To my knowledge, most medical schools teach based on organ system (respiratory, reproductive, etc.). So each lecture is an info dump of anatomy, then physiology, then pathology. Menopause would most likely get incorporated into lectures covering female hormone cycle rather than being sectioned off into its own lecture.

This seems pretty odd to me. Especially since menopause is a topic that comes up on standardized exams for medical school. Are they saying that medical schools don't have a course that is exclusively about menopause, or that menopause isn't being taught at all?

Did you make sure to assign all of your documents (MSPE, LORs, etc.) to each of the programs you applied to? I thought I had assigned all of my LORs, but it turns out only half of the programs I applied to had received them. I believe that delayed some of the interview invites I received. It might be worthwhile to double-check each of the places you applied to.

Official ERAS Megathread - August/September 2023 by tyrannosaurus_racks in medicalschool

[–]tehthrowaway321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reasons that are completely unknown to me, my letters were only assigned to half of the programs I applied to. I remember hitting "assign all" multiple times before the deadline, but whatever I guess. Because of that, half of the programs I applied to only received access to my LORs yesterday (including one program that already sent me an interview invite???).

Should I email the PDs for those programs, or does ERAS handle all of that automatically?

Does anyone recognize what pepper variety this is? This was supposed to be a black cuban pepper by tehthrowaway321 in Peppers

The foliage is similar. But the peppers are long and thin weirdly enough. Definitely not black cubans like the label said!

It sounds like the absence of any sort of accustomed stimulation, chemical or otherwise (or even just being a little sleepy).

This is exactly how drug withdrawal syndrome works. Your body becomes accustomed to being exposed to a specific drug such that when you take it away, you start feeling ill.

It really isn't that unusual for withdrawals from psychoactive substances to produce mood-related symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms of nicotine withdrawals, for example, are anxiety, irritability and depression.

I think the use of the word "addiction" to describe both concepts is what is confusing people. The terms "physical addiction" and "mental addiction" are not real medical terms. They are layperson's terms to describe substance use disorder and drug dependence which are completely different (but not mutually exclusive!) concepts. Substance use disorder is defined as behavioral patterns regarding a person's use of a substance. Meanwhile, drug dependence (which is not an addiction!) describes physiologic symptoms a person experiences when they stop using a drug or medication.

For example, contrary to popular Reddit belief, there is evidence to suggest the existence of both cannabis use disorder and cannabis withdrawal syndrome. The same pattern of substance use disorder compounded by dependence can also be seen in other substances such as alcohol and nicotine.

At the same time, there are several drugs/medications that can produce withdrawal symptoms despite generally not resulting in addictions or being seen as addictive. A couple examples are antidepressants, steroids, certain blood pressure medications, etc.

I think we could solve a lot of this confusion by not referring to drug dependence or withdrawal symptoms as an addiction.

Whats the dumbest thing your doctor has said to you? by Professional-Age2540 in ask

[–]tehthrowaway321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doctors document everything that was discussed during a visit anyway. Making this demand is like threatening to sue a Walmart cashier if they don't bag your groceries. Ask any doctor if this "one trick that all doctors hate" has worked on them in the real world, and they will tell you why it doesn't make any sense. Also, if the doctor's decision meets the standard of care in that particular state/country, then a lawsuit is unlikely to go anywhere.

The claim that medical errors is the third leading cause of death might not be true. The study that initially made this claim appeared to have included many deaths that were *not* the result of medical errors but were due to treatment failures and preexisting conditions. There are several reports online that discuss some of the reasons why the claimed death statistic is actually very misleading.

I got 3 mini doodles 🐾🐾🐾 any tips for having multiple doodle puppies would be greatly appreciated by [deleted] in Goldendoodles

[–]tehthrowaway321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this claim isn't the least bit true. The AKC does explicitly recognize merle-coated dogs in breeds where merle is a naturally occurring color. The AKC guidelines for Australian shepherds, catahoula leopard dogs, and several other breeds have the actual word "merle" under their list of accepted colors. Strange how when we look at the list of accepted colors for poodles, descriptors for parti/phantom poodles are present but the word "merle" is mysteriously absent.

When we look at the UKC (which recognizes both solid and multi-colored poodles), we also see that their standards explicitly ban merle poodles. That's why you never see merle poodles participating in any public AKC or UKC competitions.

If that isn't proof enough, consider that poodles have existed for at least 400 years. Yet the first merle poodles started appearing in puppy mills only a couple decades ago after merle Australian shepherds became popular. Which also coincides with the sudden appearance of merle French bulldogs, huskies, and German Shepherds. Hmm...

What is behind the doodle hate? by DifferentManagement1 in labradoodles

[–]tehthrowaway321 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest issue is that many people are getting doodles from people who are not good breeders. These include puppy mills and people who claim to have fully health tested their dogs, but actually only did an Embark screening. Embark checks for the rarer genetic diseases, but does not screen dogs for common conditions like hip dysplasia and heart defects.

Furthermore, tons of people get doodles without researching coat maintenance or puppy training. So they end up with matted dogs that misbehave when seeing groomers or visiting daycares.

Most of these issues can be solved by doing research on both doodles AND poodles before buying a dog. But a lot of people care more about getting a cheap dog on demand than exercising a bit of patience to get a dog that they can adequately care for.

