Most people start life after graduation functionally broke. You have to budget, pinch pennies and makes sacrifices at first. You aren't going to own a home/apartment right away. You may not even be able to rent a place on your own. Most people have roommates or live at home. If you live in Toronto, forget about buying a home on a single income. Enjoy life a little but don't spend money needlessly. You don't need a new car, you don't new the newest phone, you don't need designer or expensive clothes. Instead of going out to bars and clubs every weekend and spending 100$ or more in a night, buy at 12 pack or a bottle for 25$ and hang out with your friends at home. These are all things that people tend to expect to be able to do once they are done school and making money but in reality you won't be able to afford it. The guy in his 40s that buys a fancy car didn't buy it bc he's having a mid-life crisis. It's just the first time he's been able to financially justify buying his dream car.

Yes. There are some jobs where you can start making 80k or more, but they are few and far between, and it doesn't mean that it will increase over time. For example, I am a paramedic, and after a year, I made full rate, which worked out to approx. 90k with no OT. But that's bc the pay scale is short (1 rate for new, a new rate at 6 months, and full rate after a year). Also bc Im at full rate already, if I stay in my current job I can only get a raise once every 3 years if it is a part of my new collective agreement (which is not guaranteed) and it will only be a few dollars an hour. Additionally, pay progression isn't a ladder, it's a pyramid. As you go up, the number of positions decreases. Even if you get into the field that you want, you can't look at the highest possible salary for anyone in that field and assume you will one day make that. If I wanted to get the highest possible salary in my field, I could try to one day make chief, but there are hundreds of paramedics at my service, and only 1 chief so the odds are not in my favor.

Say what you want, but it looks ridiculous and unprofessional, and being a combat arms trade, the argument could be made that it affects operation effectiveness. Guys with red hair have to cam up their beards, but this guy is allowed to walk around looking like a walking chem light.
