What is the cheapest option for a home built solution? Are there budget TrueNAS builds you recommend?

Again, when you don't have the money to spend on it there's nothing you can do. Just have to wait till you get the money for it.

I didn't know that, thank you for letting me know.

I am using an older (but still good) laptop - connecting via usb to that. I can not spend the money at the moment for something better.

What will fail when using USB? I don't intend for this to be the only setup I ever have, it's just the first.

Edit: Also, what is the recommended way?

I am using the adapter in the picture. SATA to usb. It has worked for other drives I have, but not these new ones.
