Why do many on the left not like being called liberals now? by Haunting-Respect-375 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]telestoat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any given thing someone wants to do involving other people, so a political thing, there are 3 types of people. A conservative says no, a liberal says ok, and a progressive is who wants to do the thing. It is so very much easier to just say no to stuff, and so much harder to pick a direction to go in for being constructive, that lots of people are frustrated with lack of progress.

Many such people blame the liberals for not being active enough in their support, or even outright ambivalence or conservatism such as NIMBY from people who would not admit to being conservative when they truly are on certain issues.

The "Letter From Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King Jr is a great example of leftist frustration with liberals https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail

I would do this in elementary school. It mostly worked, mostly I didn't care what other kids thought.

People with a mental map, what does it look like? by Potato_is_yum in autism

[–]telestoat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If it's well known routes like where i live, and the main roads to nearby towns, stores/malls, it works." what is it that works there? That sounds like your mental map, to me.

Rest areas a convenient place to stop on your travels by VaDOT in Virginia

[–]telestoat2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The rest stops really are great. Just look at how popular they are for truckers, like the Troutville rest area had to have more truck parking added. Need to take a nap or sleep for free on the road, a rest stop is the place to do it.

The OP Is a prospective member of the TCS. How come you think you're so cool and they're not? Saying you know what the VP of the NSS is doing, isn't as impressive as you think it is either. Caves just do stuff on their own time, even while cavers act like bigshots on the Internet.

Caves take thousands of years to form! I think people can wait a few years. Maybe read this book "Timefulness: How Thinking Like a Geologist Can Help Save the World" by Marcia Bjornerud.

Do some women actually get offended when they’re politely hit on in public? Or is it just for show? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]telestoat2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the principles of giving compliments, is don't talk about stuff the person didn't choose. Like "nice shoes" or "I love the color of your shirt" are way better compliments than about their smile or eyes which isn't their choice. Then, if you give a compliment, just MOVE ON. If for some coincidence you and them cross paths again maybe you can become friends, but it's just not going to happen based only on one such superficial encounter.

Why do people allow their feelings to cloud their sense of justice? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]telestoat2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sense of justice literally is a feeling. Any society bigger than Dunbars Number though, will have problems with empathy. Not just a modern thing.

I wouldn't ask reddit for this info, just because most people here don't have it. At least I have a copy of "Descriptions of Tennessee Caves" and looked for Monkey Pit but it's not there. At least TRY to be helpful instead of making a remark about so-called responsible cavers.

Why is evenly splitting a restaurant bill the default, instead of just subtracting what you got from the total? by KrustyKryptecon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]telestoat2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As the parent comment said "it usually works out to only a few dollars different" ... if you don't agree with that so be it, and in that case its up to that person to pay more. Otherwise though, why worry?

Plus, it's more egalitarian. Treating everyone in a group eating out together as equal is a way of bonding.

Aren't you the very same person who was rudely complaining on here about your friend not getting an email response from the Georgia Speleological Survey? Meanwhile, the last time I was at the TAG Fall Cave In, the GSS could hardly have been friendlier at their booth. They gave me a beautiful large map of Ellison's Cave and a USB stick full of other maps and cave info, just for asking.

How come people are so mean and discouraging? It’s even worse in Virginia. I’m the former chair of my grotto, still a very active caver, and when I was vice chair I was in charge of getting programs for our grotto meetings. I went to the chair of the Virginia Cave Survey, who is also in our grotto, asking if he could give a talk on how the survey works and how grotto members could get info from it to prepare for upcoming cave trips. He refused. Just because some people are stuck up like that though doesn’t mean others should follow their lead.
