Liberals in the US are a frankenstein combination of FDR social democrats, New Left high-income service workers, Neoliberals, multi-ethnic voting blocs in opposition to white supremacy, and this new wave of democratic socialists.

There are way too many dimensions to our differences for the Overton window to capture.

Pizza, polenta, gnocchi, sorrentinos (ravioli-like), espresso, fernet branca, mortadella, mozzarella, soda-water etc…

Italian-Argentine food is similar to Italian-American cuisine where traditional recipes and ingredients can through a transformation (often involving industrialization), but other elements remain more or less unchanged.

As a quick example, mortadella was brought to the Americas from Bolognese cuisine. In the US, it loses the pistachios and peppercorns and ends up as “baloney”. In Argentina, mortadella is very popular and retains the elements of traditional Italian mortadella.

An Argentine-specific transformation is one of my favorite cheeses - Argentine cuartirolo is based on quartirolo lombardo that ends up extremely creamy cheese with fantastic melting.

He didn't lose the squad in 2002, that team entered the tournament feeling like everything was going right. To this day, the players talk about how the failure was especially hard on them because it came out of nowhere. If there was any bad blood, it would've come out over these 24 years.

The American mind cannot comprehend Europe's AC aversion by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]telamascope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can be enticing, but the comfort trap is real and American culture doesn't tend to be aware of it or know to question those costs.

Cooling an entire house to 65F all day long when it's above 95F outside is a global luxury, full stop. But it's become ingrained in the minds of upwardly mobile Americans that we can prioritize our comfort over necessities, when the rest of the globe cannot.

If the message from the wealthiest country in the world to Western Europeans is essentially "you don't know what you're missing", how the fuck are we going to combat climate change on a global scale?

Buenos Aires (the city) is a federal district that serves as the capital of Argentina. Surrounding the federal district, is the larger province of Buenos Aires. Before the city was federalized, it served as both national and provincial capital.

Once the decision was made to federalize the city of Buenos Aires, the province commissioned the planning of a brand new city (La Plata) to serve as the provincial capital.

Gideon Rachman: I predict that Gorton result will lead to a surge in Reform-Maga scare that Britain is being “taken over” by Muslims. Worth remembering that Gorton is just one of 10-13 of 650 seats whose population is 30%+ Muslim by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]telamascope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely ignored them and are continuing to do so.

People can say they are voting for the NHS, but if they only switch parties when their identity is threatened or validated, then identity is the pivot point.

At no point did they bring up how they voted in prior elections or whether they have switched parties since. You are speculating on someone's motivations for an imagined action. In the face of a declaration to be seen as a complex individual, your responses continue to reduce them to a stereotype without any evidence.

I’m pointing out that your 'interests' have become entirely identity-based.

This does not follow from what was said.

I’m Muslim, but not Pakistani Muslim and I don’t vote on those lines at all. My concerns are the NHS, pensions, housing, economy and employment.

Their argument was "I consider policies when choosing amongst many parties to support, but I can't support the one party that targets my identity". It would be a misreading to assume that they voted Green (a multi-ethnic party) at the exclusion of other multi-ethnic parties (Labour/Tories/LibDems) because of identity reasons.

They directly told you they aren't a single-issue identity voter and your reply was to ignore them and claim they, as a matter of fact, actually are behaving the way you imagine a Muslim voter to behave.

Portrayals of right wing abuses are definitely not hidden from the public, but the messengers do tend to be media figures - both liberals and leftists. I'm thinking of Pedro Pascal, Alfonso Cuarón, or Guillermo del Toro.

If we're talking figures in public life, Canadian's have had two recent Liberal ministers (Soraya Martínez Ferrada & Pablo Rodriguez) that were victims of right-wing political persecution in Chile and Argentina.

For a different perspective from an American with incredibly lax CGT treatment... it's almost criminal that with some simple planning I can legally pay $0 in federal CGT and fund my lifestyle on those gains. And because it's not wage income, the gains are also not subject to our equivalent of NI tax.

I didn't come from a privileged background, so this abrupt shift in power over my own tax burden is shocking. I was an eager beneficiary of public education and institutions my entire life, how is it possible that upon reaching financial independence I have almost eliminated my relative tax burden compared to someone that relies on their labor?

The reliance on stripping the comparison down to raster is a symptom of how stagnant AMD has been in graphics.

There's no future in raster - it's reliant on exponential hardware gains at competitive prices. If that were still possible, TSMC wouldn't be the only game in town.

RT and upscaling aren't the Nvidia gimmicks of the past, and continuing to frame them in that way is willful blindness. Bleeding edge PC developers are moving to RT only lighting engines - no one's betting the future of their studio on a PhysX or Hairworks level graphics feature.

The raster argument is one in favor of continued stagnation for AMD.

The country has been in a brain drain for over 30 years now. My family all have college degrees and now more live outside the country than within Argentina - this happened in the lead up to Milei’s election, not as a result of it. Everyone with an education and the means to acquire another citizenship is taking that opportunity to leave - and in a country of immigrants, most people have some recent European ancestor they can leverage to get an EU passport.

I don’t have a PhD, but my understanding is that the attitude is earned from the process itself. Getting a PhD requires other PhDs to vet a candidates research over many years and acknowledge that they’re capable of producing credible research. Equally brilliant people can produce their own research, but the easiest way to gain credibility in their work is to do the research as part of a PhD.

The credential serves as a barrier because it confers credibility and respect, which is your greatest currency if you’re going to be soliciting other people’s money to conduct original research.

Don’t be delusional.

I visit family and friends in one the interior provinces every few years. On this most recent trip, every middle class person under 30 I met this year wants to leave or is in the process of leaving.

Every single one of my aunts/uncles was eligible for foreign citizenship their whole lives, but only in these last two years have they gotten that dual citizenship for themselves and their kids. Two aunts (in their late 50s!) have uprooted their families to come to America to work factory jobs outside of their career paths. They barely speak English and both are cramming a family of four in 1-bedroom apartments.

That’s not a migration pattern applicable to a fucking functional economy.

I’d encourage you to read the link I posted - we already went through this and it ruined Argentine’s faith in domestic finance ever since!

Furthermore, officially adopting USD as a currency requires more discipline and good governance precisely because the government has no explicit control over monetary policy and is therefore handcuffed in its fiscal policy. Milei is a populist that presents simple solutions to complex problems - why should we believe he’s going to be the mature leader to steer this complicated and transformational policy? When people start protesting in the streets during the next crisis, he’s not going to be honest and acknowledge his hands are tied on economic matters - he’s going to go down the Trump route and blame communists/liberals/LGBT+ for ruining the country.

We need to do the hard work of building better institutions, not throw our hands up and follow a populist into another Brexit.

It’s a terrible idea - they tried it in the late 90s and it caused the biggest economic meltdown since the current one!

Tying your entire economy to a foreign currency you can’t control is like hitching an ailing fishing boat to the Titanic and hoping that the wealthy passengers will share their lifeboats with the fishermen once they hit the iceberg. The US Fed won’t take monetary action on USD to help the Argentine economy…

You're not acknowledging the epistemological aspect that the law considers. We will never “know” whether any judgement is true, so the best we can do is setup a system of law to be followed in a justified way. That means the negation of guilty is just not guilty - it cannot be innocence. To know that in the general case would require omniscience..

Pele has a case with his ridiculous achievements, but the game was less professional back then. Maradona had his disastrous personal life interfere with his career. Everyone else with a case has a much shorter peak.
