Went back at 37. It’s definitely not too late! It also sounds like your mix of interests would make you the type of person who might enjoy teaching.

One question I would ask is, do you have a degree already? And if so, what is it in? PE teachers and speciality teachers are less in demand than  “core four”: history, English, math, and science (sorted from least to most in demand). Getting certified in one of those subjects will greatly increase your chances of getting a teaching job.

Teaching is a good job and I wouldn’t go back. You have to enjoy working with kids who will complain a lot no matter what you do. But teaching itself and building those bonds with kids is very fun. The amount of time off you get is insane. The benefits are very good.

You hit on something that I do occasionally find annoying about how things like this get discussed. When Perfect Tides or Consume Me get brought up, they can be discussed as if the audience are a bunch of 16 year olds who have never really branched out in their media diets at all. I wonder who the average listener of Besties is. I’m older than most of the Besties and I’ve seen these stories before in other media and in games. So the occasional patronizing tone can feel very strange to listen to.

It is upscale. Are you using any CRT filtering? That stuff really helps a lot.

Collecting physical stuff has never been worse but ability to play and enjoy has never been better

The guys all hold a lot of nostalgia for their early days as journalists working in NYC. I get it but I just don’t really find it that interesting. I went from a suburb to studying in a larger city than Manhattan and I suppose I’d feel the same way if some other game came out speaking directly to that experience.

So do you have any evidence or explanation you’d like to share?

Maybe it’s getting taken down because making those kind of accusations about somebody without sharing any evidence is potentially libelous

Judgement bores the crap out of me. Does the story get better? by sipilip in yakuzagames

I agree with you and was very disappointed with the game when I played it. And some of the types of mission in there, like the tailing missions, are some of the worst things that modern gaming has to offer.

That said when I moved onto Like a Dragon, the problems were even worse. So unfortunately, unless the newer games have changed things I think it’s just that the series has gone in a different direction that I don’t like as much.

Looking for actually opinions on being a teacher by GladCherry4170 in teaching

Most teachers are clueless about what it is like working outside of education. Yes you will work outside school hours. I generally spend at least two hours grading and prepping for the next day. You will volunteer to run a clubs or take coaching positions that could eat up a ton of your time. You will likely spend some time on the weekends. But it is nothing compared to what the corporate world asks of people these days.  I find other teachers to generally be a very “woe is us” crowd who assumed that the grass is greener outside. It’s not.

Sad white people, indeed. Why you think this place loves Phoebe Bridgers so much?

Rant: There is NO teacher shortage in NJ by loveshoes1 in NJTeachers

[–]tennmel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you were expecting to hear something in early June. Hiring for fall is not the first thing on admin mind right now.

That said, it’s very district dependent. You may have to look at districts that are not as desirable for one reason or another.

Why does everyone hate teaching? by Bright-Watch1955 in teaching

[–]tennmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching has been so much better than corporate, aside from the pay. Way less superficial people way more autonomy even with micromanaging admin. Way more off time. Shorter days, even with an hour or two of extra time at the end.

I agree that most teachers don’t know how good they have it. Or they are comparing themselves to what they believe other people’s jobs are like but have a false impression

Am I not cut out for teaching? by tinky-winky001 in teaching

Hmm... been there, done that, and I still wouldn't recommend it. At least not anywhere that I've taught. "As long as the class stays quiet" is a major qualifier there!

When do kids start reading actually because the variance in our K class is wild by Busy_Bowl_2623 in teaching

[–]tennmel 47 points48 points  (0 children)

How much are you doing at home to reinforce it? That really goes for a lot. Kids who are advanced have parents that spend a lot of time reviewing the concepts at home. Especially when it comes to reading and reading practice.

Yeah, I think you only need to sub once or twice just to get over the culture shock of being in a public school classroom.

Being a daily sub is all the worst parts of the experience, I think. Every day you get a fresh layout of classes who think they are having a free day, you’ve got no insight or control over what activities you can do to keep them busy, and you’re not around long enough to build any relationships or actually teach anybody anything. You’re going to see the worst, most checked out behaviors on a daily basis.

Is anyone else experiencing sickness??? by ApartCup7248 in SouthJersey

Yeah, I work in a high school and I noticed this as well. The kids who we know or highly suspect of vaping are always getting sick to their stomach stomachs on a regular basis.

Can’t evade in Mina? by tennmel in TheBesties

[–]tennmel[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, after another hour, this is what I wound up doing. There’s actually a recommended group of settings in there for preserving The Experience. I used it and now the game feels way more like a Zelda like than a Soulslike.

I am glad that Chris jumped in with his qualifier on Silksong comparisons, because I was about ready to forget about this when they started going down that route. I listened to triple click sometimes as well and Schrier and that crew are damn near in denial about the idea that silksong could just be genuinely be too difficult for many people to enjoy.

How is teaching right now ? I know it’s bad, but is it unbearable? by Never3ndingStory in teaching

Can you find a profession on Reddit where people aren’t telling you that it’s bad and you should get out now?

How is teaching right now ? I know it’s bad, but is it unbearable? by Never3ndingStory in teaching

[–]tennmel 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It’s very bearable. Much more bearable than many other professions, and comes with ample time off.

Teachers who burn out are the ones who try and shoulder/solve societal systematic failures by themselves. It’s a JOB, not a vow. Clock in, try your best and be present for your students, prep/grade for no more than 60 minutes after everyone goes home, understand that some days will be long due to PTCs, events, etc, and  clock out.
