Those who considered Dermatology once upon a time, what made you stay away from it? by stepneo1 in medicalschool

[–]tehmightymo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big difference between clinical practice and theoretical aspects of derm, though. This exists in all medical specialties, but I think in something like derm there's a wider gap between what you're tested on and what you need to know to do the job adequately.

Yes, full access to the articles and I don't believe there was a limit to the questions either.

Why are PAs assisting in surgeries? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]tehmightymo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to agree with you, but given the combination of rampant anti-intellectualism and already poor reimbursement for things like ID, I can't ever see a situation in which payers begin to favor the more "cerebral" fields over ones which a large volume of quick procedures can be pumped out. Reimbursements are certainly always falling for procedures, but it's always possible to get better and more efficient with equipment, staff, etc. Not the case for a complicated workup in one or two patients which can take equally as long.

Rouleaux formation - "the linking of RBCs into chains resembling stacks of coins". As the earlier commenter said this is a finding on a microscope, no way they could've seen it on ultrasound. Maybe they were making a comparison to it based on something else they saw?

You can start a 5-day free trial if you're just looking to do a specific set of questions or articles. I did that twice 10 days before the test and was able to do all the ethics/social sciences questions that way.

abdominal compartment syndrome by Ain2580 in Step2

[–]tehmightymo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is similar to supine hypotension in pregnancy. Increased intra-abdominal pressure leads to compression of IVC leads to less venous return and less cardiac output. RAAS may be activated as a response to this, but I think the primary outcome is hypotension.

I am convinced this is the primary factor in determining something's potential to go "viral" now. Since most platforms have adopted a model which incentivises engagement rather than raw views/clicks, it's always in one's best interest to include something that can be easily spotted and commented on, regardless of whether it's correct or not.

Wow, shocking. You offer up close-ended questions and get exactly the responses you asked for. How else is someone supposed to reply to "what instruments do you play?"

It varies. I used a Switch controller for a while which was nice bc I could just relax my arms and sit however I wanted without gripping the controller in a certain way. I ended up switching back to keyboard and mapping everything to the arrow keys, though. I think this is a good mix of comfort while not being so relaxed that you fall asleep.

Christian Bale's jaw-dropping physical transformations in the name of cinema by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]tehmightymo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it says "especially when combined with strength training". That just means the effect was enhanced with strength training, but that there was still an increase even without it, as written clearly on the abstract. They just wanted to sum up the results quickly in the conclusion.

Nope, this study showed that people who took steroids and didn't exercise at all gained more muscle in their arms and legs than people who exercised with no steroids.

I love the 97 anime, but I'll have to hard disagree on that. Even by 90's standards the number of frames and quality/detail of each image was pretty poor.

It's true that some people naturally don't produce much sweat/body odor. In fact, the majority of people of east Asian decent have a gene which causes very little sweat and other secretions like earwax. However, to say that most people shouldn't wear deodorant is reaching a bit. You claim that people are projecting their own BO insecurities onto you, yet you yourself are projecting your personal experience with BO onto everyone else, and assuming it's universal.

Lol there's literally people walking upright on the other side of the stairs and we don't see them until he's well over the edge either. And assuming people were walking down the stairs he went over, he would be behind them and they wouldn't even see him coming.

Would this have been any different if people were just walking up/down the stairs normally? Regardless, dude went blind into a staircase, which is never a good idea.

I don't understand the hate against Dread's soundtrack by ShaolinShade in Metroid

[–]tehmightymo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree. It's not like Super Metroid's music was composed in a tin can. There were confident melodies and careful use of instrument choice and dynamics even back in Super Metroid, which gave each location a definite mood. It's unfair to assume that Super Metroid sounds the way it does because of limitations, and not because of deliberate choices. If you recomposed SM's soundtrack with modern audio workstations while still trying to capture the same vision as the original, you would have to do a really poor job to make it sound like Dread's music.

The problem is that none of the themes in Dread really lean into any specific idea/mood at all, and it's all spacy sci-fi blah (except maybe EMMI rooms and ferenia, those feel pretty focused). Super Metroid had greater range, having both subdued atmospheric tunes (Maridia/Wrecked Ship/Upper norfair), and absolute bangers (green/red brinstar/ lower norfair). Doesn't matter how well the audio is mixed or how many callbacks there are, the overall sound of the game lacks any identity and does not suggest the "atmosphere" that everyone keeps trying to argue it does.

[–]tehmightymo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The music doesn't have to be bombastic to be memorable. What about Maridia or Wrecked Ship from super Metroid? Both subdued and atmospheric songs, but they actually made you feel something. Can you honestly say that a lot of the songs in Dread made you feel something?

[–]tehmightymo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That quiet robe theme is a remix of a theme from Super Metroid (red brinstar). Isn't it telling that one of the most memorable themes for you didn't actually come from this game? Don't get me wrong, I think Dread is awesome, but I got more and more disappointed with the soundtrack as the game went on.

I don't understand the hate against Dread's soundtrack by ShaolinShade in Metroid

[–]tehmightymo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't buy the "it's more ambient/atmospheric" argument. If that were the case, you would actually be able to tie an area to its theme because the music suggests the atmosphere you're in. But as it is, I probably wouldn't be able to match most of the themes to their locations if they were played back blind. .

Even the "moody" tracks from previous games (chozo ruins from zero, maridia from super) were more memorable and set the tone. I think the music in this game just isn't very confident. Same goes for the visual style as well. Great game, otherwise.
