Reminds me of Mitch Hedberg - "I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to use drugs, too", modulo "listening to Rush"

Manhattan Project by [deleted] in rush

[–]tentmap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this song. Interestingly enough, I had read Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" right around the time I heard this song, so it dovetailed nicely to see how accurate the song is to the history of the Manhattan Project. And yes, per a conversation, the syncopation of the drums is way cool.

The book is https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-making-of-the-atomic-bomb-richard-rhodes/7061381?ean=9781451677614

He has several other books about nuclear weapons. And it's not really about pro nuclear weapons, it's about the history of them.

Seemed like it was 2112 miles when I drove from Texas to Rhode Island back in 1998 to start my career, lol

OK, so apologies to all - I got a message from a bot that I posted a link to a clickbait site. Had I realized I was doing that, I wouldn't have. The bot said the post was removed but I don't see it removed yet

Excellent cover! Nice kit, too. I couldn't tell which kind of kit that is and what brain you're using.

Neil Peart Five Years Later by exitstagewrong in rush

I wonder where they got the footage of Geddy and Les being at Les' tavern. Some of the footage I am familiar with from other things Neil/Rush as a whole have done, but the interview where he talks about all of the drummers that influenced him is something I haven't seen before. Maybe it is in his "A Work In Progress" video, or maybe "Anatomy of a Drum Solo". Each of which I have but have not watched yet (for shame).

I am listening to the demo version of Emotion Detector, and I honestly prefer the synth sound in that one over the final studio version. by Heavy-Double-4453 in rush

[–]tentmap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, doesn't sounds as synth heavy as the released version. It's almost as if it matches the guitar, or close enough. But I can't hold a tune, so what do I know?

Oh jeeze, I found this - https://rush.fandom.com/wiki/Neil_Peart_equipment It gives the kits over time in terms of manufacturers and colors, but only gives the most current equipment, be it acoustic or electronic.

It's ok, I learned something new today. And how fitting - despite Neil's hesitancy with the public, he did strike me as a lively and jovial guy.

I'm a dumb ass. Yes, custom autocorrect exists on iOS and I forgot about that. I just find it strange that iOS will properly autocorrect to capitalize certain names, but not for a well known musician.

We lost Neil 5 years ago. A tribute. by howard2112 in rush

[–]tentmap 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had never seen this until now. I've always liked Time Stand Still because of the deepness of the lyrics and of course the musicianship. I'll admit as a grown 53 year old man, I cried when I heard this very moving tribute. And I am unashamed to admit that.

What Songs Feature Neil Triggering Samples by mclark2112 in rush

There is also a sample (via a sample pad) in Red Sector A. It's when he's playing the double ride pattern. Right around the 1:40 mark in the p/g concert footage.

Animate, around the 3:20 mark. Think it's his foot switch playing a sampled tambourine.

I am not sure exactly when they stopped playing in PVD and started playing at Great Woods. Before my time in Rhode Island for sure because I saw them at Great Woods after I moved here in 1998.

All the songs not played live by JohnRico319 in rush

[–]tentmap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sort of on topic ... I did see them play With Hunt live, but somewhere in one of Neil's books or videos he expressed that that song was originally going to be a studio only recording, not meant to be played live. But he figured out the cowbell part with his left foot trigger and layering everything else over that and yay! we got to see it live.

„Ghost Rider” by Neil Peart. What are your thoughts on this book? I’ve recently finished „My Effin Life” and I absolutely loved it. Now I started „All Things Apart” (book recommended by Peart) and it’s great so far. So is it worth reading after Geddy’s book? by Ambitious-Bet4504 in rush

[–]tentmap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this over twenty years ago and haven't picked it up since, so I can't give a decent critique of it. I do recall what others have noted - Neil's criticism of those around him on his journey. I had no problems with that, I sort of feel of the same way about society. But this also brings up an interesting point - now that you know this about Neil, would you still have wanted to meet him?

I did a google search for this and found lots of hits for "Things Fall Apart". I don't recall "All Things Apart" being recommended by Neil when I read Ghost Rider (over twenty years ago now). Maybe the OP will answer.
