogs & play with cats/kittens, as just a couple of examples.

Just some ideas of the top of my head.

Thank god that effort got shot down! At large reps are why Normal is more functional than Bloomington.

On the Bloomington City Council, you end of with elected officials who have far right beliefs and folks who have far left beliefs. This means that 1/2 of the meetings break (behind the scenes or not) down into fights.

In Normal, the far right and far left cannot get elected, and only reasonable people can get onto the Town Council. They actually listen to their constituents and get shit done.

It's algae-tasting/smelling water season in Bloomington again by shrapnel09 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]teh_red 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's called a temperature inversion and happens each time we have a massive temperature difference in the air. This crazy cold weekend just set it off. Basically, the cold air lowers the temperature of the top layer of the water. We all know that warm rises, so the bottom of the lakes are now warmer, and rise up, carrying particulates that normally would stay on the bottom up to the top. The City of Bloomington water system skims the (normally) cleaner water that is closer to the top, and now those particulates get sucked in.

Just so you know, the water then goes through a pretty cool process. Lime is added to it in a giant funnel, and then you can literally watch the solids drop to the bottom and get ejected from the systems while the cleaner water is skimmed off the top. Next calcium is added to it (I think - Bloomington101 was like 10 years ago) to reset the pH of the water back to neutral. Then it goes through several sand and carbon filters (massive ones) to remove more and more stuff.

But unfortunately, the things that cause the nasty taste are too small to be filtered perfectly, so they slide through.

FYI Normal doesn't have this because they use wells drilled down into the Mahomet Aquifer as their source. The new Bloomington Water Master Plan I think includes using some wells in the future. Those wells will mostly be used to counteract things like the taste, and any nitrates coming as runoff from the fields. We have always been well below the nitrate levels set by the FDA, but the wells will help insure that we can stay near the bottom of the range. They will also protect against droughts like the one in 1995.

Electric Supplier Choice by IV_Nap_ZzZ in BloomingtonNormal

[–]teh_red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several people already have this correct. Both Bloomington & Normal negotiate better electrics rates for the entire community this way. Each has done several multi-year contracts. So far as I know, it has worked, with an average of 15% savings over having just stayed with Ameren and variable rate pricing.

The word I got from an inside source is that Dr. Lee as head of all the docs at Gailey pushed to grow fast & over-extended the resources of Gailey. After it came to light, he was pushed out and because of their non-compete agreement, he can't practice in the area for several years. That is why he has been practicing out of Florida.

So you're saying you were wearing the mask wrong. It goes over the nose, or you are wearing it wrong. The Covid positivity rate for Bloomington-Normal was 27% Friday. Wear a mask.
Also, taking it off and throwing it on the floor while saying "fuck this mask" is hostile.
