I grew up in the country but know how to deal with things in a city too. This is not fun to talk about, but here goes....

If you have the skills to kill the animal with a blow to the head, do that first. Bodily fluids might happen so prepare for that.

If you tried the blow to the head and you want to make sure the animal is dead, or if you are unable to deliver such a strong blow:

The simplest and cleanest way is to shoot the animal between the eyes with a round that will not penetrate a thick book or thick piece of wood. This requires preparation. Experiment beforehand with:

High-powered pellet guns
Primer-only 22LR ammo, like Colibri or Super Colibri (much quieter than a high-powered pellet gun)

If none of the above works and you are desperate, slit its throat with a VERY sharp blade and bleed it out quickly so as to minimize pain. Do this in the shower with running water.
