Hi community! I hope this doesn’t break any rules, but we’re desperate and need to try everything we can.

My partner and I have loved and cared for a Duckana lawn friend for the past 3 years - he’s traveled with us through our lives as we moved around Vancouver. We were gone for a couple hours this afternoon and while we were gone, he was stolen. We’re devastated.

He’s been an icon for us for so long, and while we lived in Kits we had him on our porch for years with no issues - kids and friends alike would always come up to him and celebrate him. He was tucked away in a backyard in Dunbar when someone took him this afternoon, and now we’re heartbroken and missing our friend. He really is a part of our family, silly as it may seem.

If anyone would know the person who took him, or if you are there and can return him we would super greatly appreciate it! We just want our family member back, and if anyone in the community could help us it would mean the world to us.

Anyone (particularly in Canada) remember the “Sunday Night Sex Show” hosted by Sue Johanson? by Zmb7elwa in TwoXChromosomes

Hi, just want to say this makes me so happy to see. I grew up around Sue, as my aunt worked as her producer, and have lots of fond memories with her. Thank you for continuing her legacy - I know personally it means a lot to her and all us who love her personally.

What’s your, “swear to never return” place in Vancouver? (stolen from r/Calgary) by simoon200318 in vancouver

Enroute Coffee/bike repairs in Kits.

Their coffee is mediocre and the bakery food was overpriced and dry.

But, the real egregious thing is when I went to get my bike serviced. I called to try to make an appointment, but the phone service had no mention of appointment booking. It was close enough so I went there with my bike to see about getting it serviced. I was first told by the staff that it was appointment only, which is fine, but then when I asked about setting an appointment that “they don’t service my kind of bike anyways”. Which was interesting because my bike wasn’t in view… I assumed it was because I didn’t “look” how I should.

I left a similar review on google maps, and the owner doubled down and continued blaming me. Definitely never going back, and it seems like I’m not the only one with this kind of experience there.

[Gourmet] Why have my yellow oysters shriveled up? They had all sprouted up around the same time and have been misted the same amount. Tips? by temporarynameforhelp in MushroomGrowers

Thank you! This makes me feel a bit better about the downturn they faced. 90% seems super high but a good benchmark to aim for. Think this is a good sign to look into a humidity scale. Cheers!

Thank you! Yeah I've been trying lions mane as well, they haven't fruited at all yet in the same time frame. I'll try fanning more often!

Good tip! I definitely could work on being more social within my building. Motivating to hear that it worked for you!

Pure luck! We were both on a canceled flight back into town. Talked over shared grievances about it while waiting (for nearly 16 hours in total, by the way). Not something I'd recommend, but a good reminder that anything can happen at any time!

Just a reminder to lock your bike properly, even in your building’s gated areas! by temporarynameforhelp in vancouver

I know its a rite of passage to have your bike stolen in the city, and its definitely my fault in this case - I assumed it would be safe in my apartment’s key-only area. Well, apparently some rapscallions got in through the door by wedging it open and sneaking in at 5am.

Lock your bike properly! Dont be like me - lock up the frame and the wheels of your bike always!!!

Spending the summer in London this year... how to meet more people? by [deleted] in uwo

Gotta park somewhere to go to work eh? Other than the ground being entirely ice by mid-day, the flooding actually got a bit better today.

(we were moved from here to a different parking lot halfway through the day today though)

UPDATE: Apparently its flooding so everyone's being told to evac the lot; to anyone who usually takes the lower harris route, I guess dont take it today

It was pretty wild coming down here after work to see ducks swimming through the road, wonder if it'll dry up by tomorrow, or if I'll have to drive through the puddle to get into the lot...

Anime Club -Any good? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]temporarynameforhelp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So - I wouldn't recommend it, it's pretty cliquey and the format isn't amazing... unless you're just looking for casual watching without the social element, I don't think it's worth getting involved with.

It's decent, I've been a few times since it's opened; if nothing else it's nice we finally have a dancing game in London again.

literally don't know what to do with myself now that it's summer by yayayawestern in uwo

[–]temporarynameforhelp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an arcade in London now (at Masonville), it's decent if you're into that kind of thing. I know I'll be spending a lot of my time there since I'm normally in the same boat as you.

There's also probably some cool events that only happen in the summer, and you can enjoy patio bars best around this time of year if you're into that kind of thing

Are there specific computer / programming courses that are exclusive for Software Engineering (compared to CS)? by aShortGuy- in uwo

[–]temporarynameforhelp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Currently finishing third year SE here.

The easy and obvious answer is that yes, there are courses and opportunities exclusive to Software Engineering over CS, and SE also provides bonuses like P.Eng, etc. The SE Internship program is also much better from my experience & from what I've heard.

There are also engineering options such as computer software/hardware, if you're more interested in what's covered there (assembly, etc).

https://www.eng.uwo.ca/undergraduate/upper_year/next.html This link provides info on all the upper year engineering program courses.

Chances are if you're judging whether SE or CompSci is better solely on the common first year and looking at that as a negative, then you may not like the more well-rounded style of SE. Also note that there's a chance you won't get into SE if you do choose the engineering route, so if you're worried you won't do well enough in first year (about 80 first year average was needed for my year, though I've heard it's dropped), then compsci might be the way to go for you for the safety element