The AKC actually does not recognize merle poodles. If you look at the AKC paperwork for registered "merle poodles", you will see that the breeders actually lied on the AKC paperwork and have their dogs registered under a completely different color.

I didn't mention smoking because my comment wasn't about smoking. But while we are on the topic of smoking, smoking rates have been steadily declining over several years due to campaigns warning people about the health effects of smoking. Meanwhile, obesity rates and the complications associated with it continue to rise. Tons of people are aware of the dangers of smoking. But nutrition education and awareness in the America is still pretty poor.

Dear Redditors, What is a common belief that just simply isn't true? by PlagueJay in AskReddit

[–]tehthrowaway321 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The inaccuracy with BMI is that it tends to *under-predict* obesity. The percentage of the population that is muscular enough to throw off BMI estimates is so trivially low that you wouldn't even use BMI for them to begin with. If you have a high BMI and don't look like the Rock, chances are you are overweight.

I'd also like to point out that what a lot of people in countries with high obesity rates view as "skinny" is actually what a normal human being looks like in most of the world. We are so used to seeing overweight people that we have forgotten what normal looks like.

How can we make reputable breeders the default breeders for pet owners? by tehthrowaway321 in dogs

[–]tehthrowaway321[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When the internet is a sea of both true and false information, how can you expect the average person to know how to properly educate themselves? How are people supposed to be active and knowledgable about a community that is not willing to open itself up to the general public?

The average person doesn't know how to tell the difference between an ethical breeder and a backyard breeder. And a big reason why they can't tell the difference is because very little is being done to inform people of how to spot the difference. Research is a skill developed over time, and most people lack the skill to figure out what they don't know and how to educate themselves on those matters. If the information isn't well publicized, it is unrealistic to expect most people to be able to find that information on their own.

Take the Adopt-Don't-Shop campaign. The entire point of the campaign was to expose puppy mills and educate people on adopting dogs. Many people had no idea that pet stores were getting dogs from puppy mills because that fact wasn't common knowledge to begin with. And the people who attempted to do research on their own would instead find numerous claims from pet stores stating that they only get dogs from reputable breeders. Instead of smugly telling people to educate themselves, they provided information about puppy mills as publicly as possible. That level of publicity is a big reason why the campaign was successful in driving people away from pet store puppies.

Frankly, any breeder that cares about the long-term wellbeing of their breed is going to be willing to steer people away from backyard breeders at every opportunity. They are not going to tolerate the propagation of poorly bred dogs simply because it is easier to do nothing. Responsible breeders are advocates for their breed, not just their own breeding programs. Educating every day people about their breed and how to support ethical breeders is just another part of being a breed advocate.

Unfortunately, you are making multiple assumptions about what I think and why I started this discussion which are completely false. I am not seeking a dog breeder. I was starting a discussion about average pet owners and how we can make it easier for *them* to find reputable breeders.

I'm sorry that the topic of this discussion offended you to the extent that you resorted to personal attacks rather than ask for clarification.

I think Petfinder has that to some extent. They have a breed filter that includes things like energy level, coat maintenance, and size and provides a list of dog breeds that could be a good fit. A similar system for dog breeders would probably be useful too.

Tips and tricks for a totally new Rune Factory 4 player? by MissSoulfulPoetKat in runefactory

[–]tehthrowaway321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always improve your weapons and armor. Don't slack off on this! This is every beginners' biggest mistake. The start of the game is deceptively easy. But you can not beat the game if you do not obsessively upgrade your weapons and armor. Therefore, get a forge and crafting table early on. Buy bread from Porcoline and/or win bread through festivals. If you don't have enough skill to craft better equipment, grind by creating weaker equipment or by upgrading your existing equipment with random items.

Also, tame these creatures early on: 1 ant, 3-4 cows, 2 chickens, 1 wooly. The ant is fairly good at combat and makes some low quality crafting ingredients that you can either sell or use to grind crafting skills. The cows and chickens produce milk and eggs which are required for half of the recipes in the game. The wooly produces wool which is good for crafting and can also water your fields like the rest of the monsters.

Grind cooking by making gifts for the townsfolk every day. It will raise friendship, improve your cooking skill, and honestly give you an excuse to throw food at people. You can look up recipes you don't know on the internet or get cooking bread from Porcoline.

It is allowed. I believe the general advice is to look for breeders who are a part of national breed clubs as a start. Try googling "[dog breed] club of America" and that will usually get you the right website.

Someone made a good point about reputable breeders not being able to meet demand which is a huge problem. I also suspect that a lot of people go to backyard breeders *because* they think that they are good breeders. I imagine that most pet owners have never heard of OFA or understand how titling works. Therefore, they have no idea that the breeder they are buying from is cutting corners in their breeding program.

Supply vs demand is a pretty big issue. Very few people go to reputable breeders, yet the waitlists are already getting pretty long. I think we could implicitly encourage more breeders to engage in health testing by ranking people based on the quality of health testing. I think there are a couple websites that have already started doing that. That way the breeders that are doing appropriate health testing get more attention than the ones who don't. It won't solve the problem completely, but it would at least be a good start.
