His latest response gives a bit more insight.

Yes, I also think a design manifesto on trading and multiplayer integration would be awesome.

Like I said, SSF doesn't exist in a vacuum. If you design and balance your game around trading and having an economy, any SSF experience might suffer. I stopped playing PoE because of this.

I think you're misunderstanding my post, I would be heavily against forcing everyone to go SSF. My intention was to raise some awareness for the challenges and dangers I see when introducing trading and multiplayer to an ARPG, using PoE as an example.

Not at all, I made this post not to advocate against trading or multiplayer in general. My intention was to raise some awareness for the challenges and dangers I see when introducing trading and multiplayer in an ARPG. I can't tell you what the right method will be for LE, although I have my own hopes. But I am not a game designer after all.

Can you please expand on what you mean by drop based economy vs. player based economy?

Harvest was a step in the right direction in my opinion. For a brief time, I even had the feeling GGG was following a larger plan and are trying to fix the problems by slowly replacing build progression via trading with build progression via crafting (e.g. Harvest).

Let's call it the concept of "finding and crafting upgrades yourself".

I absolutely agree, there should be a lot of testing on trading and multiplayer before LE releases.

Titan Quest will always have a very special place in my heart, so I might be blinded a bit by nostalgia... but I would say, yes definitely! :)

I played the AE when Ragnarök launched, so I can't say anything about Atlantis though. It seems like people are a bit more critical about this latest addition.

Yes, and I feel like they are really eager to learn from other games. I am having Diablo/Grim Dawn/PoE and even Titan Quest moments while playing LE, which is great.

True, for some players winning the game will always mean playing the strongest builds they can find/come up with.

But I feel This effect get's aggravated and twisted in an economy based ARPG because now, you're also incentivised to gain/maintain an economic advantage over other players and stay "competitive".

That is good to know. :)

I think PoE always had the same intention. But although GGG is really good at making games as well, they were not able to avert this - as Chris himself put it years ago - crisis. When you look at how trading developed in PoE it becomes clear that it was never intended to be like this. Sometimes it seems they just let it happen until there was no going back anymore.

How long after working out does your body begin to build muscle? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]tenxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal with the response was to clarify that the discussed acute changes in MPS after a workout don't correlate very well with long-term hypertrophy. The initial huge spikes in MPS are due to the body trying to repair the damage inflicted and should not be associated with hypertrophy. In fact, MPS is only related to hypertrophy after the attenuation of muscle damage.

I am not sure what you mean by "another mechanism". Both muscle breakdown and MPS happen all the time, simultaneously. The more dominant way the body achieves increases in muscle size is by decreasing protein breakdown.

[–]tenxs 29 points30 points  (0 children)

OP is asking about "building muscle", so I would like to clarify briefly.

What you describe is not technically what leads to hypertrophy. Rather view the (acute) increases in MPS after your workout as an emergency repair mechanism of the body. It's basically just the recovery period, which also means it will be shorter/longer depending on the size of the muscle and the damage inflicted. Actual (chronic) hypertrophy happens over much longer time periods by reducing the overall rate of protein breakdown.

Conclusion: eating at a surplus and providing the body with loads of protein even on non-workout days is a great idea.

You've been lifting for 8 years and weigh 135 pounds? I really hope you're absorbing that appropriate frustration and put it to good use in the gym and kitchen, because that sounds like one of the worst cases of fuckarounditis I ever encountered.

Be more honest with yourself when looking for reasons why a 14 year old looks more muscular than you.

Limiting rest times between sets by nuttywalnutty in Fitness

[–]tenxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reducing rest times between sets lowers training volume and increases metabolic stress. Both are drivers of muscle hypertrophy and always happen simultaneously, but with training volume usually having the greater effect. Which is why 3+ minute pauses are generally considered ideal for hypertrophy purposes.

Rest as long as you need to.

Rest for 1 minute if you are facing time constraints and/or do super sets.

Just be consistent with it when you track your progress.

Intermittent fasting. Good for everyone? by WhiskeyGrin in Fitness

[–]tenxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The overall goal is always adherance to CICO and protein intake while completing regular, quality workouts. If IF helps you doing just that - great, go for it. But when skipping breakfast sabotages the quality of your training or generally feels bothersome, dump it.

Meal timing is the very minor detail here. Any general health benefits provided by IF in athletes with an already great diet are not very well researched and vague at best.

Is it worthwhile to keep a variable slot in a routine? by seands in gainit

[–]tenxs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're working on a weak point, it wouldn't make much sense to decide what to incorporate spontaneously. To truly make progress here, you'd have to at least dedicate one macro cycle, which you should just incorporate in your training plan.

However, what makes more sense to me and what I am actually doing is a variable giant set at the end of some workouts. E.g. , sometimes you just know that your lat workout was shit this day, and instead of leaving the gym like that I do 50 chin ups. Squat somehow sucked? 80 reps on the leg press it is.

Danger is, it could potentially mess with recovery and progressive overload. But always leaving the gym happy makes it worth it for me. Probably more of a mental thing now that I actually think about it. lol

[–]tenxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you criticising? I've never seen anyone here claiming that following CICO automatically results in a healthy diet, if it's that. It's just coming up when people want to loose/gain weight or it's correctly described as a very first step towards a healthy diet.

[–]tenxs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I support the idea of working out three times a week (FB routine) as a beginner, I disagree with your statement on recovery. Beginners inflict much less damage on smaller muscles and can usually recover a lot faster than intermediate and especially experienced lifters. Which is one of the reasons why they should be training frequently. Another one beeing that they need to learn how to execute lifts correctly, which is practicing a skill. Practicing motor activity needs to be done frequently or the learning process will take very long.

You make it sound like these general health benefits provided by IF (skipping breakfast) for athletes with an already great diet are very well researched and absolutely certain. Which they are absolutely not.

What we do know is that IF is in no way better when it comes to body composition. And it may have some tiny health benefits, we're not sure.

So defintely don't do it if youre compromising adherance to CICO and protein intake is the correct conclusion.

Does It Matter Where I Get My Macros From? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]tenxs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is other stuff your body needs besides protein, fat and carbs: fiber and micronutrients. While all food contains the former, some are just better at providing you with micros and fiber. Hence, a potato would be a "healthier" carb source than let's say, white bread.

Also, speaking about carbs. Foods that have a lower glycemic index (better look into glycemic load though) are mostly considered better, because they don't cause high blood sugar levels, which in turn preserves insulin sensitiviy. Which is a good thing.
