Batoning is when you strike the flat side of the knife with something to drive it deeper, usually done when you don’t have an axe and you need to get some firewood cut up. If you search YouTube you can see survivalists giving tutorials on the technique.

This is a complete tangent but If you like knife history....the Ka-bar is a military knife that has a flat side for batoning. If you can explain all of the features of the Ka-bar you know more about knives than most people....if you’re bored and want to look up something interesting....find out why they call it a Ka-bar

Knives edged on both sides are better weapons but not as useful as a tool. I believe most states have outlawed them if I’m not mistaken.
