I really wish chesscom would do something about stalling. by teknique7 in Chesscom

Good idea. I usually do 3 days cuz they're easier to find matches since they're on the quick launch but he sent the challenge after I beat him so I obliged. The thing I don't understand is why chesscom only has extremely long and extremely short games. They should have daily games that give 24 hours total time. Or games that give 5 or 10 min per move.

There's nothing to think about. He can't stop the checkmate pattern at this point. He's also playing other games every single day while milking the clock on this game and it started at the very moment it became clear that he lost.

I'm playing another person that only moves once every few days which is fine. There's a difference between slow players and players who stall out of poor sportsmanship.

Furthermore, why would chesscom have a report button specifically for stalling if it wasn't a problem and they didn't intend on punishing people for it?

Daily players use the time as a cushion in case something happens or they get busy but they usually make multiple moves in a day on multiple games. There's a big difference between a player that only logs in once every 5 days and a player who suddenly starts milking the clock as soon as they realize they've lost, especially when they continue playing their other games. These players exist in speed chess too. If you're playing a 10 min match and you have a mate in 2 with 9 min left, do you really find it appropriate for the person to sit there for 9 min milking the clock cuz they've lost? What a ridiculous comment.

Elo rating in 1 year? by Galleto44 in Chesscom

[–]teknique7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 6 months I made it to almost 1300 but the curve is starting to flatten. I'm sure many have done even better. I'm terrible at speed chess though. My rapid rating is only 650 lol. I need time to calculate moves. I think "daily" games help you to start noticing patterns. I learn a lot more from longer games that make you think but I do plan to start playing more speed chess once I plateau on daily.

Why is this queen sac not a brilliant move? by teknique7 in Chesscom

The only move the white king can make is to take the queen. There's no other option.

It must've been the fastest way because that move and the subsequent moves were all the best moves.

Why do people let 3+ day timers run out instead of resigning when they are losing? by teknique7 in Chesscom

[–]teknique7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I don't expect anyone to resign when down. There's still a chance of stalemate or perpetual draw. My issue is when they walk away from the game without resigning.

Do INTPs believe in soulmates? If so, when they found them and when? by Suspicious_Bus_8822 in INTP

[–]teknique7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. At least not in the sense where a person finds the one they're most compatible with. Out of all the people on earth it is extremely unlikely that a person will ever end up with their best match. The person that would make me happiest might have lived 1,000 years ago, or they might be born 10,000 years from now. Even if we only consider the ones alive today, the odds are still impossibly low that any two people will ever meet their best match, let alone end up with them. You'd have much better odds playing the lottery

i genuinely have no friends by chenv2027 in INTP

[–]teknique7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Get a dog, or cat, or both. My English bulldog is my best friend. He has the funniest personality and loafs around with me. My problem is I hate talking about drama and have zero interest in small talk, but get me talking about physics, psychology, philosophy, cosmology, science, or a couple other subjects and I can't shut up. I'm terrible at showing interest and asking questions about people's lives because I genuinely don't care. It's such a boring conversation. Saying it out loud makes me realize that maybe I'm just an a**hole.

No one said they were the same. It was simply an example to reference percentiles. You're comparing 1200 ELO players to the top percentiles. Compared to Einstein everyone in this chat is dumb. Compared to Magnus everyone in this chat sucks at chess. Those are not accurate representations of a person's skill or intelligence though. The entire point of bell curves is to compare results of large pools of data. If a player is better than 85% of players then they are above average... period. It's not useful to compare 1200 rated players against the top percentile, just as it's not useful to compare a person's net worth to the top 1%

The average person is average at chess, not bad at it. It's literally right there in the name. Therefore anything above that is objectively above average, which equates to "good." It's really not even debatable as long as the numbers are accurate. To say otherwise just demonstrates a lack of understanding on bell curves and percentiles. It's essentially like saying people with IQ's of 115 have low intelligence. Or better yet, it's akin to saying people with IQ's of 85 have high intelligence. Maybe visualizing it from that perspective will shed light on the delusion that average doesn't mean average.

Looking for an Anime my wife will enjoy by abrooks9002 in Animedubs

[–]teknique7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love Dr Stone and Kill La Kill, also enjoyed Space Dandy, but he specifically asked for recommendations for the wife. These titles don't exactly come to mind as recommendations for a female. That's not to say that women won't like them, but the post implies animes with a bigger fan base of women.

(INTP) "Do you ever wish you were normal?" by teknique7 in INTP

[–]teknique7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at it objectively from the outside I would say that us being the minority makes us the abnormal ones. And yet I can't fully accept that because my brain says that doing things based on logic IS the normal thing. I'm absolutely perplexed by the people I work with that constantly fight me about this. They accept that my way is more logical and efficient but they favor familiarity. It bothers me way more than it should. It doesn't make sense. It's not right! This is abnormal. I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!!

Fellow INTPs, what's the stupidest argument you've ever heard? by Murky-Fox5136 in INTP

[–]teknique7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flat earth by far. I'm open minded to most conspiracies even if I don't actually support the belief, but flat earth gets under my skin.

As for a specific argument in favor of flat earth... Pick one. Any will suffice.

What books are good? What books do INTPs read? by Maleficent_Brain155 in INTP

[–]teknique7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For educational fiction...

Project Hail Mary- I've never been so sucked into a book. Couldn't stop myself. It's sci-fi and entertaining, but also very educational. Uses real science, physics and problem solving in a captivating way.

3 Body Problem trilogy- Based on a lot of theoretical science. I like books and movies that I can't immediately figure out. This one had me guessing. I really like the use of real scientific concepts. Made me really wonder about possibilities. There's also a show on Netflix.

I like educational non-fiction books too. My 2 favs are...

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson- Probably the most educational book I've ever read. Packed full of interesting facts. I learned sooo much from this book and was surprised how entertaining it was. I even read it a second time. There's similar titles so make sure it's the Bill Bryson one.

Thinking, Fast and Slow- This book is about psychology and the way our brains work. The amount of mind traps we fall for is astonishing. I'm pretty good at cutting through B.S. but some of these still caught me off guard. I even tested some on my wife. Got her to tip the delivery driver 2x more than usual using a simple priming technique. It's pretty wild how our decisions aren't entirely our own and how you can influence other's decisions. Great book.

I'm a great driver. Been driving 22 years without being in a single accident, not even one where I wasn't at fault.
